SEPTEMBER 2018
Fall is here. While I sure wish summer could have lasted a few more months, I hope everyone had a splendid time. If you have just moved to Munster, this newsletter will inform you about all our community activities. Munster is a great place to live. I was very impressed to see so many of you join us at the Canada Day Extravaganza despite the record heat. I loved the reptiles, the inflatables, the face painting and crafts, the yummy cupcakes, food truck, and of course the beautiful fireworks. A huge thank you to all the volunteers who made the event possible and an even bigger thank you to everyone that stopped by and made the event a big success. The day was so much fun - thank goodness for the shade tents, dunk tank and sprinklers. The Munster Community Nursery School held its’ 10
th anniversary ball tournament
which was also very well attended. The event has been such a summer time staple here in Munster. Please check out Heather Lahey’s speech and the group photo on page three. Now that everyone has settled back into their regular schedules, there is still a lot to look forward to during the fall season. The biggest attraction is of course our Harvest Fest happening on September 29
th. You’ll
find all the information here in the newsletter. I hope to see you there. Is it too early to talk about Halloween? Not according to my kids, who have already starting making their costumes! As in past years, the MCA will be organizing a Halloween decorating contest so start planning your house and yard decorations. We will post more information online and in our email newsflash .

The fall also marks our annual membership drive. If you haven’t already gotten a community volunteer knock at your door, the doorbell should be ringing soon. As a community, we host all kinds of events and support activities for residents of all ages. All this is made possible by the $10 per household donation you give us. A lot of hard work goes into our membership drive and your help is greatly appreciated. If you are volunteering or organizing something in the community, I would love to hear from you. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to join the Munster Community Association Facebook page and check out our community website at www.munsteronline.ca for upcoming events. Have a safe and fun Halloween.

One sure thing about fall in Munster is that the leaves change and the MCA membership drive begins!
Through September and October, you can expect to have a local Munster Resident knock on your door to confirm your membership and collect the $10 fee. Your membership fee goes a long way! You not only get a handy telephone directory specifically designed for the MCA members and distributed ONLY to MCA members, you also get to put funds towards all the amazing MCA sponsored events such as Harvest Fest, Canada Day Extravaganza (remember those fireworks), Easter Egg Hunt, Christmas tree lighting, Winter Carnival, etc. The MCA also supports the Munster Monster Soccer Club; Munster Playgroup; Coffee Time at the Community Centre and assists in the coordination of many community initiatives such as the outdoor winter rink.
The $10 fee assists in offsetting the administrative costs associated with printing and web site management in order that the MCA volunteer executive is able to inform Munster residents of the many activities they can enjoy.
FAQs:
“Do I have to be in the telephone directory?” The answer is NO. You are welcome to become an MCA member, while your information remains private.
“Can I get email updates?” You sure can! The canvasser can record your email address and the MCA updates will be sent directly to your email address.
“Can I let people know my daughter/son is a babysitter?” Yes. There is a section in the phone book that advertises our local Munster babysitters.
“Can I send an e-transfer?” No, not at this time. Cash only please.
“When can I expect to receive the new phone book?” The updated MCA telephone directory will be delivered once canvassing, updating and printing is complete – usually by mid-November.
If you are interested in canvassing it's a great way to get to know your neighbours and share information about the MCA. Please contact Genn Browne, Membership Director (and NE Quadrant Captain) at 613-444-0102. Thank you to our Quadrant Captains: Jacqueline G. (SE), Heather E. (SW), Laura D. (NW), Tammy S. (rural) and Paula M. (Biltmore), as well as all of the canvassers!
PLEASE NO DITCH DUMPING! Please, be a good neighbour, dispose of your waste properly. Yard waste is picked up weekly at your curb.
Please DO NOT throw yard waste over your back fence if you back onto Munster Road. It distracts from the beauty of our village to visitors and residents, interferes with mowing of the grass,
and if the City has to clean it up, you might be liable for the cost.

Munster Co-operative Nursery School (MCNS) 10
th Annual Slo-Pitch Tournament
June 1-3, 2018
Excerpts from the speech delivered by Heather Lahey on June 3, 2018
MCNS has been in the community since 1976. It has helped to shape the lives of many young Munster children and many fond memories have been shared by both parents and preschoolers.
During the month of June, I heard so many neat stories about the nursery school. Like, how in its’ first year, MCNS was held in Judi Pilon’s family room. While picking up the cake for our event, the baker at King’s Independent shared with me how sad he was that he couldn’t attend the alumni picture - his daughters had Jane Kittle as a teacher 21 years ago! Although many things have changed in 42 years, one thing remains the same, our love and dedication to our children.
Today is a nostalgic day as we reflect on an end of a special era in Munster. But it is also a day where we give thanks. We give thanks to a giving community, who has worked very hard over the past four decades.
I’d like to thank the current and all the previous Board of Directors, all the volunteers, parents, teachers and of course all the kiddies. There are two other volunteers that have made this annual event possible: Janet Fisher and Bob Easy.
Ten years ago, Janet Fisher and the board of directors in 2008, agreed to start the MCNS Ball tournament fundraiser, and my goodness, it was a HUGE success. It has been a life-line for MCNS, especially the last 5 years. In celebration of the 10 year anniversary of the Ball Tournament, I would like to present these jerseys to Janet and to Bob, both who have played a vital role in keeping this fun tradition alive for the residents of Munster.
As we all know from experience, change is never easy, and we live in an ever-changing world. This might be the end of MCNS, but with time, something else might come along in Munster that serves our current needs better.

Canada Day Extravaganza By Laura Rupert
Another Canada day has passed and while the weather was a wee bit hot (total understatement), Munster residents did not let that stop them from joining in on the festivities. As always, our councillor Scott Moffatt joined in on the fun and didn’t mind getting dunked in the dunk tank a few times. Goldie Ghamari, MPP Carleton also joined in the fun and got acquainted with some very
beautiful snakes from Reptiles Rock. All in all, we had fun, we got wet, we ate delicious food from Royi Food Truck, we spent time with animals, and we finished the day off with some amazing fireworks! Thanks to everyone who volunteered and helped make the day as awesome as
possible and especially to all the residents of Munster and surrounding communities for coming out to celebrate our great country!
This incredible celebration would not have been possible without the generous support from:
City of Ottawa • Thomas Cavanagh Construction
Saunders Farm • 1st Munster Scouts
Jockvalley Farms • Four B Farms
Staples • Brokerlink

Munster Judo Club
Judo …26 years and still going strong! Come on out and see what you’ve been missing at the Munster Elementary School.
We practice Monday and Thursday nights from 8:15 to 10:00 pm and Saturday mornings from 10:00 am to 12:00 running from September 20
th to May 25
th. Weekday classes are for children
(6-14) and adults (15+) classes take place on Saturdays but are open to participants ages 6 to 75+. Having such a large space allows us to accommodate both serious athletes with competitive aspirations, and recreational athletes who just want to have family fun, get in shape and work towards their Black Belt.
The program is taught by six black belt instructors, led by Head Instructor Karen Heney. Karen is a former 10-time Canadian Champion and represented Canada at five World Championships, as well as the Pan American Games, Commonwealth Championships and dozens of international elite events across Europe, South America and Asia. She is an honorary member of Sport Canada’s High Performance Club and currently acts as a mentor for apprentice women coaches covering a variety of sports with the Coaching Association of Ontario.
As residents of Munster, we have always offered this program on a voluntary basis. Registration is only $118.75 for children (6-14) and $130.75 for adults (15+) for the year through the City of Ottawa Recreation (which covers janitorial
expenses at the school). Private clubs in the City can cost over $1,000 a year.
There are additional costs for the uniform (Judogi), and registration with Judo Ontario.
Guests interested in watching a class are welcome anytime.
As classes have already begun, please contact Mike or Karen Heney at 613 838-4453 to register.
Coffee Time Join us on Thursday mornings from 9 to11 at the Munster Community Centre for an adult get together. Have a cup of coffee, a snack and reconnect with your neighbours. Discuss the challenges and benefits of leaving in rural Ottawa, and whatever happens to be on your mind.
No set agenda, everything and anything goes.
Bring ideas, or bring yourself. We can’t wait to see you, hear what you’ve been up to, and chat about community happenings. For more information, contact Bonnie Fuller at 613 838-5253 or Guy Jolly at 613 838-4835.
The MCA provides support to this program by covering the costs of supplies.

Be Safe! Cycling is a fun, healthy and inexpensive way to get around, whether you cycle to and from work or school, or recreationally on the weekends. You'll enjoy it most when your bicycle handling and traffic skills are in good shape. Cyclists of all ages, like any other vehicle driver, have the same rights and duties as motorists. To increase the safety of cyclists, remember to Share the Road!
As Munster is a very busy hamlet, and especially during the Haunting Season with the increase traffic to Saunders Farm, please pay attention. LEAVE THE PHONE ALONE campaign is not just for motorists.
Safety on the road is about being courteous to all road users. Motorists should remember that they are sharing the road, not just with other cars, trucks and buses, but with bicycles and pedestrians as well. All vehicles (including bicycles) must follow the rules of the road at all times.
RULES OF THE ROAD - CYCLISTS AND DRIVERS Bicycles are vehicles and cyclists have the same rights and duties as motorists!
Ontario Highway Traffic Act and the Ottawa Traffic and Parking Bylaw require the following:
1. Stop at all stop signs and red lights.
2. Signal all lane changes, turns and stops.
3. Drive/ride on the right side of the road.
4. Drive/ride only in the designated direction on one-way streets.
5. It is unsafe and illegal to ride on the sidewalk.
6. Share the road with other users.
7. Use lights when driving/riding at night.
8. Have a bell or horn on your bike.
9. Cyclists wear a helmet (required if under 18 years old), drivers wear a seatbelt.
10. Cyclists use proper hand signaling when turning and stopping.
Riding Tips for Cyclists:
1. Ride predictably and defensively.
2. Ride in a straight line at least one meter from the curb or parked cars.
3. You may occupy any part of a lane when your safety warrants it. Never compromise your safety just for the convenience of others.
4. Be alert of your surroundings - shoulder check when you turn or change lanes.
5. Give pedestrians the right-of-way.
6. Dress to be visible.
7. Keep your bicycle well maintained.
8. Make eye contact when possible and use hand signals to communicate with drivers.
9. LEAVE THE PHONE ALONE!
Avoid injury or even death - always be aware of your surroundings and share the road.

COMMUNITY SAFETY The Ottawa Police Service would like to remind residents to remove all valuables from your vehicles and lock your vehicle at all times. They have "All Valuables Removed" warning cards which are designed to remind vehicle owners they have an active part to play in preventing these crimes. The cards are displayed by vehicle owners on the inside of the driver's side window to display the message, "All Valuables Removed" - letting would-be-thieves know not to bother searching the vehicle and alerting others to take the same precautions. To obtain a warning card, contact the Manotick Community Police Centre at 613-236-1222 Ext. 2314. With the haunting season upon us and traffic to the hamlet increases, there is a greater potential for vandalism and thefts of property. Please secure your property in a locked shed or garage to prevent thefts or damage. Please respect neighboring property lines and complaints regarding a tree or hedge too close to the property line or infringing upon another property, it is a Civil Matter and cannot be dealt with or solved by the City.
For Police to attend your location - Call 613-236-1222 - Follow the prompts

Fall Cleaning the Capital and Give Away Weekend! By Jude Sammon
The Fall Cleaning the Capital campaign runs from September 15 to October 15.
September 28 to 30 is the Capital Cleanup Weekend.
September 30th
will mark clean up day for Munster. Meet me at the Community Centre at 10:30 am. It will be a great day to come
out and help clean up the hamlet after Harvest Fest. Gloves, garbage bags, leaf and yard waste bags will be provided.
Attention Munster Students – this is a great way to earn volunteer hours. Bring your form and identify yourself when you
come to pick up your supplies at the Community Centre. Your form will be ready for you when you return.
Our Member at Large, Frank Stokes, has once again volunteered to do the main (North) entrance boulevard, from the village centre to the Welcome sign, both sides. Thanks Frank.
The fall Give Away Weekend will take place on Saturday, October 20th
and Sunday, October 21st
Do you have some gently used items that you no longer need? Someone else may want them. Don't put your unwanted stuff in the garbage. Set them out at the curb on Give Away Weekend. Tour your neighbourhood, community and city to find hidden treasures.
Examples of acceptable items include:
Books, CDs and DVDs
Old furniture and small appliances
Construction materials including drywall and hardware such as nails, bolts and screws
Kitchen gadgets, dishes, cutlery, pots and pans, unwanted gifts
Please consider safety when deciding which items to set out to the curb. The Consumer Product Safety Bureau of Health Canada advises that used children's items such as baby walkers, yo-yo balls, cribs, car seats, strollers, playpens, bath seats, mattresses, blinds, toys and other child-related items should not be placed at the curb for Give Away Weekend.
Give Away Weekend etiquette:
Respect other people's property, don't walk on people's lawns and gardens
Take only the treasures marked free at the curb
Reminders:
Leftover items can be donated to charitable organizations.
Visit usedottawa.com to buy, sell, and give away used items.
Check out Full Circles Ottawa who encourage the re-use of items that are already out in society and are no longer needed in their original homes.
Other websites to help get rid of unwanted items include Ottawa Freecycle, Craigslist and Kijiji.
Use the Waste Explorer to determine how to get rid of items that are not allowed to be placed curbside for garbage collection.

CHRIST CHURCH ANGLICAN - ASHTON
SERVICES AND EVENTS
This summer, led again by the able Karen Wiggins, many volunteers from Christ Church Ashton and Ashton United held a very successful Vacation Bible School (VBS), July 9-13. Thirty-six children enjoyed a week of fun, play and learning about God in and around Christ Church Ashton, magically decorated and transformed for the week into a “Maker Fun Factory”, the theme of this year’s VBS. During this summer and into the fall, one Saturday a month, our minister, Rev. Kerri Brennan, has been leading ”Church Outside the Walls - Forest Church”, a walk in the woods or along a trail. It’s an opportunity to commune with God's creation while engaging in conversation or in silent reflection. Everyone is welcome to join. Upcoming dates are:
Saturday, September 29 - Jack Pine
Saturday, October 27 - Lime Kiln Christ Church Ashton celebrates Holy Eucharist every Sunday at 9:30 am (with music). A time of hospitality and refreshments follows the service. Every Thursday at 9:30 am, we have Morning Prayer at the church, followed by a short Bible study. Atmosphere is informal; people take turns leading and we all learn together. God Has Got You Covered, our gently used clothes and jewelry shoppe, is open every second Saturday in the old Ashton rectory from 10 am to 4 pm. Need to take home some extra baked goods? We have home baking for sale at the shoppe! Check our website for upcoming dates (http://www.ccashton.org), or look for the sign outside the Ashton rectory when the shoppe is open. To keep abreast of ongoing and upcoming events at CCA, check our website at http://www.ccashton.org and follow us on Facebook at Christ Church Ashton (Ontario). We look forward to seeing you at any or all of our services and
events this fall.

DANBYS is celebrating Alexander Keith’s
Birthday with a fantastic night of food, music and fun.
Shag Harbour will liven up the restaurant with east coast music. Led by Munsters’ very own George Evely, this band will have you singing, dancing and foot tapping all night.
Our chef, Dan Serson will prepare a special lobster dinner which is guaranteed to satisfy your appetite. And of course you will be celebrating one of Canada’s most famous beer makers with prizes from

SATURDAY AFTERNOON OPEN
MIKE “The Baconator” Belejac
DANBYS has become the talk of the
Ottawa Valley with the Saturday afternoon jams. Scores of musicians show up each Saturday to play together; hang out and have fun. The best part is that you don’t have to play; you can watch this amazing show of talent spanning almost every musical genre you can think of. Last year over 130 musicians participated in Eastern Ontario’s largest Jam. So come out, meant your neighbours and listen to some of the best music Ottawa has to offer. If you want to play, bring your instrument too. Host Mike will make sure you set up and are backed up with some great musicians.
