I feel the combination of my ancillary texts and my main product are effective, they all work alongside each other to attempt to sell out film successfully. This is clear as if you put all three different promotional aspects together each would link with the other and therefore the audience when seeing each ancillary text can visually relate it to the same movie.

The most effective aspect..

One of the most effective aspects that makes it clear that the combination work alongside each other and clearly link is the fact that each ancillary text was dominated by one character ( Fabienne). We see that in the magazine cover the main image is the female character, which makes the viewers’ attention focused on the female character. The same with the movie poster which is also dominated by Fabienne and the trailer. Therefore all three giving the same message to the audience and telling them that the narrative is led by the particular character ( Fabienne) this is also used to indicate the target audience being female.

The tagline is written clearly at the bottom of the movie teaser poster and at the top for the poster ; “Everybody wants it. Everybody seeks it. … But very few achieve it”. This established a clear link with the trailer, as the tag line was also written throughout the trailer. This reinforces the importance of the statement and shows it significance as it feels uncompleted making the audience drawn to the movie so that they complete it. The fact that the word “it” is used is itself effective in drawing the audience to the movie, as it does not specify the object, feeling or even person the tagline is talking about, making the audience extremely interested in discovering what the text is talking about.

The Tagline…

The movie title is easily identified in the movie poster and trailer as its bold, capital and large. This therefore means that it meets its aims, as the movie title is one of the most important ways to identify the movie and through word of mouth allow the audience to promote it. In both the trailer and poster it shares the same font, and size showing clear consistency within the combination. Therefore making it look professional and fitting with the common conventions of film trailers.

The movie title

Both the movie posters and trailer are dark throughout therefore showing that they both share the same atmosphere/ theme by being negative. Therefore the combination works together to create the same feelings for the audience rather than contradict one another. Even though the magazine poster may not be seen as dark it is still very limited in colour, as it is only black and white. Which conveys calmness and also negativity and hidden emotion. This is also reinforced by the image of the character ( Fabienne) being seen as pale on the face. The use of dark colours and negative emotions both also make the genre of the movie clear and therefore guide the viewer to what type of movie it is.

We decided for our posters that we would take images from our trailer. We found this very effective, as it made it look much more real and immediately link with the trailer. Rather than having artificial emotions that would take place within a photo shoot, we used real footage that was displayed from are trailer. Both from significant scenes in the trailer that show clear dis-equilibrium. One image was from a scene where the female character was at breaking point mentally and was completely alone and the other shows a joint connection between the female character (Fabienne) and male character (Nial) linking in with the word “Love”. Both images put together shows juxtaposition as one scene is very negative and the other is romantic. This draws the audience to see such a narrative that would involve such different moods and also linking it with the movie title that involves “Love” and “Not”.

The power of Text

On the movie poster it is written that the movie is Oscar nominated, this would attract the audience to the movie as it would be seen as a very good movie that is well recognized and therefore the audience would trust it greatly. However we did not add any reviews or star rating to the poster just due to our desire to achieve simplicity. To make it more professional. We only wanted the audience to focus on the narrative we are trying to put across through the title, tag line and characters. Also as our target audience is female youth we knew that the most effective way in getting them to watch a movie wouldn’t be past reviews or awards instead it would be more influenced by word of mouth, so factual evidence of the movies greatness is less important.

In the magazine cover of our movie we had written in bold at the top of it “Best preview issue ever”. We used this to draw the attention of audiences and make them purchase the magazine, which is clearly focused on our movie. Therefore not just drawing the loyal consumers of the magazine but also new consumers as they believe this is the “best” issue so far. It is also written on the magazine cover that inside is an interview with the Love me Not star. This again re-establishes the fact Fabienne is the main character and also allows the audience to establish a relationship with her, as if the movie is reality and therefore the character is too. This also makes the reader intrigued to watch the movie if they find the actress interesting, which itself could be used as a USP to draw the audiences in if they feel that the actress is “special” in one way or the other

The power of Text

Our teaser trailer ended with a complete disequilibrium showing the main character breaking down. This itself is an effective way in making the audience want to watch the movie so that they would find out what will happen next. As it ends in a very dramatic note, whereas it started in a much more calm way. This challenges the audiences thoughts and makes them think of what could happen. This is essential to our movie as our movies aims to get the audience thinking and building the suspense to what will happen next rather than making it an obvious story line. The audience whilst watching our trailer from the start will instantly think it’s a “romantic teenage” movie however this was just an impression that we portrayed that is then completely contrasted with the future actions, showing that it is a psychological thriller full of negativity and challenging the audiences predictions.
