Dear members,
Today, the world knows the tragedy that occurred on 9/11 of 2001.
But do you know of a tragedy that occurred on 9/11 of 1965??
Well, on 11th September 1965, Dr. Ralph C Smedley, the founder of Toastmasters international passed away.
But not before seeing his organization, which he founded in 1924, celebrate its 40th anniversary.
During that occasion, he admitted that he never thought that his organization would become as big as it had. He never thought that it would survive for 40 years!! He, later, passed away in its 41st year. But now, Toastmasters International is in its 85th year!! And still growing!!
His desire and determination to give young people self-confidence - to become better communicators and leaders - was so strongly embraced by the world, that he himself was surprised!
It only tells us that sometimes our dreams may seem small. They may seem insignificant. But who knows? In due course of time, they could become even bigger than we ever imagined. And we might surprise ourselves.
So let’s not stop dreaming. Let’s not stop having hope. Instead, let’s dream big dreams. Let’s make big plans. And diligently work towards achieving them.
Is there a dream project you are unable
to start? Is there a new course you are postponing to join? Is there a special examination you are afraid to attempt?
Or simply put, in toastmasters alone, is there a speech you are not preparing? Is there a CC that you are postponing to achieve? Is there an Advanced Award you are not working towards? Is there an assignment you are afraid to take up?
Go ahead. Bite the bullet. Think. Decide. Work towards it. Yes. Sometimes we might fail. But who knows? We might succeed too. Even beyond our imagination. Like how our founder succeeded.
Do you know that he started the Toastmasters Club in 1922 itself? But it soon died because of a lack of enthusiasm and a lack of interest. Members did not think it useful. But did he give up his dream?
No. Dr Smedley was a die-hard optimist. He kept persisting. He kept persevering. He started it again in 1924. Since then, there was no turning back. He left his job as General Secretary of the YMCA. He began to devote full time to Toastmasters work. He wrote many instruction manuals. He wrote many books.
And his dedication and hard-work made this organization what it is today.
So, ladies and gentlemen, Dream Big. Work hard. You might surprise yourself. Beyond imagination.

On 7th Of February 2009, we came across a very hilarious, rib-tickling meeting, where 5 brilliant members of Manama Toastmasters Club had competed in our Humorous Speech Contest for the term January 2009-June 2009. Truth be told, we don’t know if we have it in us, unless we try it. Some might look serious, or unable to make us laugh easily, and they think that they can’t be funny, NEVER! But being in action is totally a different ball game. Don’t you agree? Congratulations to all the contestants:
- TM Zakaria M. Sulaiman- TM Chandra Liyanarachchi.- TM Khlid Amin- TM Guraz Wankdia- TM Chandrahasan
And our special applause to the winners: - TM Zakareya Sulaiman - 1st place (name check)- TM Chandra Liyanarachchi – 2nd runner-up- TM Khlid Amin – 3rd runner-up

Rose in idioms - 14 Feb 2009
A bed of roses A luxurious situation; an easy life. Who
said life would be a bed of roses? If I had a million bucks, I would be in a bed of roses.
Come out smelling like a rose Fig. to succeed; to do better than anyone
else in some situation. If I can just finish my research paper on time, I’ll come out smelling like a rose by the end of the school year.
Come up smelling like a rose and come up smelling like roses
Fig. to end up looking good or respectable after being involved in some difficult or notorious affair. I was surprised that my congressional representative came up smelling like a rose after his colleagues investigated him.
Everything’s coming up roses Fig. Everything is really just excellent. Life
is prosperous. Life is wonderful. Q: How are things going? A: Everything’s coming up roses.
Smell like a rose Fig. to seem innocent. I came out of the
whole mess smelling like a rose, even though I caused all the trouble.
There’s no rose without a thorn. Prov. to enjoy any beautiful or pleasant
thing, you must endure something difficult or painful. Mike: My bride is lovely and gracious, but I’m discovering that she has a terrible temper. Bill: There’s no rose without a thorn.

When I joined Toastmasters, I was at a stage in
my life when I set for myself few new goals. I had already accomplished what many people would call great. I was an administrative law judge for the State of California, having graduated from Yale University and the law school of the University of Southern California. I had recently bought a house which was quite comfortable for my family-my wife and three children. To most people these achievements seemed more remarkable given the fact that I am blind.
In 1988 I was challenged by a friend to speak at his wedding. Speaking in public was not the challenge. The challenge came from his request that my speech be a humorous one rather than an inspirational one. With trepidation and two night’s loss of sleep, I met the challenge. Shortly thereafter I joined Toastmasters with the goal of improving my ability to give humorous speeches.
I have come to understand that meaningful living entails continual growth. There is no stage of one’s life when development should stop. You should always be learning. You should keep discovering and developing your talents and skills. You should set a new goal after achieving the
STILL GROWING AFTER ALL THESE YEARS

one you previously set. As with all other living creatures, when we stop growing, we start dying.
Self growth requires your amenability to change, your readiness to move forward, your hunger for knowledge, and your eagerness for new experiences.
The process of growing and developing is a process of changing. Don’t resist change. Welcome it. You can be actively involved in the creation of your enriched and meaningful life by accepting, inviting, and encouraging change.
Change has no predetermined direction. It is not progressive or regressive. It is just a different set of circumstances. Progress comes from your readiness and willingness to use the changed circumstances to propel you forward to the life you imagine for yourself.
Growth feeds on knowledge. When you have a hunger for knowledge and regularly feed it, your life is fattened with options and opportunities.
Because you can learn from new experiences, you can promote self growth by seeking to do something new or doing something old in a new way.
Your participation in your Toastmasters meeting provides an ideal setting for self growth. Strengthening your skills of thinking, listening, and speaking will build the confidence you need for approaching change-change of whatever magnitude or rapidity. Your enhanced ability to organize your thoughts and express yourself logically will sharpen your perception of life ahead of you. At your
club meetings and other Toastmasters events you have at your disposal material and people from whom you can learn. Thus, your participation in Toastmasters can provide a combination of confidence, vision, and knowledge that will inspire you to seek out places and opportunities to put to use your newly developed talents and skills.
Be careful that you are not lured into believing that your growth can be measured by the number of speeches that you have done, or the number of educational awards you have achieved, or the short time in which you achieved them. Proceeding through a Toastmasters manual is not the same as progressing through it. With the former you rack up the numbers that are impressive in objective reports; with the latter you build the skills that are meaningful to your growth.
If today you can stand at the lectern and give a speech without the fear of fainting that you used to have, you have grown. If today you can present a five minute speech with clarity where as before you rambled without saying anything, you have grown. Growth is evident when your communication skills are enhanced-that is, when speech organization makes your presentation easy to follow; when your voice, gestures, and other body language add emphasis to your spoken words; when visual aids help you convey your information without distracting from your oral presentation, and when you can tell your personal stories and use humor to keep your listeners entertained.
Keep your focus on growing, not just giving speeches. Don’t
hesitate to repeat an assignment or a speech when the evaluator gives you suggestions on how to improve your speech. It is easier to implement the suggestions in a speech with which you are familiar than to try incorporating them in a new one. I have seen the most notable improvement in speaking skills from members of my Toastmasters clubs when they are practicing for a speech contest. They give the same speech over and over again and they incorporate, or at least try to incorporate, the suggestions from their peer Toastmasters. Repeating a manual assignment may lengthen the time it takes for you to get your next educational award, but it will also ensure that the award you get carries more than just outward recognition. It will be reflective of the fact that you have grown.
I got more than I bargained for when I first joined Toastmasters more than twenty years ago. Yes, I learned about putting humor in a speech. I also learned about the World Championship of Public Speaking, about becoming an accredited speaker, about establishing a professional speaking business, and about writing and publishing books. I have been asked by other professional speakers as to why I continue my membership in Toastmasters. I do because I am still growing.

Having couples as members in our club, will it help them to be better communicators at home? Why do you think so?
I quote the feelings of our new member B. D. Mori «I have seen that at Manama Toastmasters Club HEART ALSO LEARNS TO SPEAK». I don’t need to explain further to answer your question!.
I don’t believe that there should be a day in the year to celebrate with the loved ones, like the valentine...
Being a Valentine myself, how can I agree with you? Every day has 24 hours and theoritically should be same. However, we celebrate 1st January as the New Year. People around the world celebrate this day with pomp simply because our forefathers assigned a special meaning to this day by considering it as New Year. Same way, by having a dedicated day for lovers to express their love for each other by sending flowers, cards etc, people have a reason to celebrate. Otherwise, 14 February would have been one among 365.
It is 1924.. And Ralph Smedley is about to start the 1st ever Toasmtasers meeting..You are the MC...
I wish I had the privilege to get such an honor! But actually it was my great grandfather. Our name happens to be same.
In one word..
The secret of a happy married life is UNDERSTANDING And the secret of a happy unmarried life is IGNORENCE of the bliss of happy married life.
In more than one word...
The secret to keep MTM members enjoy each other’s company unconditionally is by not asking Table Topic questions.

Isaac MathewMadhavi TiwaryHaving couples as members in our club, will it help them to be better communicators at home? Why do you think so?
Of course yes. Ordinarily the talk at home needs to be about salt, sarees and shaving creams – hence convenient silence is preferred. Just imagine if the couple are toastmasters how much more spice they could talk about – the speakers’ faux pas, the fumbling grammarians, the table topic commentators’ going blank, the in-meeting naps of the timers – the list is long enough to keep the couple’s communication at home kicking and alive. They could even discuss the hundred ways to ditch the VP Education’s bugging calls or debate on the feasibility and chances of success of an invisibility potion to be used during the table topics sessions. In fact, they would be not just better communicators but probably compulsive communicators what with so many common juicy matters to tackle.
“I don’t believe that there should be a day in the year to celebrate with the loved ones, like the valentine.”
Well, any celebration is the accentuation of a practice and not in isolation of a practice. As such the celebration of love on a particular day is very much in order – it only reinforces what we any ways practise.Even though we constantly love some people in our lives, we can’t possibly be showering them with flowers and favours every hour, every day. But then, we need to do it one in a while, so why not on a special day? However, on careful thought, why not make any day special by “showing what you mean”!
It is 1924. And Ralph Smedley is about to start the 1st ever Toastmasters meeting. Your are the MC...
1924! How on earth did you get all the history of the botox treatments I have undergone since 1924???????????????????
In two words... The secret of a happy married life is - memory loss and the secret of a happy unmarried life is - romance regained.
In more than one word... The secret to keep MTM members is - to keep being multilingual – to speak skillfully, passionately the language of the mind and the language of the heart.

When we open our eyes in this life we all have one thing in comment, and that is the desirable wish to be a future leader but what most
of us don’t understand is that we are all leaders if we just implemented the great 11 skills of becoming leaders, those skills comes by practice and not by study, The leaders is those how obtain and share the Information they learned from life with others and not keeping the knowledge they gain from life for themselves. Because they believe in building a great productive generation, leaders are those who understand the needs of the people around them and how to bring their requests or (wishes) to reality, in my understanding the 11 skills of leaders are:

TM Zakaria has made us all be proud, when he won the majority of the trophies in the recent Area 3 contest, for International, Table Topics, Evaluation and Humorous speeches. He took the 1st place in the International Speech, Evaluation and Humorous Speech contests. This was held at Bahrain Society of Engineers on Friday 13th February 2009. Below are some special shots we managed to take:
We at PR tried to get some tips from TM Zakaria, and if possible, to show us what the magical recipe for such success is (We by now are all used to recipes of championships after the great workshop presented by DTM KK senior!). TM Zakaria emphasized on the point that we should keep participating as much as we can in the club contests and as a matter of fact, keep that as a “standard” to follow. Every contest is a catch for you, to shine and learn the best way. As he said: “You might lose in the 1st attempt, struggle in your second try, but definitely will reap the benefits at the third one!”. When we asked him what his feelings were on wining in such contests, he simply said: “I can’t explain it, unless you are in it..”. His little advice to all of us is to have more courage and participate regularly in these sorts of competitions and never hesitate in contacting him, and/or any other senior members for the necessary advices and guidance.

If there is one thing, I have to admit and say to you all my fellow members and dear friends, it would be: “THANK YOU!”. Yes, thank you for all your support, encouragement and cooperation that we have received after publishing our first Horizon for the year 2009. We really appreciate all that. We want to thank also those who have whispered in our ears and enlightened us with their valuable feedback and tips for improvements. We want this healthy “2-way-communications” to be continued and further improved in our coming Horizon issues.
For sure, it was a busy month, February, and so many things were happening (apart from the financial turmoil world wide), in the Toastmasters and in Manama Toastmasters Club territories. Many contests were conducted, BTACC 2009 preparations, joint meetings.. and yeah, the Valentine’s day too! I do remember when my fiancé asked me wither I am going to celebrate with her the Valentine this year. I replied sarcastically: “Valentine? 14th Feb? ahhh… Mine has no specific date!” She got a bit anxious with that statement. Nonetheless, I surprised her and bought her a BIG bouquet of RED flowers on the Valentine. Why? You might wonder. I just wanted to show her two things: 1. Expect good surprises always from me. And..
2. Show how I can sometimes “override” my own rules and beliefs for a person who deserves that. My friends, you have always astonished me with your unlimited support and I can’t express how lucky we Toastmasters are, to learn from each other in such a healthy environment. Please let us override our own personal benefits, for the betterment of all of us. Let us make the Horizon, the Club, our communities better... actually the best. Let’s make someone’s today better than his / her yesterday and his/her tomorrow much better than today..
See you soon and enjoy your reading... :)
