bake house used for cooking hot meals on those cold winter days, but it served as a social gathering place. Artifacts such as sewing needles, military buttons, pipe stems, and glass bottle fragments discovered in the remains of the building show that soldiers gathered there before the cozy fire to repair their uniforms, smoke a pipe, or maybe enjoy a nightcap with their compatriots.

Unfortunately for the residents of the fort, one January night in 1802, a fire destroyed the bake house, and threatened the nearby blockhouse and temporary powder magazine. The bake-oven itself survived the fire, though not unscathed, and a temporary shed was erected over it. For the next year and a half, there were many complaints about the bread being produced by that oven, some even calling the results unpalatable and unwholesome. By August 1804, a new bake house and oven were built, this time outside the fort palisade and near the south shore.

This summer, a historic bake-oven is returning to the fort. Site staff are working to construct a cobb oven (made of clay, sand and straw mixed together) with a roof structure to protect it from the elements. In the two centuries since the initial construction of the ovens at Fort St. Joseph, time has taken its toll and little remains to tell us exact-ly what the original ovens at the fort looked like. Fortunately, cobb and brick ovens were common throughout Europe and Canada in the 19th cen-tury, and those historic ovens have provided the necessary information to guide the construction of our bake-oven.

Last summer we began a journey in historic bread baking, using a large cast iron kettle to create an “oven” with an open fire (see photo). Visitors got to experience baking leavened bread in an era before the invention of modern commercial yeast, seeing, smelling, and savouring the results for themselves. With the construction of a bake-ov-en, our programming opportunities will certainly expand, and ideas are already being developed. We look forward to cooking up lots of tasty goodies and sharing more stories about the people who lived at Fort St. Joseph. Someday soon, visitors may even get a first-hand opportunity to bake their own loaf of bread! Copyright: © Parks Canada - printed with permis-sion.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 10, 2020 The Township of St. Joseph Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee is pleased to present an Out-door Art Show!

RICHARDS LANDING – The Township of St. Joseph Parks, Recreation and Culture Commit-tee will be presenting “Harvest of Artists” a new outdoor art and fine craft show to be held Satur-day, August 29, 2020. The event will be held at the Centennial Grounds in Richards Landing.

This year many of our favourite traditional events have been cancelled, leaving artists and community members hoping for some relief. As restrictions loosen, and researchers indicate that outdoor events can be held responsibly with social distancing, the Committee saw an opportunity to take advantage of our unique Centennial Grounds location for an outdoor art show. The Grounds are an ideal location to set up a variety of artists with open space to distance from one another. The space also gives guests the room to distance while enjoy-ing some recent work from the area’s many talent-ed artists.

Applications will be available for interested artists by August 13th, and are due August 26th. There will be a small fee for participating artists to cover promotional expenses, with any surplus being donated the Richard’s Landing Children’s Library. We are looking for artists who create original works in a variety of mediums such as: custom wood furniture, walking sticks, painters, print-makers, photographers, weavers, ceramicists and sculptors.

If you have any questions about applying as an artist, please call the Township of St. Joseph Office at 705-246-2625 ext. 201 or email Sherie at [email protected]. -30-

News ReleaseRCL BR 374 St. Joseph Island

At an Executive meeting of RCL Br 374 held on July 21, 2020 it was decided to try a ‘soft’ opening of the Lounge and Bar on Fridays only from 4 pm to 7 pm starting July 24. No food is served. This opening has been well received. As always, the Lounge is open to the Public.

It was also decided to hold a limited Friday Food event on Friday August 21, 2020. This will be done in accordance with all Algoma Public Health guide-lines in place, including the wearing of masks upon entrance and at all times unless seated at a table. Since seating is restricted due to COVID, we are strongly recommending take-out rather than dine-in. See the detailed Friday Food advertisement on page 7.

After the Branches last news release on June 22, we had many expressions of concern from the Public about the financial stability of our Legion Branch 374. Let us reassure you that we are one of the few Branches in our District that are financially stable. This is directly attributable to the outstanding sup-port that we get from our Community – Municipali-ties, Businesses and Citizens; and for that, President Dave Pearse, the Executive, and the entire Mem-bership, want to express our sincere appreciation for the financial support that has poured in during the time that the Branch has been closed due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Thank You!

Like everyone else, we do not know where this Pan-demic will take us. However, rest assured that our Branch Executive are striving to make our facilities available once again just as soon as we can safely do so under Algoma Public Health Guidelines for open-ing under COVID-19 Pandemic restrictions.
