W elcome to the March edition. I’m hoping that when you receive

your magazine we are free of snow and heading for Spring. It is snowing as I write, and I’m dreading having to drive anywhere tomorrow morning. It’s at times like this I could be tempted into living in town rather than a village!

This month I thought I’d run some articles about weddings alongside some local wedding-related services. My ‘little’ sister gets married this summer so it is the topic of conversation in my family….who are the bridemaids, what is she wearing, where is the reception, will I be invited!...etc etc. Weddings are wonderful occasions but I remember how stressful they can be – especially if you are not very organised! On the day before mine, I had all of our close family making DIY flower arrangements for the reception tables. There were some ‘interesting’ creations and it did help make the day memorable though I would recommend using a good local florist! Have a read through if your special day is this year and remember to

source products and services locally if possible. Don’t forget your mum on the 18th March! There

are some great ideas for gifts in local shops – so you have no excuses!

Last month I put in a special plea to local organisations to let me know what was going on in the area. I received lots of responses from groups I didn’t even know existed! I hope your new listing in the magazine helps swell your numbers.

“We recently sent out a questionnaire to all of our customers and the feedback was excellent,” says Nicola. Comments included “Your care was exceptional” and “I understand the York office has only been operating for a short time - I would like to wish you every success & hope that any further staff you recruit are as efficient, conscientious and professional as the team you presently have working for you.“

The Green ManThis carving of “The Green Man” is thought to come from Warter Priory. Built in the late 17th or early 18th Century the possessions of the Priory were sold off in the 1960s and the beautiful gardens were bulldosed into the lake. We have a pair or the fi nials.

Lendal TowerThe steps from this spiral staircase are from Lendal Tower on Lendal Bridge York. The tower was built around 1300 and was originally part of York’s defence system.

St Mary’s AbbeySome of the stone we have is very old indeed, in fact, we have stone from St Mary’s Abbey, built in 1055 by Stephen of Whitby and demolished by Henry VIII during the Reformation in 1533. The centre photo is of stone from York Minster and the Arch sections are thought to predate 1533.

Stone TroughWe usually have a few in but can probably fi nd you one to suit your requirements.

Millwheels and GrindstoneCome and go all the time. Now usually used for House or Village name stones, as a garden feature stood on end or as a water feature. They can be hundreds of years old or fairly recent.

Our interest in reclaimed items is not just confi ned to stone. We have Victorian glass fi shing fl oats and a Lobster basket in cane. Victorian glazed edgings are usually in stock and we do have some Cast Iron pieces namely Rollers, a Vice, an Anvil and occasionally a fi replace. Always worth a look.

The idea for Zenki came when Dave and Steve discovered a need for a good tile supplier in the local area. They decided to open a tile shop next to Derwent Vale Building Company at the Windmill House Estate, Showfield Lane in Malton. However, once it was under way, the project took on a life of its own!

They added: “As we were in a small area, rather than simply displaying a square metre of every type of tile we supplied, which I find pretty uninspiring, we decided to use the space to present new ideas – and it just progressed from there!

“We really would like customers to use Zenki as an inspiration to get creative, ex-press themselves and try new design ideas in their homes

– whatever they would like to try, we can create it.”

A full design and fitting ser-vice is available for Zenki cus-tomers. Dave and Steve can build pretty much anything the customer needs. The idea for Zenki came when Dave and Steve discovered a need for a good tile supplier in the local area. They decided to open a tile shop next to Derwent Vale Building Company at the Windmill House Estate, Showfield Lane in Malton. However, once it was under way, the project took on a life of its own!

They added: “As we were in a small area, rather than simply displaying a square metre of every type of tile we supplied, which I find pretty uninspiring, we decided to use the space to present new ideas – and it just progressed from there!

“We really would like customers to use Zenki as an inspiration to get creative, ex-press themselves and try new design ideas in their homes

– whatever they would like to try, we can create it.”

Rat Race has been operating from York for three years, but with a

new showroom at Clifton Moor and a special event in Yorkshire this month, they’re putting a fi rmer footprint down – and it’s a muddy one, at that!

You might already have spotted some of Rat Race’s professional fi tness trainers leading teams of people through their Urban Gym. These are full, energetic workouts carried out in York city centre, which alternate jogging with circuit training-style exercises that turn the urban landscape into a ready-made gym.

Trainers are divided into groups according to the level intensity they want to work out, whether that’s to be challenged hard, or work at a more gentle pace. The stationery exercise spots are sensitively chosen for being slightly off the beaten track, to ensure no-one ends up feeling like a public spectacle!

Rat Race was set up by Jim Mee and David Powell,

schoolmates who share a lifelong love of adventure sports. Supplying high quality clothing and equipment for running, cycling, triathlon and mountaineering is just the start of the full-bodied service they provide.

Their new showroom at Clifton Moor is an adventure sports mecca. It’s equipped with a running machine for you to try out your running shoes, a full selection of bikes and even a swimming pool where you can test out the wet suits.

The bike showroom boasts brands not available anywhere else in York and a range for every need - from time trial and mountain to cyclocross. There is even the UK’s only Calfee Sizer Cycle to make sure you have the perfect size frame! A bike workshop alongside with highly qualifi ed mechanics ensures that you keep your wheels in perfect condition.

professional first dance. Training engaged couples is big business for local dance teachers so give one a call to talk about your ideas. Go Bollywood, sweep her off her feet Strictly-style, or get the entire wedding party involved in a rendition of Michael Jackson’s Thriller video. That number from Dirty Dancing is a favourite – not one for grooms with bad backs, though. If you’re feeling really brave, you can dance your way down the aisle – type ‘JK Wedding Dance’ into Google to see how that’s done.

The entertainmentA DJ or a band is just the start of a good wed-

ding reception. Jukeboxes are a good choice, too. A wedding reception is usually enough to get just about everyone onto the dancefloor – but what about the confirmed non-dancers? Roulette and poker tables go down well, as do Scalextric, bouncy castles and pinball.


Blowing the budget is the easiest thing to do when you’re planning a wedding.

For a start, you don’t necessarily know what each item is going to cost beforehand. And once you’ve started looking round at venues, flowers, outfits and caterers, you’re bound to start falling in love with the slightly pricier items. Short and sweetThere’s a lot of standing around at weddings,

which can seem to go on forever. Starting your ceremony slightly later, even 4pm, will reduce your venue hire, drink and alcohol costs.

A select crowdKeeping the wedding guest list down is a sure-

fire way of reducing costs. You could consider

not including plus ones on your invitations – careful table planning will ensure no-one is left among strangers.

Dress up for lessA brand new wedding dress is

an extravagance you might not be able to do without – but the way they depreciate rivals new cars! In the name of research, pop ‘wedding dress’ into eBay’s search box and consider the savings. For bridesmaids and groomsmen,

consider giving them a colour scheme and letting them put together their own outfits, accessorised with matching hairpieces or sash belts for the women and cummerbunds, ties or buttonholes for the men.

Until relatively recently the courts of England and Wales have taken no account of agreements designed to tell a judge

what to do with a couple’s assets in the event of a divorce. In a ground breaking case last year the courts ruled that a pre-nuptial agreement between a German heiress and her former husband was binding. The court gave strong suggestions that couples entering in to such contracts freely should be held to them. This said the courts do have a duty to ensure financial settlements are fair and first consideration is given to the needs of any children however the point to note is that pre-nuptial agreements are now highly persuasive.

Pre-marital agreements can provide for a fair division of property assets before a marriage or civil partnership is entered into. They can include important provision to protect the privacy of the parties, their family and their businesses. Couples entering in to a second marriage or civil partnership may bring with

them a considerable amount of wealth built over years of hard work. It is doubtful that should this subsequent marriage or civil partnership fail after a short while that those involved will be happy about parting with their hard earned cash acquired prior to the marriage or civil partnership. The couple may have children from a previous relationship for whom they wish to preserve their wealth. Pre-marital agreements can go some way to providing protection.

The happiest day of your life – or the most stressful? Think of the word ‘wedding’, and the word ‘nerves’ is as likely to come to mind as ‘bridesmaids’, ‘bouquets’ and ‘champagne’. Catherine Lee, owner of Kaleidoscope Virtual Assistant Services, has made a living and a business out of being highly organised. She got married last year and made sure the run-up to her wedding and her big day itself went like clockwork. Here are her tips on how to do it.

1. Make a decision and stick to itSome of the worst wedding stress comes from being unable to decide on the right option. Try to have a reasonably clear idea of what you want before you even open a catalogue or set foot in a shop. Then, take a tip from the typical executive: if you like it, go for it. Sometimes making a decision is the most important thing.

2. Make a decision and stick to it!Yes, it’s that one again. This is your wedding and it’s up to you how you organise it. Don’t let anyone else tell you how to do it, ignore the doom-mongers who say weddings are a nightmare to organise and do it your way, in your own time.

3. Set your maximum budgetUnless you’ve already organised a wedding in

the past five years, you’re going to have no idea of what things cost in advance, so it’s difficult to set a specific budget. Setting a maximum spend ensures the budget won’t run away with you. If money’s tight, choose one thing that you won’t compromise on, and then go for value op-tions in everything else.

4. Work far in advanceDon’t kid yourself there’s plenty of time, even if your big day is months off. You never know when you might need some contingency time to sort something out. Besides, your entertainer, florist and cake-maker will have bookings in their diaries years in advance. Priorities should be your venue and your minister. I’d recommend checking everything off your list six months in advance as a minimum.

5. Limit your workloadAnother tip from the executives – why do something yourself if there are good people out there who can make a better job of it than you? Delegate, delegate, delegate. If money’s tight, rope in your friends. DIY wedding stationery and a homemade cake are great if that’s your sort of thing, but they do take time. The only bit of DIY Catherine did was her wedding favours – 70 gingerbread men and women took two days to bake and decorate. You have been warned!

For the topping: 3oz / 75g butter4oz / 100g flour2oz / 50g Demerara sugar

4 x salmon fillets, skinned6 tbsp teriyaki sauce1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed250g packet medium egg noodles2 tsp sesame seed oil1 tsp grated root ginger6 salad onions, trimmed and thinly slices40g radishes, trimmed and thinly sliced2 tbsp sesame seeds30ml honey, warmed

This is a great way to jazz up salmon – with a Japanese teriyaki sauce glaze served with sesame flavoured noodles. Soak the wooden skewers in water for 30

minutes before threading on the strips of salmon to prevent them from burning under the hot grill.

Glazed Salmon Skewers

1. Slice each salmon fillet widthways into 2 strips and place the strips in a shallow dish. Mix together the teriyaki sauce and garlic and pour over the salmon. Cover and leave to marinate at room temperature for 30 minutes.

2. Preheat the grill to medium. Thread the strips of salmon onto 8 wooden skewers. Grill the salmon skewers for 3-4 minutes on each side until just cooked through.

3. Meanwhile, cook the noodles according to the packet instructions. Drain well. Heat the sesame oil in a wok or large non-stick frying pan and add the ginger, spring onions, radishes and sesame seeds. Stir fry for 2-3 minutes then Add the noodles and toss well to mix.

4. Just before serving, brush the salmon skewers with the warmed honey and grill for a further minutes. Divide the sesame noodles between four serving bowls and top with the salmon skewers.

Spiced Rhubarb Cake

Rinse and chop the rhubarb into 1in / 2cm chunks. Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time beating well to avoid curdling. Fold in the flour and the spices. Spoon the mixture into a greased and lined 8in / 20cm cake tin. Level out the mixture and cover with the prepared rhubarb and sprinkle with sugar.

Make the topping by rubbing the butter into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs and stirring in the sugar. Spoon over the rhubarb. Bake for ¾ hour at 180°C/350°F/Gas mark 4 until firm and springy to the touch.

Toyota GT 86It’s about time Toyota got interesting again and

the GT 86 certainly floats our boat. Rumoured to cost around £28,000 when it goes on sale in the UK, the rear-wheel drive car features a 2.0-litre 197bhp unit and will hit 60mph in seven seconds. It certainly looked good on the stand and was a welcome break from the green concepts doing the rounds everywhere else.

Last year’s Tokyo Motor Show was dominated by green technologies and wacky concepts – but among the madness there were some important model launches.The show isn’t one of the biggest. Spread over four halls you can get around it easily in a day – unlike the blister-inducing mass of motors that is Europe’s biggest show in Frankfurt, Germany.

However, as the Japanese makers’ home event, it is absolutely packed with innovation. I spent two days scouring the halls and soaking up the culture, but eventually these five emerged as my picks of the show.

Subaru BRZSubaru has been having a hard time of it in the UK of late, so the BRZ comes as a much-needed breath of fresh air. Jointly developed

with Toyota, it’s the sister car to the GT 86, and in the company’s famous corporate blue it looked fantastic. The BRZ has slightly different body panels and interior to the Toyota. Just don’t mention the new, and very bland, Impreza also on display on the stand...

Nissan Juke NismoThe Juke has been crying out for a real sporty model and it looks like Nissan may finally answer our prayers thanks to its tuning arm Nismo.

This is the first car that’s been given the Nismo treatment and although currently billed as a “concept” it’s highly likely we’ll see it on our roads soon. Exterior and interior tweaks will be matched with a breathed-on powerplant.

Mercedes F 125!We’re not big fans of concepts that don’t

mean anything, but Mercedes was quick to point out the F 125! showcases the future design direction of the next S-Class. The concept featured

fuel cell technology which would give it a range of 1,000km, a lightweight body construction, gullwing doors and a cloud-based infotainment system. But ignore all that, it’s the looks that are most likely to shape future luxury barges from the firm.

Hino eZ CargoTucked away in the corner of the truck section of the show was this fantastic delivery van. Not only does it look superb, but it showcases EV

technology and a clean uncluttered design that would make Apple proud. A spokesman for Hino told us it has a range of 50kms, can charge in six hours and hit 70kph. Trials will take place next year before a decision is made whether to put it into production. We just hope the looks are carried over – it certainly beats a boring Transit.

Pepper plants can be unbelievably pretty too, with fruits in a range of shapes and colour, on compact plants and preceded by small

and very pretty white flowers. This is a plant with great ornamental as well as edible potential.

Both chilli and sweet - or bell - peppers can be grown in a greenhouse border, or on a sunny, sheltered spot on the patio.

Sweet peppers, especially the red ones, are very high in vitamin A and both red and green peppers are very high in vitamin C. Chilli peppers also have a good supply of vitamins C and A and contain both beta-carotene and something called capsaicin which is believed to have a useful effect on blood cholesterol levels.

The seeds are readily obtainable from many catalogues or garden centres but make sure you take into account the level of heat that each type delivers. Most seed packets and catalogues do make it very clear.

Sow the seeds between now and early April. I use a multi-purpose or a seed compost, but for good germination you will need to provide a bit of extra warmth, ideally from a heated propagator positioned in a spot where it receives plenty of natural light. If you don’t have the time or facilities to raise your own from seed, you can always buy a few plants in a garden centre or send off for them.

Keep the plants a tiny bit drier than you would a tomato plant and feed regularly with a high-potash liquid feed (“tomato food’). This helps to keep the plants growing strongly and the potash will encourage plenty of flowers and so fruits to form.

If you are going for plants in pots, choose a planter that has good drainage and is 30cm or more in diameter, adding broken pots for extra drainage. Once there is no danger of late frosts you can even put them outside in a sheltered, sunny spot.

If you’re after the hottest possible heat from your chilli peppers, then you’ll find this comes from fruits that are totally ripe and from peppers that are grown in warmer conditions.

If you are growing sweet peppers in patio pots then you are likely to find that there are still some unripened fruits on the plants when temperatures start to fall at the end of summer. To increase

the chances of these ripening and increasing to full size, move the pots to a warmer spot or, if possible, to a porch, conservatory or greenhouse where they’ll get extra warmth and also plenty of natural light.

If you want chillies that look particularly good on the patio there are plenty to choose from. ‘Black Pearl’ is a hot chilli pepper with a distinct blackish tinge to the mature leaves and fruits that are black early on and mature darkest red. Hello again, School is now cracking down in preparation for my GCSE exams, which – in all fairness – may cause me to get a decent grade, but right now I want nothing more than to have an essay-free weekend where I can just sit back and relax.

I’m now less than three months away from taking my GCSE exams, and no matter what I tell others: I’m terrified. In my opinion, it’s not so bad revising for one or two, as I did back in January, where you can focus your revision on one module for one subject. But sooner or later I’ll need to be revising day and night for almost 15 exams! To be honest, I just can’t wait until it’s all over and I can sit back and relax for a few months. Well, discounting my month in Kenya, which will be fun – but in no way relaxing.

Even though my Kenya expedition is months away, preparations have already been made for my trip. Towards the end of February I had my first of many vaccinations required for travelling to Africa. Starting the course of jabs this early sounds ridiculous, but a few of them need to be done months in advance, and doing it this way prevents having seven different needles poked in your arm at once! In other preparations, I am now ‘hiking’ up my local hill to try to wear in my new walking boots for the trip. I had advice of a friend to stand in water with them on your feet – this supposedly causes them to mould to the right shape!? Though to be honest, I

think I’ll do it the more traditional way; at least this way I can let the dog have a breath of fresh air!

When we consider acquiring a new pet there are many things to think about be it a cat or a dog. One thing we don’t like to

think about, though, is the possibility that our new pet may become ill at some point, and worse still that they may become ill with a condition which they have inherited from their parents.

Unfortunately, in the pedigree breeding world, dogs especially, there are many such conditions. These have often resulted from breeding for cosmetic appearances rather than health, and occasionally from unscrupulous breeders and breeding techniques such as inbreeding.

The conditions range from orthopaedic prob-lems such as hip and elbow dysplasia to opthal-mic conditions like progressive retinal atrophy or hereditary cataracts.

Conditions related to the conformation of a breed (or the way it looks) include entropion and ectropion (deformities of the eyelids) and disc problems in dogs with backs that are very long in relation to the length of their legs or soft palates that are too long and cause noisy breathing in breeds with short noses such as bulldogs, Cava-lier King Charles Spaniels and pugs.

These conditions that are linked to the “look” of the breed are often what is known as polygenic, which means that they are influenced by several different genes and so aren’t easy to detect in screening tests. However, other problems that are polygenic aren’t as easy to pick up until they cause a problem, such as heart problems like dilated cardiomyopathy.

Over recent years screening tests have been developed for a lot of disorders. Hip and elbow dysplasia is screened for using the scoring scheme where x-rays of these joints are assessed by a panel of experts and given a mark for dif-ferent aspects of the joint which is then added together to give an overall score, which should be as near to zero as possible. Most of the eye con-ditions are checked for in both the parents, and sometimes the puppies, by an expert opthalmolo-gist. Other genetic conditions need either blood tests or cheek swabs to test for them and these include Von Willebrands disease in Dobermanns (a condition where the blood doesn’t clot prop-erly) and Copper Toxicosis in Bedlington Terriers (a condition where copper builds up in the liver over time and stops it working properly).

Most breeders are very responsible and these days are doing all they can to try and breed these problems out of their specific breed. Where screening tests exist, they will have had them done and be able to provide certification as proof of the result. However, it is always worth checking with a breeder and having a thorough look at the pedigree of the particular animal you are buying to ensure that no in-breed-ing has taken place.

This is sad for any cat, but especially so for a friendly chap like Alf who just adores human company. It’s vey hard to resists Alf’s undeniable charms as he sings out to anyone that passes him, guaranteeing him a few minutes of fuss. Being such a well rounded cat Alf would

suit just about any home environment. He is an older chap at 13 years, but still has plenty of get up and go and energy – and has been given a clean bill of health by the vet. We could see Alf happily playing and being the centre of attention with older children, or being just as contented sitting on the lap of an older person, enjoying the finer things in life.
