JAWABAN PEMICU 3
1. Assignment 1 (10)
The Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube is a device that receives a gas stream (say at 10 bar and
295 K) and divides it into two streams with equal mass flow rates and equal pressures (say 1
bar). There is no mechanical work and heat transfer involve in the operation of this device.
Show by using the first and the second law of thermodynamics, that maximum temperature
difference between the outlet streams is 501 K. Hint: largest temperature difference can be
obtained only if gas expansion is a reversible process. Use Cp gas of kJ/(kmol.K).
JAWAB
Diketahui :
Ti = 295 K
pi = 10 bar
pc = ph = 1 bar
cp = 30 kJ/kmol.K
Penyelesaian :

Termodinamika
Berdasarkan hukum termodinamika I :
+ + =
diasumsikan () = 0

2. Assignment 2 (35)
Electrical power is needed to supply electricity for constant lighting and heat for
maintaining constant temperature environment in the greenhouse for growing a vegetable. Gas
engines employed to produce the required electrical power are also producing waste heat that
could be utilized further o generate additional electrical power. The thermal emergy generated
by the gas engines is more than adequate to heat the greenhouse and utilizatio of the excess
(waste) heat is desireable. The waste heat is available at around 100C and at this relatively
low temperature a Rankine cycle with an organic compound as the working fluid known as
Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) shown above will be the most suitable option for heat reovery.
The following picture shows a typical waste heat recovery system.
The working fluid used ini the ORC is ammonia. Superheated ammonia vapor enters the turbine
at 95C. Ammonia exits the condensor as saturated liquid at 25C and leaves the pump at 5
Mpa. Based on the following assumptions:

3. Assignment 3 (35)
A refrigeration system employing a two-stage compression with intercooling between the
stages is shown in Figure 1 including the fluidpath in the T-S diagram. A central role is played
by a liquid-vapor separator, called a flash chamber. Refrigerant exiting the condenser at state
5 expands through a valve and enters the flash chamber at state 6 as a two-phase liquid-vapor
mixture with quality x. In the flash chamber, the liquid and vapor components separate into
two streams. Saturated vapor exiting the flash chamber enters the heat exchanger at state 9,
where intercooling is achieved by means of a direct contact heat exchanger. Relatively low-
temperature saturated vapor enters the heat exchanger at state 9, where it mixes with higher-
temperature refrigerant leaving the first compression stage at state 2. A single mixed stream
exits the heat exchanger at an intermediate temperature at state 3 and is compressed in the
second compressor stage to the condenser pressure at state 4. Saturated liquid exiting the flash
chamber at state 7 expands through a second valve into the evaporator. On the basis of a unit
of mass flowing through the condenser, the fraction of the vapor formed in the flash chamber
equals the quality xof the refrigerant at state 6.

Data:
Refrigerant 134a is the working fluid. Saturated vapor at -30C enters the compressor
operating at lower pressure, condenser pressure is 12 bar, compressor(s) operates
isentropically, and the refrigeration capacity of the system is 10 tons. The flash chamber and
direct contact heat exchanger operate at 4 bar. Saturated liquid streams at 12 and 4 bar enter
the high- and low-pressure expansion valves, respectively.
Determine:
For the two-stage system shown in Figure 1: (a) The power input the first and the second
compressor (in kW), (b) The coefficient of performance for this system.
For the simple one stage system shown in Figure 2: (a) The power input to the compressor (in
kW), (b) The coefficient of performance for this system, (c) Which system has the higher
coefficient of performance? Explain.
Use the properties table of R-134a is given in the attachment and the following assumptions:
Isentropic compression of the refrigerant to the condenser pressure.
Heat transfer fom the refrigerant as it flows at constant pressure through the condenser.
Throttling procss to a two-phase liquid-vapor mixture.
