    1. GENERAL

    1.1 INTRODUCTION

    This document shall be read in conjunction with the Specification for Piping Design andDrafting (H-652), which describes the mandatory requirements for Piping Designdevelopment, as agreed with the Client.The information contained in this document is further instructions to the design team andeach DEC is responsible for its implementation.This document will be supplemented with additional job-notes during the course of theproject.

    Avoid changes in your design. If it works and meets the project requirements, then do notchange. Revisions to AFC isometrics should be kept to an absolute minimum.Each team member is responsible to execute the required quality checks as per companyinstructions specified in the listed documents (see previous paragraph).

    1.4 COST

    All task force members shall execute their work with a constant alertness for all cost aspects,and strive for an optimum and efficient design using a minimum of welds, fittings (e.g. elbows),and pipe. The piping designer is also responsible for:

    Proper material management (update bulk MTO data as per design developments).

    Maximum use of purchased bulk commodities in the detail design.

    Maximum use of available steel for supporting piping to avoid additional support steelstructures.

    1.5 PLANNING, SCHEDULES AND PRIORITIES

    Each team member is responsible for meeting the schedules as defined for the project, or for thearea the team-member is working in. Schedules are prepared for piping study completion, noz-zle orientations (DICS), and isometric production. Ensure you are aware of these schedules!Unavoidable delays are to be addressed to the Lead Engineer in time.

    2. GENERAL DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

    In general, eccentric reducers shall be used. Concentric reducers shall only be used ifrequired for process or instrumentation reasons.

    A drain is only allowed on eccentric reducers with a minimum size 10.Check limitations when drains are on heavy wall specs. (Ref. Para.3.1 of H-652)Locating drains on reducers takes preference if this saves a pipe-weld (avoiding a pipesection).

    Do not locate a spectacle blind between two valves. The valve bodies will obstruct theremoval of the (extended) bolts. Provide a spool-piece at one end of the spectacle blind.

    SPOOL PIECE

    Standard foundation heights will be (incl. grout):

    Horizontal pumps: 300mmVertical pumps: 400mm

    Vertical vessels: 150mmSkid-mount equipment 50 mm

    Elevations on piping documents shall be shown as EL. + 0000This means either Centerline Pipe or Face of Flange.Deviations shall be shown, e.g. B.O.P. EL. + 0000Platform elevations shall be shown as T.O.S. EL. + 0000This platform elevation is always underside grating.

    Pipe bending shall not be applied, only where specified by Process department .

    Ensure that all design developments affecting the bulk MTO are communicated to theMTO engineer. Ensure that correct line-number breaks and area-breaks are maintained

    to avoid MTO conflicts.(See also H-655: Piping Materials Quantity Control)

    Final hook-up of distribution systems (e.g. flare, cooling water, etc.) with respect ofheader and sub-headers, are to be determined in the piping study phase, and the relatedmaterials adapted in Marian (Piping Designer to inform MTO engineer).

    Minimum distance between welds at pipe-branches is 50 mm(for details, see para.11.3)Note that the 3D-CAD system checks from the centerlines of the branches! The de-signer/checker himself must check for the correct distance, taking into account the fol-lowing criteria: Pipe O.D., wall-thickness, branch-fitting dimension (especially for wel-dolets), reinforcing pad dimensions (if applicable). DONT DESIGN TOO TIGHT.

    When equipment is (to be) purchased with an odd or non-standard nozzleconnection(s), ensure that the vendor also provides the matching counter-flange (incl.bolting and gaskets), drilled to match the pipe spec.

    Fixed AG-UG piping connections must have an adequate field-fit provision toaccommodate differential settlements or misplacement of UG piping.Examples include UG cooling water connected to exchangers. An offset spool (min. 500mm) with field welds has to be included in the design between the equipment nozzle andUG piping, to allow adjustment for installation tolerances.The same applies to UG firewater connections to (prefabricated) Deluge houses. Ensurethe deluge house can accommodate such hook-up spool.

    3. ISOMETRIC REQUIREMENTS

    3.1 ISOMETRIC RELEASE

    The release of isometrics for distribution shall be conform the agreed isometric scheduleand priority requirements as prepared for the respective areas or project.

    Distribution shall be focused on releasing all isometrics of the same line-number per areato enable material trending. Revisions to AFC isometrics (with material impact) require thehighest priority due to timely material deliveries.

    If a previously distributed/ issued isometric splits, the new distribution/ issue must includeboth sheets with the same revision. This will ensure correct material handling in Marian.

    Isometrics with priority-1 hold-materials may not be distributed as B1 (checked) isometric.To enable Pipe Stress & Support to work on these systems such an isometric is to bedistributed for information (e.g. rev. A1 in PIAS). Other material developments to thatLPA (Line Per Area) must be reported to the MTO engineer for manual update of MTOExplorer.

    3.3 ISOMETRIC BREAKS

    No automatic isometric-split (by PDMS) is allowed. One Pipe in PDMS shall fit on oneisometric sheet. If a Pipe requires more isometric-sheets, a forced-split will be required(i.e. more pipes of the same LPA).

    Separate isometrics have to be made for each pipe class. Only next rating classes onthe same isometric are allowed! (e.g. 300# flg in 150# line to suit continuation isometric.)

    An isometric break shall be applied when there is a change in:

    Line number Material type

    Design condition

    Paint code

    Location (Unit, Rack, Sleeper)

    Ensure the isometric break is conform the line-number/area break as defined for materialallocation.

    A split between two isometrics shall be preferably at a valve or flange. When splitting ata valve, ensure that the gasket is on the isometric with the related valve (ensuring acorrect bolting extraction).

    Keep small bore systems (Called Field isometrics) separate from large bore systems

    (Called Shop isometrics), as logically feasible.

    Field-welds of two different materials must be avoided. Such a weld (if unavoidable)must always be on a shop isometric.

    Keep approx. 50mm clearance at the bottom of the material listing on your firstdistribution (B1) isometric, to accommodate future pipe-support materials.

    6. VALVE AND CONTROL SETS

    6.1 LOW-TEMPERATURE PIPING

    Valves in low-temperature liquid systems (cryogenic) are generally equipped with an extendedbonnet to allow vapor space between body cavity and gland seals to protect the stem seals. Theorientation of the stem is therefore limited to ensure proper functioning of this feature. See theSGUI 04-2801-01.027 (Low Temperature Piping Systems) and the appropriate pipe-specs fordetails.

    Valve orientations:Two services are to be distinguished:Liquid and/or liquid/vapor service100% gas service

    Valves in liquid and/or liquid/vapor service shall be installed with the stem orientatedupwards (preferred), or with a maximum inclination of 45 deg. From the vertical (1). Thisorientation prevents the (cold) liquid to flow into the bonnet extension and make contactwith the stem packing.

    Drain valves shall be installed likewise. The drain connections shall be provided withsupport/bracing, preferably to the header.

    Valve stems in no-flow connections (such as vents and pressure connections) may beinstalled at an angle up to 90 from vertical (i.e. they may be installed in vertical pipes).

    Valve stems in 100% gas service may be installed at an angle up to 90 from vertical(i.e. they may be installed in vertical pipes).

    When gate and ball valves have a pressure equalising hole (body cavity reliefprovisions), the high-pressure site of a valve in closed position shall be identified on theisometric with HP so ensure proper installation of the valve.H.P. shall be indicated on P&ID by process

    11.2 HYDRAULIC BOLT TENSIONING

    Hydraulic nolt tensioning shall be used tor tightening the bolts of flanged connections ofequipment and piping where the operating conditions require the stress distribution in the bolts tobe properly controlled to obtain a reliable joint. These conditions generally occur at high pressureand elevated temperature in conjunction with a medium which is difficult to seal.

    11.3 MINIMUM WELD DISTANCES

    The minimum distance between welds is 50 mm (or 2 x wall thickness, whichever is thegreatest). This distance is to be measured from weld-edge to weld-edge. The heavier the wallthickness, the larger the welds become. Do not design too tight!!

    The following tables can be used as a reference for pipe study preparation and isometricproduction. Note that these dimensions are the bare minimum.Add extra space (25 mm minimum) to accommodate tolerances and discrepancies.
