Balasubramanian. ABalasubramanian is a Territory Sales Manager (South) for mobile and crawler cranes at Manitowoc for the last one and half years. Prior to this he was handling construction equipment sales for a number of key dealerships for eight years. Why did you join Manitowoc?

I’ve been with the crane industry for more than eight years, and I always wanted to represent leading brands like Manitowoc and Grove. I am very motivated to be part of a team dealing with the best brands in the crane industry. What is your best experience at Manitowoc?

My time at Manitowoc has been so exciting as I have learned a lot in the last year and half such as the features and benefits of our cranes and the new applications for our products and especially how to convince our customers to realise the value of our cranes. In addi-tion, the Wind Seminar 2012 for energy and infrastructure custom-ers at Chennai was one of the best experiences for me. The seminar helped me learn about various applications of mobile and crawler cranes and offered me a fantastic opportunity to increase the busi-ness network with new and existing customers.

Suman DasSuman Das, the Regional Sales Man-ager (South) for tower cranes, joined Manitowoc in February 2012. Prior to that, he worked for leading construc-tion equipment manufacturers like Ingersoll Rand and Schwing Stetter in India for 10 years. Why did you join Manitowoc?

I’ve worked for some of the world’s leading construction equipment man-ufacturers before and always wanted to gain knowledge on new product lines in new territories with new challenges. Potain is a leader in tower crane manufacturing so I thought I could add value to my personal development, the organi-zation and could learn more about key account management. What is your best experience at Manitowoc?

We were working on L&T’s challenging requirements for luff-ing cranes in Mumbai for a high-rise construction project. Ankush Lokare from Manitowoc Crane Care and Hans Olsson from our Manitowoc office in Europe, provided extensive technical support for the customer. And when the customer gave their order for three units of the MR 225 and one MR160, I was thrilled. I look forward to more such challenging experiences in the future.

Voice of Customer

RRC Ventures Private Limited

RRC Ventures started eight years ago in West India and is now expanding to Southern India.

We have been very busy with projects and recently added a Potain MCi 85 A crane to our fleet to

assist with a multi-specialist hospital project we are building in Hiranandani. We had to finish

the project within 15 months which was why we decided to add a Potain crane to our fleet. The

MCi 85 A has increased the speed of the project dramatically. We are also very happy with the

Manitowoc Crane Care after sales service because they are very prompt and always fix up the

crane when any issues come up within 24 hours. For such a competitive price, Potain offers unbeatable features on a quality crane.

Rajesh Patel, Director

Likproof India Pvt. Limited

Likproof India is a major construction company in India, specializing in rebuilding deteriorating

structures. Most of our projects are in Mumbai with very tight schedules. To meet these stringent

requirements, nothing beats a Potain tower crane. We currently own three Potain MCi 85 A

cranes which are involved in many big projects like High Land Lokhandwala township, Orbit

plaza shopping Mall. We are very happy with the cranes’ performance and what’s particularly

impressive is Manitowoc Crane Care after sales service. Parts availability is fast and help is

always nearby. The cranes have been exceptional in helping us meet customer demands. We plan to buy more Potain cranes in the near future.

productivity. Currently all three Potain MCi 85 As are working for residential projects in Mumbai

and we are very satisfied with their performance. They are quality machines that were built for

easy maintenance, transport and assembly. We plan to visit the Potain factory in France for

training and to gain technical knowledge. The Manitowoc Crane Care team is also a big bonus.

Our experience with these cranes has been so good we are planning to add a Potain MC 125 to our busy fleet.

Vishal Ramjiyani, Director

Darode-Jog Builders Pvt Ltd

Darode-Jog Builders is a full scale building organization that is growing and succeeding, aided

by our Potain tower crane. We currently own one Potain MC 125 crane that is working on a

residential project - Liviano in Kharadi, Pune which will be there for two years. The total land for

this project is 14 acres but the crane is now working on Phase I which is on eight acres of land

area. There will be four towers in total with 400 flats. We chose Potain because it is a well-known

brand that doesn’t disappoint. The crane is easy to use and works very efficiently with little

maintenance required. We are happy we purchased this crane and will be strong supporters of Potain in the future.

Nitin Abdar, Project head

C.L. Shirole Engineers and Builders

Potain cranes are the machine of choice for construction work in India. We have been in the

construction business for a long time but we used to do lifting manually as we had no cranes.

These days, however, we need to work much faster to meet tight deadlines so we now have two

MCi 85 A Potain cranes. We are currently working on residential projects in Pune - Kumar Pinakin

and Kumar Prithvi, two 13- and 19-storey buildings. Potain builds quality cranes that require

little maintenance. These cranes save companies time and money and are fantastic for growing

companies like ours because the machines work so fast and efficiently. We can get more work done in a short amount of time.

Grove GMK6400 wins ESTA innovation award

The Grove GMK6400 has earned Manito-woc the “Innovation Manufacturer” award from the European Association of Abnor-mal Road Transport and Mobile Cranes.

ESTA represents crane users from across Europe and presents many awards relating to lifting and transportation projects, as well as the best new products in the industry.

The 400 t capacity GMK6400 is currently the strongest crane available on six axles. It features a unique range of design elements that set it apart from other cranes in this class.

The crane uses a single engine to power both the carrier and the superstructure. The solution involved several key elements, in-cluding the installation of a hydraulic motor in the superstructure in place of the tradi-

tional engine. The single engine concept delivered significant weight savings that Manitowoc’s engineers were able to reallo-cate to other parts of the design to further boost capacity.

Another design innovation was the crane’s MegaDrive, which gives the GMK6400 both traditional and hydrostatic drive ca-pabilities. The hydrostatic drive only func-tions when the crane is traveling at below 20 km/h. At speeds of over 20 km/h, Mega-Drive disengages and the crane moves using a traditional transmission. This innovation saved space in the crane’s design, further op-timizing the lifting capacity.

The final two design innovations were the self-rigging MegaWingLift and the Fuel Saver Option. The MegaWingLift, Grove’s patented tensioning system can increase

The biggest construction trade show in the world was a roaring success for Manitowoc this year at bauma in Munich, Germany.

Thousands made it to Manitowoc’s booth to see firsthand several new cranes from Manitowoc’s product lines including the MLC 165 Manitowoc crawler crane, the MD 610 tower crane, the Igo 36 and the Igo T 85 A self-erecting cranes, the MDT 248 topless crane, the GMK6400 all terrain crane, the GMK3060 all terrain crane, the RT770E rough terrain crane, and the Grove YB5520 industrial crane.

Manitowoc also welcomed customers and

staff to its customer appreciation dinner at the BMW museum in Munich. More than 800 people attended the event where President Eric Etchart addressed the group, thanking them for their contributions to the company.

Manitowoc was especially pleased to host several customers from India. Pictured on the right are Cheriyadth Pramod, Director of Gopalan Enterprises in Bangalore and Ilango Kathirvelu, managing director of Sai Earth Group, along with Ashwani Mattoo from Manitowoc. the capacity of the crane while the boom is working at a steep angle. In the past, such systems have required an auxiliary crane to install, which is a more involved process with longer rigging times. However, on the GMK6400, the self-rigging MegaWingLift can be fitted in just 20 minutes.

The GMK6400’s Fuel Saver option re-duces fuel consumption during idling, which in regular crane use can constitute up to 80 percent of running time. It reduces RPM while the machine is at rest and even-tually disconnects the pumps completely, shutting the engine down to save fuel. Restarting the power requires just a quick movement of any of the crane’s joysticks.

At bauma 2013, the GMK6400 was dis-played off the ground, allowing visitors to walk underneath the unique carrier.

On 27th August, Pune factory proudly completed 2 million work hours without a single incident of lost time in accident. It took over 700 days to reach this milestone. Manitowoc’s crane facility in Wis-consin is the only other plant that has achieved this record in the same month.

In a crane manufac-turing environment where hundreds of workers put up with tough challenges of moving, cutting and welding heavy steel items, any slip can be fatal. Safety does not happen by chance.

The Manitowoc Safety Management

System that the team is well trained to use, provides a reliable method to control and manage work place risk.

Among other safety processes, the workers in Pune also follow this easy to follow “3-step safety” plan:1. Avoid or eliminate unsafe conditions in your operating environment2. Minimize risk in any situation using SLAM (“S”top, “L”ook, “A”ssess, “M”anage)3. Always use PPE.

Two million safe hours

Crane Care safety training programme

Manitowoc Crane Care has been conducting safety training courses for tower crane customers in key cities in India. These courses were recently conducted with overwhelming response in Ahmedabad, Noida, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Chennai.

The training is free for all customers and reinforces the importance of safety on modern job sites. Customers who attended the safety train-ing included L&T ECC, Indiabulls, Leighton Infra, Sunshine, Wig brothers, Jaypee Greens, Laureate Buildwell, S.P.C.L, B.E. Billimo-ria, Aparna Constructions, Arab Tech, RSB Infra, RV advance, B.L. Gupta, Pratibha Industries and Gemini Equipment Rental.

Topics included foundation, erection kinematics, telescopic se-quence, tower crane operations, safety devices, precautions and safety while using wire ropes and periodical maintenance, and were followed by lively Q&A sessions. Training and Q&A sessions were organized by A.K Mishra, Manitowoc Crane Care Service supervisor; Ashok Singh, Manitowoc Crane Care service engineer; and Gurdeep Singh, Manitowoc Crane Care country manager.

Narinder Pal Singh, deputy general manager, technical at Laure-ate Buildwell Pvt. Ltd., who purchased four MCi 85s said, “Safety training is very much required because these days a helper can be-come a crane operator so he should know the basic safety factors and measures involved in operating the crane. The safety training program should be held once a month, as it can help us avoid ac-cidents on job sites.”

Shubham Agnihotri, senior engineer, technical service cell team for L&T ECC, North Zone, was full of praise for the safety train-ing courses. He said, “Every week we organize a 10-minute training session where we coach the operator, signal man and other workers on how to take safety measures to avoid accidents.”

The response was quite overwhelming and many customers are making requests for the safety training courses to be organized every month. There were also some requests for the training courses to include case studies and photos so the operators can better under-stand the topics.

The safety training courses conducted by Manitowoc Crane Care are getting overwhelming positive responses from customers.

Manitowoc Crane Care and Pune factory

Prashant Bahir, Senior EngineerWhat do you like most about your job?

I enjoy having direct interaction with our customers. When a customer buys a new crane or any new device he wants to know all the technical terms about the machine and I’m always happy to provide the information.

I also believe in providing practical training to our customers. Whenever I visit any site, I conduct safety training on the job site before climbing the crane. After climbing the crane safely, I teach everyone all about the safety measures involved during oper-ating the crane and how we can avoid accidents. An interesting experience

We successfully installed anti-collision devices for some of our key customers - L&T in Benga-luru, Sobha Developers in Ben-galuru and Leighton in Noida. I consider this as one of my biggest achievements because installing the anti-collision de-vice is a critical job and it was a learning experience for me as well as the customers.

Potain perfect solution for Indiabulls

Shri Dinesh Cranes, TIL and Manitowoc Cranes at the official handover of the second Grove GMK6300L in India.

Cranes on site

A combination of product quality, engineer-ing knowledge and customer support con-vinced Indiabulls Real Estate to purchase eight Potain cranes from Manitowoc.

Indiabulls needed a customised solution for three high-rise towers of a major residen-tial development taking shape in Mumbai. Because of restrictions on space, cost and time, Indiabulls needed to position the cranes internally to the structures, and the cranes were required to have 1.6m mast sec-tions that could fit in the elevator shafts.

The sales and engineering team from Manitowoc, including Amol Badgujar, re-gional sales manager for Potain; and Hans Olsson, key accounts and special projects director; worked closely with the design and planning team at Indiabulls to come up with a perfect solution.

The Manitowoc team proposed eight 10t capacity MC 205 B cranes to build the three high-rise towers and because of space limi-tations, Manitowoc proposed shorter 25m jibs. The team also designed a coordinated climbing plan for the course of construc-tion, synchronizing it with the placing of formwork and the completion of the build-ing cores.

Sumit Bhat, Assistant Vice President, Plant & Machin-ery, Indiabulls said, “With this project, we weren’t only buy-ing a product, we were buying a solu-tion. We looked at all the options available, and the plan from

added experience is what really helped with this project. Even when we were doing our load calculations and beam designs, we were constantly talking to Amol and Hans, and their feedback helped us establish the ideal structure for the buildings.”

The cranes spend approximately 50 per-cent of their time handling steel reinforce-ment and 40 percent lifting concrete form-work. The remaining 10 percent is spent placing concrete by bucket. Loads range between 2t and 2.5t.

Indiabulls Real Estate is one of the larg-est property companies in India whose de-velopments include premium office space, commercial complexes, high-end residential buildings, retail spaces, hotels and resorts.

Manitowoc Crane Care’s comprehensive support network

Manitowoc was the best. Their team under-stood our needs and helped us develop an optimized lift plan. In addition, Potain is a brand we know well, and the company has strong customer support from Manitowoc Crane Care, so we knew we were in very ca-pable hands.”

The three towers that make up the project are: the Sky Suites, a 75-storey tower using two MC 205 B cranes; the Sky Forest, an 80-storey tower using four MC 205 B cranes; and the Sky, a 65-storey tower using two MC 205 B cranes. All the cranes will even-tually reach working heights of 270m.

Added Mr Sumit, “We have extensive experience with Potain cranes, so we know the quality that comes with them, but the
