In response to an urgent request from the Greytown Gazette, the Department of Water Affairs, de- spite being given short notice to meet Monday’s deadline, respond- ed in detail pointing out the follow- ing: *The water supply operating rule for Lake Merthley, and the six boreholes which augment the sup- ply, is to use the Lake’s surface wa- ter resources when it is spilling. Once spilling stops, the dam water should be used conjunctively with groundwater from the boreholes. This is needed as requirements al- ready exceed the yield of the dam. *A drought operating rule was developed involving allocation to consumers based on volume of water to be drawn, without in- creasing risk of the dam running dry. *Although this rule was devel- oped to accommodate require- ments of up to 5.4ML per day, the dam is over allocated. These rules developed a de- mand of 4.4ML day, with full utili- sation of the boreholes. “Water restrictions should be implemented when the dam reaches 90% storage volume in or- der to protect the lake from long term failure.” The Lake is now at just 40% and no restrictions have been imple- mented. Under 15 Davids Midas league

PHOTO: SUPPLIEDOn 20 December, Black Dot community development ended the under 15 Davids Midas leagueat Ngome in the Bhambatha stadium. The prize winning team was ABC football club, secondwas BJ Stars and in third place was Wina Sambe. A big thank you to the Black Dot officialsponsors Midas Davids, Min Cash, SAB and Aquelle.

PORTULACAS blooming good nature hasafforded it some interesting names aroundtheworld -“TimeFuul”whichmeans“timeflower” inBangladesh,“NauBajiya”mean-ing“9o’clock flower” in Indiaand“Hoam igi ” meaning "ten o’clock flower" in Viet-nam.

Portulacas need sun - lots of it. In fact, the whole day long if possible.Luckily most gardens have those patcheswhere not much grows because it gets toomuch sun, and the soil is not terribly fertilebecause of the hammering it gets from theunrelenting rays. This is the perfect placefor Portulaca, and the once desert lookingpatch will turn into a fiery colour palettebefore you know it.

It’s quite simple. Just remember to avoidareas with shade or waterlogged soil anddon’t worry if the soil is not richwith nutri-ents because they’ll grow in sandy soilswith practically no attention. Being water-wise little plants, keep the water in the tapuntil it’sneededandtrynot topummel theirsoft leaves with hard overhead watering.

Plant up your Portulacas in rockeries,

hanging baskets, pots, between steppingstones and even as a ground cover if thatis what you need. Their eye-catching col-ours will make any of these areas impossi-ble to miss. They are available in scarlet, orange and yellow or white and pastelshades for a more understated feel.

There is no need to dead-head Portula-cas, but giving them a good haircut in latesummerwhen theyget leggywill affordyouanother blooming burst in autumn. For themost part, even though people find themeye-catching, luckily not many pests shareour view. If you find nematodes and aphidsseempartial to yourcrop, plantingacoupleof Marigolds as companions will act as anatural pest repellent.

An added feature, which not many peo-ple are aware of, is that they attract beesin their droves.Don’t get a fright if your flowers die afterthe bees have visited though because it’sperfectly natural for them to do so aboutan hour after pollination. - Supplied by theBedding Plant Growers Association.
