Proof that the many stories which have circulated over the past six years were rumours was the presence of President Jacob Zuma, and other dignato- ries, last Tuesday to undertake the traditional sod turning cer- emony. Prime mover, Philani Godfrey Mavundla, has been deter- mined to overcome any prob- lems in establishing this devel- opment which will lead to job creation and business invest- ment to the benefit of Umvoti. He had bought up the area covering 6 000 square metres and said that on completion of the project, more than R300- million will have been spent. He said that when Zuma had ad- dressed a meeting of farmers and business people in 2011 in Greytown, he had encouraged him to build the mall to make Greytown more vibrant and create jobs. The sod turning ceremony was the culmination of six years of hard work, Mavundla said, and on completion will drasti- cally change the rates base of Umvoti Municipality. Date for completion is No- vember 2014 so as to be ready in time for the December trade. Anchor tenants include Sho- prite Checkers, Jet, Edcon, Debonairs and Steers. In his speech, Zuma said “I am not here to campaign but to plead with investors to invest in Greytown.” He said that he was aware that they might not want to in- vest in such an initiative as it was 100% black owned, but it was necessary in order to en- sure the growth of the town and district. He also went on to say that black people needed to have a bank owned by them and also newspapers, so that “our sto- ries can be told.” A number of local business- men who attended the ceremo- ny said that it was a very posi- tive and encouraging move for the future growth of Greytown and surrounds. Politics did not feature in the speeches. Unfortunately, Agriculture and Environmental affairs MEC Mesack Radebe grabbed the Media headlines, pushing the mall development to the side by claiming that social grants had been increased “but there are people who are stealing them by voting for opposition parties.” An appeal was also made to ESKOM by Umvoti municipal manager Bongani Xulu to speed up the development of Umvoti’s electricity infrastructure to ensure that this project, and others had sufficient power. MANY moons ago,Greytown’s famousIrish poet Sean O’Kel-ly, after freezing in theearly morning, suffer-ing heat stroke atlunchtime and gettingtotally wet and hit onthe head with hail-stones on his wayhome, in betweensneezes, sniffles andthe shakes pennedthe following:“The weather in Um-voti’s crazy. At 10 am its bright;Eleven, hazy.By noon you’re bak-ing.At one, you’re so cold, your bones aching.

Come two, it poursso hard the county’sfloating.

Three you discardthe brolly you’ve beentoting.

Four, it’s still andcalm and balmy.

But winds at fivecould mobilize the ar-my.

Six brings a chill,impenetrable fog.

Yet seven showsstars to set the mindagog.

Eight and there’shail we’d never knownabout. At nine thereseems to be somesnow about.

Ten, and accompa-nied by thunder,

The lightning tearsthe skies asunder.

(Thank goodnessthat our weathermanat play

Has only four-and-twenty hours a day).”

THE Easter Bunny is a fantasy char-acter depicted as a rabbit bringingEaster eggs.

Originating among German Lu-therans, the Easter hare originallyplayed the role of a judge, evaluat-ing whether children were good ordisobedient at the start of the sea-son of Easter. The Easter Bunny issometimes depicted wearingclothes. In legend, he carries col-oured eggs in his basket, candy andsometimes also toys to the homesof children. The custom was firstmentioned in Georg Franck vonFranckenau’s De ovis paschalibus(about Easter Eggs) in 1682, refer-ring to a German tradition of anEaster hare bringing Easter Eggs forthe children.

In many church services on EasterSunday, a live rabbit representingthe Easter Bunny is brought into thecongregation, especially for the chil-dren’s message.

EASTER, in the Northern hemisphere, falls in the spring, the yearly time of re-newal when the earth renews itself aftera long, cold winter.

The word Easter comes from theNorsemen’s Eostur, Eastar, Ostara, andOstar, and the pagan goddess Eostre, allof which involve the season of the grow-ing sun and new birth. The Easter Bunnyreferred originally to a symbol of fertility, due to the rapid reproduction habits ofthe hare and rabbit.

The ancient Egyptians, Persians,Phoenicians, and Hindus all believed theworld began with an enormous egg, thusthe egg as a symbol of new life has beenaround for thousands of years. The par-ticulars may vary, but most culturesaround the world use the egg as a symbolof new life and rebirth.

A notation in the household accountsof King Edward I of England showed anexpenditure of 18 pence for 450 eggs tobe gold-leafed and coloured for Eastergifts.

A North African tribe, which wereChristian, have for many years had a cus-tom of colouring eggs at Easter.

Long hard winters often meant littlefood, and a fresh egg for Easter was quitea prize. Later, Christians abstained fromeating meat during the Lenten seasonprior to Easter. Easter was the firstchance to enjoy eggs and meat

after the long abstinence. Some European children go from

house to house begging for Easter eggs, much like Halloween trick-or-treaters.Called pace-egging, it comes from the oldword for Easter, Pasch.

Many old cultures also attributed theegg with great healing powers.

It is interesting to note that eggs playalmost no part in the Easter celebrationsof Mexico, South America, and AmericanIndian cultures. Egg-rolling contests area symbolic re-enactment of the rollingaway of the stone from Christ’stomb..

Easter...have a happy one!

IN an exciting development,Letcee (Little Elephant EarlyChildhood Development), anNGO working in rural commu-nities around Greytown, hasjust obtained their first Mobiletoy library.

Letcee operates a familybased,earlychildhooddevelop-ment programme, aimed at en-suring that children who areunable to access pre-schoolhave the chance for early learn-ing and stimulation throughplay.

Letcee has established fourpermanent toy libraries in ship-ping containers in Matimatolo,Eshane, Mbuba and Njenga-bantu.

These toy libraries are avail-able for children (and adults)within these communities, pro-viding a safe place to play In ad-dition, the toy libraries provideresources for those workingwith young children in thesecommunities, allowing them toexchange their play materialsonaregularbasis toprovideva-

riety.Unfortunately, some children

are unable to access these toylibraries as they live too faraway. This is why Letcee are soexcited about the mobile toy li-brary.

The fully kitted out truck, with a canopy, shelves and toys, will be able to access childrenin the more remote areas ofthese already very rural com-munities.

The children will be able toattend ‘come and play’ ses-

sions, giving them the chance toplaywithavarietyofeducation-al toys, learnthroughplay, meetother children and adults andmost importantly, have fun.

A big thank you to the Grin-drod Family Trust and Kia fortheir support in getting thetruck ready for action.

An early reminder that theannual Letcee Lilani walk/run,is planned for Sunday, 29 Junethisyear, toraise funds foraddi-tional stock for the toylibraries.

A SMALL competitive field of golfersplayed in the Tuta Carriers Club Champi-onships over the weekend.

From the onset, this championshippromised to be a two- horse race be-tween Merwin Rabe and Paul Els.

Barry Oehme, the defending champi-on, could not travel up to St Cathryn’sto defend his title.

It was so close - Paul dropped twoshots on the 17th and one on the 18th,then Merwin birdied the 18th to take theTuta Carriers club championship.

The Farmers Agri-Care Monthly Mugmade up part of the weekend golf, andwas played as the first round of the TutaCarriers Club Championship.

Geoff Newlands gave a few wordsabout his transport company during theprize-giving and handed over the prizes. On behalf of all our members, we wishTuta Carriers many loads full of timberand sugarcane, as well as a safe trans-port year.

The course was in a very good condi-

tion. Un-irrigated greens meant theywere fast, with one or two tight pin posi-tions receiving comments like “greenkeepers revenge.”

The greens were mowed five times lastweek to ‘assist’ with the green speed.

When the turf managers left aftertheir visit to St Cathryn’s on Tuesday, thegreenkeeping staff were motivated withthe comments and suggestions theywere given regarding course manage-ment.

There were 28 turf managers visitedand 19 played the course, giving theircomments. Turf managers from as far asMargate, Kokstad, Umdoni, Umhlali andVictoria country club were our visitors onthe day.
