The court heard that Dladla, on 20 February 2013, together with two cousins he named as Mxolisi and Scelo, robbed at gunpoint Field Security guard Isaac Ngcobo, who was based at Tuta Carriers, Kranskop. During Mr Ngcobo’s shift, he was held up at gunpoint and robbed of a bakkie and cash belonging to Geoffrey Newlands of Tuta Carriers. Newlands gave chase, using his tracker system on the stolen bakkie to track Dladla, who was apprehended as he tried to flee the scene. His two accomplices escaped and are still at large. State prosecutor Premie Naidoo managed to prove, via evidence led, that Dladla was one of the three who had robbed Ngcobo, who could not identify the robbers. However Dladla’s knowledge of the scene and various items found on him directly linked him to, and implicated him in, the robbery. He had previously worked as a guard at Tuta Carriers. Naidoo called for the 15 year minimum sen- tence to be invoked, arguing that there existed no substantial or compelling circumstances for the court to deviate from the mandatory mini- mum sentence. She argued that armed robberies are a plague that need to be removed from socie- ty. Armed robber gets 15 years FOR years and years, vehicles, pedestrians and animals have competed to cross the Tugela River at Tugela Ferry on the narrow single lane bridge. But better access is in the pipeline with the announce- ment on Saturday by President Zuma of a new R55 million bridge. At the sod turning cer- emony for the new bridge, the president said that this struc- ture would facilitate access for communities in Msinga. Department of Rural Devel- opment and Land Reform is in partnership with the KZN De- partment of Transport to build the 170 meter bridge. Preliminary designs have been completed. The R55 mil- lion cost includes R30 million for the construction of the bridge, with the access road and design costs estimated at R25 million. Among the many benefits will be the direct link to cross the river for the Mashunka and Ngubo communities allowing them easy access to medical and educational facilities. In all, as part of the Govern- ment's comprehensive Rural Development programme which is aimed at tackling un- employment, food security, poverty etc, the President an- nounced that R70 million would be spent on upgrades in Msinga to improve the quality of life, increasing access to ba- sic services and creating jobs and job opportunities. The Tugela Ferry Irrigation scheme consists of 728 hec- tares of irrigated land along the Tugela River - more than 1 000 small farmers have ben- efitted from the allocation of plots on which they grow vege- tables. This improves food se- curity and income with the surplus sold. First constructed over a hundred years ago, the Tugela Ferry Irrigation scheme was originally designed as a flood irrigation system, but has since been expanded. A total of R39-million has been made available towards the upgrading of this scheme for completion early next year. Studies by the Department of Economic Development have shown that goat produc- tion is one of the key activities in Msinga, with 69% of the households owning goats. To support the development of the economic aspects of goat farming, the construction of a permanent saleyard was pro- grammed - this has been com- pleted at the cost of R1.9-mil- lion and was handed over on Saturday to the Msinga Live- stock Association. In summing up these pro- jects, Zuma said that through the comprehensive rural de- velopment programme “we are beginning to see a trans- formation of the rural land- scape of our country and an improvement in the liveli- hoods of rural communities.” Millions to be spent in Msinga upgrades MUCH to the relief of farmers and gardeners, it actually rained in Octo- ber - but still more is required. WE children, and everyone’sinner child surely, naturallylove music, and so we calledour new theme “sound of mu-sic”. Whether the music is softand soothing, or a lively tune,we feel it both physically andemotionally. Through music,

we are learning to do newthings, moving our bodies inrhythm with the music.A ‘disco’ on Friday gave us thechance to dress up as a discogirl or boy and to learn themovements of the ‘Macarena’dance. What tremendous fun!

GREYTOWN Cluster Commander,Colonel DZKhumalo, has issued thefollowing statement on crimeawareness hints:

“There have been several reportsreceived by Col. DZ Khumalo fromacquaintances which, although asyet could not be associatedwith anyresultant crimes, there are things

which do not add up in their se-quence.

Prevention is better than becom-ing a victim of crime. More so whenthe same could have been prevent-ed.

Criminals are cunningandclever, stay vigilant and be ahead of theirstrategic moves.

Nicely dressed individuals some-times walk into your premises pre-tending to be employed by a certaincompany, and get busy conductingsurveys of a certain product usagesuch as cereals or cleaning deter-gents in your household. They will

start asking you questionswhich, atface value, may appear trivial andin between, will ask questions suchas:>> What kind of electrical appliances doyou use: laptop, TV, sound system etc?>> How many people stay in the house gender and age?>> Defence mechanism you have suchas alarm system? The question is what relationship dosome of these lines of questions have todo with product usage in the household?

They will then leave you with apromise that you stand a chance ofwinningaprize fromtheircompany,

whereas in actual fact you becomelisted in their list of houses to be tar-geted in house robberies, becausethey have all the information thatyou have unknowingly divulged tothem, ranging from valuable con-tents that you have in your house aswell as making it easy to devise astrategy to loot any person of valua-bles in the house. Here are some of the hints you mayadopt as precautionary measures:>> Make sure your gate stays closed andlocked>> Don't invite strangers into your houseunless absolutely certain about their

identity>> Note and report to the police themode of transport of suspicious individuals/people>> Domestic workers/children left aloneat home should be urged not to invitestrangers into premises>> Where in doubt about people lookingsuspiciouscalling at your house, do nothesitate to call the police, even in theirpresence, and make it known to themthat you intend to verify their authenticity. You will immediately notice their reac

tion whether they are at ease with thepolice coming into the picture.”

COOKIE catchers, caterpillars and folliclehandlebars make their appearance duringthe month of Movember, the month longgrow-a-moustache-for-charity challenge.

Over four billion rand has been raised inthemonthofMovember (previouslyNovem-ber) bymen throughout theworld not shav-ing above their upper lip - in other wordsgrowing a moustache of any shape or form.

This annual challenge is geared to savingand improving the lives of men affected byprostate cancer, testicular cancer andmen-tal health problems

At thebeginningof themonth, cleanshav-en men sign up to commit themselves tosprouting facial hair for the next 30 days.

Known asMoBros, they groom, trim, andwax their way into the annals of fine mous-tachery.Theybecome“walkingbillboards”,sparking conversation around the often ig-nored subject of men’s health and raisemoney for the Movember foundation.

Mo Bros are supported by the women intheir lives - known as Mo Sistas. Together, theyraisemoneyandanawarenessofmen'shealth.

TheMovembermovement started inAus-tralia in 2003 and has spread around theworld, withover fourmillionsupporting thismonth. To be a Mo Bro, certain rules apply. No joiningup themoustachewith sideburns- thats a beard - and no joining handlebarsunder the chin - thats a goatee..

NEW Guinea Impatiens are part ofthe genus “impatiens”. The impa-tiently explosive discharge of seedsat the onset of the right season, orwhen touched, is what inspiredtheir genus name but also gave riseto another common name, touch-me-not.New Guinea Impatiens were firstcollected in 1884 in Papua, NewGuinea.

As with most things in life, toomuch or too little of anything is notalways a good thing, andNewGuin-ea Impatiens adopt that approachwhen it comes to how much sun-shine they like to receive.Ideally they would like to be chosento fill the gaps in the garden that getboth sun and shade. They’ll grow infull sun but tend to crouch away

from the constant onslaught of di-rect rays, making it a small compactbush.Planting themindeeply shadyareas will have exactly the oppositeeffect as they stretch out in searchof the sun and often produce veryfew flowers.

From garden beds to hangingbaskets, window boxes and pots toedging or bordering beds and fillersbetween shrubs or under trees,theseplantsareathomefillingpret-tymuchanygapyou’vegot forthem.

Wait until all danger of frost has

passed and then plant your NewGuinea Impatiens in well compost-ed and well-draining soil.

Unlike many other annuals, theydon’t need the additional mainte-nance of deadheading but feel freeto cut them back after each flush offlowers to encourage more bloomsand strengthen the structure of theplant into a sturdier bush.- Supplied by the Bedding PlantGrowers Association.
