The Greytown Gazette re- quested comment from Umvoti Municipality as to what contin- gency plans are in place to sup- ply water to residents and busi- nesses in Greytown if the de- pressing prediction that Lake Merthley could dry up by July actually occurs. And if there is no rain this could happen. Surely it is way past time for Umvoti Municipality to ap- proach those residents with ex- pertise in such matters to form a water committee to safe- guard the daily activities of all by ensuring the continued sup- ply of that most vital commodity of all - water. RAIN has become such arare commodity but maybeone of these sayings fromtimes long gone could trig-ger off a downpour or two.

* The higher the cloudsthe better the weather.

* If the cat washes herface over her ear, theweather is sure to be fineand clear.

* When ants travel in astraight line expect rain;when they are scattered, expect fair.

* If cows lie down andrefuse to go to pasture, you

can expect a storm to blowup soon.

* When the dew is on thegrass, rain will never cometo pass

* When clouds appearlike rocks and towers, theearthwill bewashedby fre-quent showers.

* If birds fly low, then rainwe shall know.

* When the stars begin tohuddle the earth will soonbegin to puddle

*Whenarooster crowsatnight there will be rain bymorning.

* The moon and theweather may change to-gether, but a change of themoon will not change theweather.

* Evening red and morn-ing grey speed the travelleron his way. Evening greyandmorning red bring raindown upon his head.

* A ring around the sunor moon means rain orsnow coming soon.

* Red sky at morning, sailor takewarning; redskyat night, a sailor's delight.

When will it rain?

OVER the past few weeks, several deathsfromlightninghavebeenrecorded inKZN.But what should one do when those sum-mer rolls of thunder and flashes of light-ning occur?

Do your utmost not to be outside in anelectricalstorm- if so try toget intoabuild-ingoravehicle as soonaspossible, prefer-ably an enclosed metal sided vehicle - theback of a bakkie is a no.

Some weather experts recommend tocheck how quickly you should get out ofa storm - if the time between the lightningflash and corresponding thunder clap isless than 30 seconds, the storm is danger-ously close. But don't just stand therecounting - get inside!

The best place to be during a thunder-storm is insidea formal structurewith sol-id walls and roof. It is good if the buildinghas proper plumbing and electricity, as iflightning strikes directly the electricalcurrent will typically travel through thewiring and/or plumbing and then into theground. Avoid anything in the buildingconnected to the plumbing system (sinks, baths etc) or the electrical system (plugsockets, corded telephones, electrical ap-pliances).

Anymetal conductorexposed to theout-side could become a lightning conduit andtherefore must not be touched.

Do not watch lightning from open win-dows or doorways.

Stay insideuntilat least30minutesafterthe last clap of thunder.

If you are caught outdoors and cannotget indoors remember:

Lightning tends to strike the highest ob-ject in the area so stay away from isolatedtrees and telephone poles.

If you are in a forest, stay near a lowerstand of trees. Avoid wide open exposedareas, hilltops and rocky outcrops.

Stay away from water, wet items andmetal objects, such as fences, as they areexcellent conductors.

Makeyourself the smallest lowestpossi-ble target. This is best done by assumingthe “lightning position” - squat with youfeet together, tuck in your head and coveryour ears.

Don't huddle in a group - keep a coupleof body lengths between people. That wayif one person gets hit, there is less chanceof the charge spreading to the others.

If someone does get struck by lightning, call for emergency medical help and doCPR if the person has stopped breathing.Unlikesomeoneelectrocutedbyacontinu-ous current, someone struck by lightningcarries no electrical charge and can betouched.

CONSUMERSareadvisedtoborrow money responsiblyand wisely and only forwhat is strictly necessary. They should plan in ad-vance how they will repaythe loan and ascertainwhether they can afford it,says Mpho Ramapala, Act-ing Manager: Educationand Communication at Na-tional Credit Regulator(NCR).

The Credit Bureau Moni-tor has reported that, forthequarterendingSeptem-ber 2014, of the 22.50 mil-lion credit active consum-ers, 10.05 million (44.7%)have impaired records andare struggling to servicetheir debt.

Ramapala urges con-sumers to consider all theirexisting debt, includingstore and credit cards as

well as personalloans and other

commitments beforethey take out a new loan.“Plan to pay off as muchdebt as possible before tak-ingonmorecredit.Most im-portantly, honour yourcredit agreement repay-ments.”

Some tips to help con-sumersmanage their debtsmore responsibly into theyear:Borrow as little money aspossible. Borrowing tofund children’s educationor a home loan can be agood thing, but borrowingfor consumables, to pay offother debts or to fund luxu-ries such as holidays or de-signer clothing, can con-demn you to a lifetime ofdebt.Plan the repayments be-fore applying for a creditcard, store card, overdraft, personal loan or any form

ofcredit. Also take intocon-sideration the interest andother charges as well ashow this will affect yourability to save.If there is credit insurance, familiarise yourself withthe terms of the insuranceto avoid surprises whenyou most need the insur-ance.Be honest - make sure thatyouhonestlydiscloseall theinformation required bythecreditprovider.Dishon-esty may cause you to losethe protection offered bythe National Credit Act.Create a monthly budgetand stick to it - work outhowmuch incomeand totalexpenses are eachmonth. Also plan for unex-pected costs.Always keep receipts ofyour payments.Save some of your incomeevery month.Pay debts on time. Payinglate will adversely affectyour credit rating and pos-sibly yourability to takeoutcredit in the future. If youthink you cannotmeet yourmonthly installments, callyour credit provider imme-diately and try to re-ar-range payments. Do notwait until you skip pay-ments.Prioritise your home loan.

Borrow wisely to avoiddreaded debt trap

HOSPITALS, medicines, injections- all these can be quite terrifying, especially for our Little Oaks. That’swhy last Friday, ourkinder-garten went on an exciting fieldtrip to the GreytownHospital chil-dren’s ward, to de-mystify allthese fears. We learned thatwemight go to thehospital if we fall off our bike orbreak an arm and that, eventhough it might be a little scary togo to the hospital, doctors, nurses, and other hospital workers arethere to help us when we are sick.

We also learned that nurses arevery important - they provideround-the-clock patient care, givemedicine, draw blood and workclosely with doctors and familiesto keep everyone up to date on apatient’s condition.Wesangasong to the sick childrenand gave them crayons and draw-ing paper as presents to cheerthem

On Saturday, of course, it wasMudskipper time! The Spur Mudskipper Adventureis a big hit with all our Little Oaks,

who have loads of fun swimmingacross the pool (or being helpedacross the pool by our friendlyhigh school helpers), then franti-cally pulling on ‘tekkies’ andahel-metandhoppingonbicycles, tricy-cles or push-bikes for the second

part of the race, then running asfast as possible to cross the finishline. As is usually the case, the parentsare often even more competitivethan the children, and there is al-ways much excitement as moms,

dads, parentsand friendscheeronthe little ones.A big thank you to all who helpedin whatever way possible to makethis years’ Mudskipper and Mud-mand yet another day to remem-ber.

And they’re off! Mudskippers trustingtheir helpers as they tackle the swim.PHOTO: SUPPLIED

In the Shower•Put a bucket in the shower while you'rewaiting for the water to warm up, and usethe water you catch for watering plants, flushing the toilet or cleaning.•Install a low-flow shower head. Itmay costyou some money up front, but your waterconservation efforts will save you mon-ey...and water. Conventional shower headsflowat 19 litres perminute ormore,where-as low-flow shower heads typically flow athalf that (or less).•Spend less time in the shower. If you losetrack of time, bring a radio into the bath-room and time yourself by howmany songsplay while you're in there. Try to get yourshower timedowntoasinglesong (epic rockballads like Freebird don’t count!).•Turn off the water if you shave or brushyour teeth in the shower to save time.In the Bathtub•Think of baths as an occasional treat andstick to showers. The average bath uses 35to 50 gallons ofwater, whereas a 10-minuteshower with a low-flow shower head onlyuses 25 gallons. At the Sink•Turn off the water while you brush yourteeth and shave.•Fix those leaky faucets. That constant dripis more than just annoying, it’s also a hugewaste of water. You can lose more than 76lof water a day from a single drippy faucet.Toilets•Geta low-flowtoilet.Flushing is thebiggestwater hog in the house. Older, conventionaltoilets can use 19l per flush, but low-flowmodels use as little as 6l. Since the averageperson flushes five timesaday, the litres canreally add up.•If you can’t replace yourhigher volume toi-let, put a plastic bottle filled with water inyour toilet tank to reduce the amount ofwa-ter used per flush.•To check for a toilet leak, put dye or foodcoloring into the tank. If color appears inthebowlwithout flushing, there’sa leak thatshould be repaired.•“If it’s yellow, let itmellow.”Thesayingmaybe cliché, but it’s good advice. If you'regrossedoutbythe“yellow,” justputthetoiletlid down..
