UMVOTI Agricultural Society and the Um-voti FireProtectionAssociationarehostinga two day seminar by Dr Arnold Mol on 10and 11 June in Greytown, which will covermany aspects of management which willbe beneficial not only to farmers, but alsoto business owners/managers, teachersand couples.

The seminar in Greytown will focusmainly on agriculture, although numerousexamples fromcommerceand industryarealso used.

Farmers and businessmen throughoutthe world today admit that the problemsthatgive themthemosthasslesare thepeo-ple problems - subordinates who are notcompetent, labourerswhoarenotmotivat-ed, staff who are not dependable, and soon. Yet very few farmers have ever had for-mal training in themanagement of people.Agreatdeal of effort isput into their techni-cal training, but the skill to manage subor-dinates is regarded as something that ispicked up automatically.

The two-day seminar presented by DrArnoldMol isaimedatcorrecting thisprob-lem and covers topics like how to motivatelabourers and staff, how to set goals, howtomeasurework performance, how to del-egate responsibility, how to get subordi-

nates to think for themselves, how to exer-cise management controls, how to dealwith non-performers, how to reward effec-tively, and how to develop self-confidencein labourers and staff.

Numerous farmers and businessmenwho have attended his seminar have notonly benefited greatly, but have even de-scribed it as a life experience, because healso touches on aspects like themotivationof children, marriage enrichment, etc. There is a good deal of evidence that hismethods are effective, and have led to con-siderable increases in productivity.

Dr ArnoldMol hasmany years of experi-ence as a management consultant, andtaught for 16 years at the University ofSouth Africa where he held the position ofprofessor of business management. He isthe author of a number of books on man-agement and family life. He is currently inprivate practice as management consul-tant.

The cost of the seminar for two days isR1500. Please email [email protected] or phone 079 180 3539 be-fore Friday, 23May should you be interest-ed in attending, there are only five placeleft.

Dropping papers, packets, plasticbags, or other rubbish while walking,is also littering.

Grub in aMug SIR,

Today I had the misfortune ofhaving to go to the Home Affairsoffice in Voortrekker Street.

Firstly when one parks, youhave to go from your car into thestreet and jaywalk, due to thewhole width of the pavement be-ing takenupbya street vendorun-der a portable gazebo, table piledwith stock and even a generatorrunning a fridge.

One wonders where the trading

licenseandrelaxationofboundar-ies came from?

Secondly, and this is the excitingpart, as one approaches theHomeAffairs office, you slam into a wallofurinestench, sovile it takesyourbreath away.

Inside the offices, not only doyou have the stench permeatingfrom outside, but also the stenchof offices thathavenot seenamop, duster or detergent in years.

Every counter or shelf one

touches is sticky and visibly filthy.Thirdly, the staff need a few les-

sons in public (who pay their wag-es) relations. Now, lets take awalkdown to the Post Office.

Fresh, clean and staff who in-stantly smileandgreetandareon-ly too happy to go the extra mile.

Makes one wonder if these twoutilities belong to the same gov-ernment.

For obvious reasons, I remainanonymous.!

Big plus for PO minus for home affairs

SIR,The South African service and

the community policing forumwould likeyou, thecommunity, to:

1. Increase your co-operationand information to be one jumpaheadagainst crime for thesafetyof your family and your area.

2. Identify problems throughthe forumwith thepoliceandhelpthe police find solutions.

3. Involve yourself so that youcan have a better understandingof the problems that the policeface, who are working understressful circumstances and areunderstaffed. From personal ob-servation and my visit to the re-

spective department, I have no-ticed that the members, in spiteof being stressed, are performingtheir departmental duties to thebest of their abilities.

4. If youwantacrimefree town,

don’t hide behind your blinkersand resort to only criticising thepolice forum.

5. A word of consideration isthat with regards to the fightagainst crime, the community

must realise that crime cannot beconductedby thepolicealone, butwith greater community involve-ment.

6. The prerequisite element tothe success of the concept of com-munity policing forum is struc-tured consultation between thepoliceandroleplayers inthecom-munity

WITH the rising prevalence of breast can-cer, healthcare professionals must be ableto help patients with early detection andcare. But in South Africa, under-resourcednurses anddoctors are often overwhelmedand under-equipped to assist their pa-tients.

Dr Jenny Edge, a leading breast surgeonat Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospitalin Cape Town, set out to equip healthcareprofessionals working on the frontline.

She linked up with Professor DavidWoods, a retiredneonatologist and theedi-tor-in-chief of the Perinatal EducationPro-gramme (PEP), to bring out a self-study

book which would enable nurses to man-age a range of common breast conditions.

The book, ‘Breast Care’, has been re-leased by Bettercare. It covers the diagno-sis and management of common breastconditions in a concise and thorough Q&Aformat. Bettercare books provide self-powered continuing education for nurseswithout thecostsof coursesandworkshops

GAZETTESMALLSSomething for everyone

IT seems too good to be true -something that tastes as goodas dark chocolate can actuallybe good for you. Recent re-search shows the benefits arenot only to eat but for skin caretoo.

Researchhasshownthateat-ing chocolate and natural co-coa may improve vascularhealth, blood pressure, cogni-tive health, blood flow, and skinhealthWhat's more, two table-spoonsofnatural cocoacontainmore antioxidants than fourcups of green tea, one cup ofblueberriesoraglassandahalfof red wine. According to ex-perts, compounds found in thecocoa bean, called flavanols, increase blood flow. Andhealthy blood flow means bet-ter circulation, which means ahealthier skin andappearance.

Some studies have shownthat cocoa may even reversesmoking-related impairmentsof blood vessel function.

Researchers say the highestbenefitsare found indarkchoc-olate which contains 90% ormore cocoa. Though this maytaste a bit bitter, the benefitsarealso found inchocolatewith60% cocoa.

But what about wearingchocolate on your face? Morebeauty salons are touting thebenefits of chocolate as a skincare treatment and chocolateface-masksarebecomingmorepopular.

One dermatologist, and au-thor of Feed Your Face, warnsagainst pre-packaged facemasks however, and advisesyou make your own chocolateface mask.

All you need is dark cocoapowder and plain yogurt to un-clog the pores. Combine two tothree tablespoons of dark co-coa powder with two to threetablespoons of plain yogurt tomake a paste. Apply to clean, dry skin, and let it sit for 10 to15 minutes before rinsing withlukewarm water. If you havedry skin, consider adding a tea-spoon of honey or a tablespoonof mashed avocado - both in-gredients help lock in moistureand keep skin hydrated.

The journal, Chemistry Cen-tral Journal, has shown thatchocolate is a “rich source ofantioxidants and containsmore polyphenols and fla-vanols than fruit juice.” Re-searchers found the amount of

antioxidants perserving, of bothdark chocolate andcocoa, had a great-er antioxidant ca-pacity and a great-er total flavanoland polyphenolcontent than fruitjuices. Chocolatealso includes cocoabutter which con-tains oleic acid, amono-unsaturatedfat that gives oliveoil its goodname. Italso containsstearicacid,asatu-rated fat, but onewhich doesn'traise cholesterollevels. It is high intryptophan, phe-nylalanine, and ty-rosine, all nitro-gen-rich com-pounds consideredthe ‘buildingblocks’ of all thebody's proteins.Twoof these aminoacids are precur-sors of adrenaline,a stress hormone, and dopamine, aneurotransmitterthat relays signalsbetween nervecells in the brain.Theobromine andcaffeine fall intothis groupof chem-icals and are re-sponsible for somerather different ef-fects on the bodywhen certain peo-ple eat chocolate, such as a fasterheartbeat andheartburn. -www.health24.co.za

A LOVING HOME THATREFLECTS SOUTH AFRICANDIVERSITYConsider adoption as an option.South Africa is a country with 11 official languages, hundreds of cultural groups and numerous recognisedreligions. Every day, families everywhere are mixing upthese ingredients to create this multi-wonderful nation thatwe know and love.

If you are thinking of adoption, have you consideredadopting a child from a different race or culture? Childrenare just children, no matter their biological background, and all children need a loving home.

Start your journey today by learning the facts withAdd-option, South Africa’s first national adoptionresource centre.

“There is a big difference between the idea of cross-culturaladoption, and actually taking a little boy or girl into yourhome. We didn’t adopt an idea, we adopted Jenna! Andfrom the first moment she has been the love of our lives, exactly the same as a proud mom and dad would reach outfor their biological baby at the hospital. The only differenceis that she wasn’t born from our womb, but from our hearts.”
