GRAPEVINE
On 1 September 2005 Karsten UK officially opened its doors – a small office
with 2 rented tables, 2 telephones, a printer (that was still used by Emma
and Charleen recently!) and a coffee machine. The subsequent 10 years
have been challenging, but very rewarding … for which we can only be grate-
ful.
A week end of celebrations is planned for the August Bank Holiday this year
– more details will be communicated over the next few weeks:
Saturday evening, 29 August – a formal function in St Ives (Cambridgeshire)
for senior staff and invited guests (customers, suppliers and service providers
that supported Karsten UK over the last 10 years)
Monday afternoon, 31 August – a family day in Spalding for all staff and
their families

Appointments
Newgro Alvarado Koopman has been appointed as Stock Control Clerk at Newgro from 1 May 2015. He obtained his National Diploma in Internal Audit from the Cape Peninsula University for Technolo-gy. Alvarado previously worked at Aveng Moolmans in Kathu.
Karsten Western Cape Pieter Vorster has been appointed from 1 May 2015 as a Pur-chaser for the Western Cape companies. Pieter previously worked at Citrusdal Cellars. We would like to welcome these personnel and trust that they will enjoy a happy and long working relationship with the Karsten Group.

Blouputs Huibré Smit, Production Clerk has resigned with her last day of service 29 May 2015. Huibré was employed since 14 July 2014. Karsten Western Cape Partnership Tharia van Tonder, Senior Financial Clerk has resigned with her last day of service 29 May 2015. Tharia was employed since 1 July 2012. Altus van Lill, Junior Production Manager has resigned with his last day of service 29 May 2015. Altus was employed since 1 November 2013. We would like to thank these personnel for their contributions and services rendered and we wish them prosperity and suc-cess in their new careers.

Roepersfontein Marlize Grové was transferred from the position of Junior Credi-tors Clerk to the position of Reception/Switchboard on 1 May 2015.
Promotions
Klein Pella Melkim Bock has been promoted from Senior Production Fore-man to Junior Production Manager from 1 May 2015 after ob-taining the National Diploma in Farm Management. Blouputs Herman Vermeulen, apprentice, has successfully passed his trade test and has been promoted to the position of Electrician from 1 May 2015. We would like to congratulate these two young men with their promotions and we trust that they will grab the challenges associated with the new positions with the same diligence and dedication as in the past. Die ontwikkeling van ‘n meer professionele beeld
Of jy nou daarvan hou of nie, elkeen van ons het ‘n openbare beeld, en as jy dit nie doelbewus ontwikkel nie, sal daar, in die afwesigheid daarvan, vir jou een geskep word. Die regte roete om dus te volg is om te verseker dat die beeld wat jy uitstraal ‘n aanwins is, en nie ‘n las nie. Die begrip van watter beeld jy verteenwoordig, en hoe om dit te verbeter, is makliker gesê as gedaan. Die voorstelle wat hier volg is daarop gemik om jou persoonlike beeld te versterk, en daardeur, ‘n positiewe invloed te hê op hoe ander mense jou ervaar. Onthou altyd dat dit is eerste indrukke wat mense bybly, grootliks omdat mense se persepsies nie maklik verander word nie, en ook omdat jy voortdurend dieselfde beeld sal projekteer. Hoe jy lyk, en wat dit oordra, vorm alles deel van jou optrede. Kom tot die besef dat hoe jy lyk, ook ‘n invloed het op jou werk, asook hoe ander mense dit insien. Fokus daarop om geloof-waardig en opreg op te tree, en om nie kunsmatig te wees nie.
Weet watter beeld jy wil uitstraal
Watter persoonlike beeld wil jy projekteer? Wil jy mense beïndruk as ‘n kreatiewe, energieryke, innoverende en gees-driftige leier? Of as ‘n kalm, wat-moet-gebeur-kan-maar-gebeur, doeltreffende bestuurder? Of as ‘n sensitiewe, bedagsame mens-persoon? Ander mense evalueer die seine wat jy uitstuur, en daarom moet jy die beeld wat jy wil on-twikkel, analiseer, sodat jou seine wel by die beeld sal pas.
Gee aandag aan jou persoonlike voorkoms
Klee jouself toepaslik, so asof jy alreeds die toppunt van jou sukses leer bereik het. Dra die tipe klere wat, jy meen, sal vol-doen aan wat ander mense sal verwag ‘n suksesvolle bestu-urder sal aanhê. Stel vir jou ‘n lys op van jou persoonlike drag vereistes, en evalueer jouself daarteen om te bepaal of jy daaraan voldoen.
Wees ‘n positiewe kommunikeerder
Wat jy sê, en hoe jy dit sê, is belangrike faktore in die opbou van jou beeld. ‘n Praktiese oefening is om ‘n opname te maak van jouself gedurende ‘n gesprek, en dan om die volume, toonhoogte, toon, artikulasie en spoed van jou stem te ontleed. Die opname kan die volgende foute vir jou uitwys:
Of jou stemtoon vervelig en eentonig is.
Of jy te binnemonds, en onduidelik, praat.
Of jou stem te hoog en skril is.
Oor gebruik van Um, Ah en Jy weet.
Al bogenoemde kan bydrae tot ‘n negatiewe persoonlike beeld. Werk daaraan om ‘n goeie luisteraar te wees, terwyl jy ook verseker dat jou werknemers en kollegas opdatum gehou word oor wat in jou departement aangaan. Kombineer die vaardigheid om net soveel te luister, as wat jyself praat, en maak van jou mondelingse en geskrewe kommunikasie ‘n positiewe ervaring.
Gee aandag aan jou nie-verbale boodskappe
Jou liggaamstaal kan jou kanse, om ‘n suksesvolle bestuurder te wees, belemmer. As jy vol selfvertroue is, dan moet jou lig-gaamstaal dit weerspieël. Jou liggaamshouding, en gedrag, onthul baie oor die persoon se innerlike gemoedstoestand. Vergelyk iemand wat met ‘n regop houding en selfvertroue loop, met iemand wat met geboë skouers, en ‘n onsekere voorkoms, aangeloop kom.
Ontwikkel daardie essensiële vaardighede
Hou die volgende ingedagte wanneer met ander persone in kontak gekom word:
Groet eerste. Jou handgreep moet ferm wees, sonder om te hard te druk.
Jou groet moet opreg en betekenisvol wees.
‘n Vriendelike glimlag bevorder die beeld van vertroue.
Gebruik die ander persoon se naam gedurende die gesprek.
Doen huiswerk voor jy die persoon ontmoet. Maak jou kennis van die persoon deel van die gesprek.
Wys dat jy geïnteresseerd is in wat die ander persoon sê.
Pas die basiese reëls van hoflikheid en etiket toe.
Evalueer jou werksomgewing
Die netheid van jou kantoor, of werksplek, sê baie oor jou. ‘n Deurmekaar tafel byvoorbeeld, kan ander laat dink dat jy onnet, en ongeorganiseerd, is. Besoekers word beïndruk deur werksdokumente wat netjies op mekaar geplaas is.
Projekteer ‘n professionele houding te alle tye
Maak seker dat jou naam, te alle tye, gekoppel kan word aan eerlikheid en etiese gedrag. Werk daaraan om goeie, persoon-like verhoudinge op te bou. Openbaar integriteit, begrip, sen-sitiwiteit, vertroue, respek en bevoegdheid. Lig jou mede-kollegas in dat jy ambisieus is, maar moet nie die indruk wek dat jy bereid is om ander te benadeel, net om die ambisies te vervul nie. Gebruik takt om jou vaardighede, en prestasies, te openbaar. Erken jou foute, en moet nooit, in die openbaar, ‘n kollega of meerdere kritiseer nie. Gebruik elke geleentheid om te bewys dat jy ‘n uitstekende spanlid is.
Wees te alle tye bewus van jou beeld
Die sleutel tot ‘n suksesvolle opbou van jou persoonlike beeld, is om vroeg te begin. Dit is makliker om ‘n positiewe beeld op te bou, voordat een, in die oë van ander gevorm is, as om een te verander wat alreeds gevestig is. Ongelukkig is dit ook so dat min mense die geleentheid het om met ‘n skoon lei te begin. As jy egter vermoed dat jou huidige beeld nie die bevordering van jou loopbaan aanhelp nie, dan sal jy ve-randeringe moet aanbring. Hierdie veranderinge kan ook tyd vat, want ‘n goed gevestigde gedrags partroon is moeilik om oornag te verander. Wees bewus daarvan dat die manier hoe jy jouself oordra aan ander, is een van die belangrikste fasette van ‘n bestuurder. Daar moet daagliks daaraan gewerk word. Samevattend kan gesê word dat jy altyd soos ‘n professionele persoon moet optree, en ook moet lyk of jy in die rol tuishoort.

NAMPO TOER 2015
Kromhout en Koekoeb het die jaar
besluit om die jaarlikse Nampo uitstalling
te gaan bywoon buite Bothaville. Met
groot opgewondenheid het die toergroep
hier vertrek na die koue Vrystaat. Hulle
kon nie wag om die groot Nampo park
met die groot trekkers en die groot bulle
te sien nie en dan praat ons nie eers van
die groot planne wat die manne maak by
die boere patente afdeling nie.
Ten spyte daarvan dat hulle Nampo baie leersaam en interessant gevind het was almal se
hoogte punt die besoek aan die leeu plaas. Dis darem nie elke dag dat jy die geleentheid kry
om so na aan koning leeu te kom dat jy sy tande kan tel nie of om „n welpie vas te hou nie.
Hulle was ook bevoorreg om wit leeus te sien. Daarna het hulle „n vinnige draai gemaak by
„n grondboontjie fabriek en darem gesien hoe lyk Parys ook. In die aande was daar gesellig
om die vuur gekuier en gebraai waar die dag se stories uitgeruil was.

Onder die indruk dat sy „n vergadering moes bywoon het Thea Bekker, met haar gewone breë glimlag, niks ver-
moedend ingestap by haar afskeid. Ten spyte van die koel winters windjie om ons blaaie, was die atmosfeer hartlik.
Die lekker warm koffie en heerlike ontbyt het ons sommer gou laat vergeet van die koue en almal het gesellig ver-
keer om die tafel.
Dit is nie altyd maklik om van „n geliefde kollega afskeid te neem nie, maar ons moes vir Thea Bekker groet en be-
dank vir al haar insette, ondersteuning en liefde deur die jare as ons Betaalrol administrateur. Sy het „n impak op ons
almal se lewens gemaak maand na maand na maand. Thea ons hoop die nuwe hoofstuk van aftrede wat jy nou betree
bring nuwe moontlikhede oor jou pad waarvoor jy voorheen nie tyd gehad het nie. Dankie vir alles en bly deel van
ons lewens.

Die twee dieselvakleerlinge van Roepersfontein Meganies, Francois Scheepers en Sean Malgas, oppad om op die bus te klim, van Upington na Pretoria, om hul Blok 1-opleiding by PREMOS te gaan deurloop. Tydperk van opleiding is van 28 April 2015 tot 17 Julie 2015.

Blouputs Grapevine
The month of May is usually the start of our winter, but still we wait for the cold to arrive. So far no hot
soup nights or hot chocolate in front of the fire has happened for us.
Since the holiday everyone has been very busy. We have capital blocks that needs to be finished, we had
the Citrus harvest. Starting 1st of June Stofbakkies will have a new Production Manager.
In the beginning of May we had to say goodbye to colleagues.
Greeting great friends and colleagues of Stofbakkies:
Emile and Leighan joined us last year August, and although their stay
at Karsten was short, we have a life time of memories. Those two peo-
ple made a definite difference in our lives. Circumstances made that
they had to move back to their family farm, but will never be forgotten
in Blouputs. We wish them all of the best for the future!
Middle May Mario Denton visited us. Over a 2 day period he gave us something to chew on. You’re
strengths and not you’re weaknesses. It was helpful in many ways and I sincerely hope that each and every
one walked away with a newer brighter look on friends and colleagues. Friday evening we got together for
a braai to get to know each other better and also to greet another colleague Huibre. Huibre also joined us
last year August, due to her husband that got a promotion they will be leaving us in Blouputs. We also wish
her all of the best for the future. From now on if there is a position open for August my proposal would be
to appoint them in September.

twice during May. What a privilege it is to be able to help so many
people who rarely get the opportunity to taste fresh fruit!

It is with great pleasure to announce that Hoogland now have its own Clinic
and Computer Centre. The opening event took place on 07 May 2015 and was
well attended by our own Oom Piet Karsten, Senior Management and Hoo-
gland employees. A well deservingly tap on the back for the Creche Personnel
responsible for organising this great event. I also wants to take this opportunity
to thank the Western Cape Management Team for established these facilities
for the benefit of our Community.

early with a few Training Programmes.
Training were conducted between 22 May and
27 May 2015 at Hoogland and was facilitated by
the Northern Cape’s Veronica van Schalkwyk.

Karsten Pome Fruit Partnership-Gouda in co-
operation with the Waitrose Foundation are
currently running a Training Programme
(Packing & Grading) for the youth and
unemployed of Gouda. The Programme will run
for approximately 4 weeks. This is the first time
a programme like this is presented to
unemployed youth.

Develop the leader within Learners play a vital part in the future of their school. To empower them for this important role as
leaders, Karsten Albert Heijn staff facilitated training for thirty four learners from Boesmanland
High. Through experiential learning activities learners could discover and develop the leaders that
are within them. Rather than listening to speeches regarding working together, learners had to
practice co-operation and apply leadership skills.

Karsten/Albert Heijn computer facilitators received Sisanzani training at the Vodacom
centre. More than only knowledge regarding Microsoft Word and Excel were gained.
Exciting practical skills were learned like designing a logo, drawing maps, writing a news-
letter and managing money. Computer facilitators are empowered to send the message
to the community: “Here I am” to encourage, to share computer skills and to build a
better future… to change lives for the better.
