Global warming is anincrease in the averagetemperature of Earth'ssurface. Since the late

1800's, the global averagetemperature has increasedabout 0.7 to 1.4 degrees F(0.4 to 0.8 degrees C). Many

experts estimate that theaverage temperature will risean additional 2.5 to 10.4degrees F (1.4 to 5.8 degreesC) by 2100. That rate of

increase would be much

How Global Warming Works

Fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural

gas)

 arbon Dioxide

(CO2)

 reenhouse gases

The Sun’s energy

passes through the

car’s windshield.

This energy (heat)

is trapped inside

the car and cannot

pass back throughthe windshield,

causing the inside

of the car to warm

up.

Example Example of the

Greenhouse Effect

Some scientists have suggested that when the earth was new (about4.5 billion years ago), CO2 may have made up as much as 80% of the

earth's atmosphere. About 2 billion years ago, the concentration of CO2

was likely 20 or 30%. Human life and even most life could not havesurvived in such an atmosphere. With the evolution of photosynthesizing plants, the concentration of CO2 dropped and the

percentage of oxygen in the atmosphere increased.

Remember that in photosynthesis:Remember that in photosynthesis:

In addition, when plants and animals die, the dead organisms decayand give off CO2.

Solutions

Simple solution

×Reduce greenhouse gases emission

Stop dependency on fossil fuels

×Renewable energy

→Solar energy, wind energy andbiomass energy

Green areas×Plant more trees
