“American Moonshot” This summer marks the 50th anniversary of arguably the greatest scientific accomplishment in history: the night of July 20, 1969, when Americans Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the surface of the moon. The story of America’s quest to the moon is told in a fasci-nating new book by Rice University historian Douglas Brin-kley: American Moonshot: John F. Kennedy and the Great Space Race. When Kennedy took office, America was cautiously experi-menting with rocketry and space exploration. With the Russians’ successful launch of Sputnik in 1957, space exploration took on a new urgency. In a speech to Congress, the new President made this astonishing commitment: “I believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before the decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth.” Despite the ambitious goal, neither a policy nor an agency existed to realize it. But, as Brinkley writes, President Kennedy marshalled the resources and talent from the civilian, military, corporate and educational sectors to “leapfrog” the early Rus-sian achievements and take the lead in the “space race.” For Kennedy, going to the moon was about winning, about beating our Russian Cold-War adversaries — but it was about more. At Rice University, President Kennedy spoke of his vision of Ameri-ca’s space program as the noblest illustration of the American pioneer spirit, a journey that would open not only new frontiers but new technologies in communications, medicine and trans-portation: among other things, we can thank Project Apollo for our cell phones and cordless appliances and tools, for our cars’ radial tires and the laser technology that make many surgical procedures possible. “We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things,” President Kennedy said at Rice, “not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because the goal will serve to organize and measure our best energies and skills, because the challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win.” In his brief Presidency, John F. Kennedy articulated a vi-sion for America’s great space adventure that harnessed the imagination and talents of our nation as never before. The night before his death, at supper with the Twelve, Jesus articulates a similar vision: a church brought together to realize his vision of the Kingdom of God, a vision centered in the conviction that, in God, we belong to one another, a vision that lifts up and honors the gifts that each one of us brings to this table. In his “high priestly prayer,” Jesus prays that the extraordinary sense of love that binds the Father to the Son will bind us to one another — and so bound in that life, we may real-ize God’s vision that can transform our world in the extraordinary peace and limitless mercy of God.

High School seniors! Baccalaureate Mass this Sunday, June

2nd at the 9:15 Liturgy. We will celebrate with a light brunch following Mass for the Seniors & their families.

Father, They Are Your Gift To Me – In the creation story we are told that God made human beings “in His image.” This doesn’t mean that we are exact clones or identical twins of God, but rather that each of us, in light of our unique gifts and charac-teristics, are created to reflect the vibrant life and loving face of God to others. God’s hand in our lives doesn’t end in creating us. Throughout our lives God gives us purpose and fills us with the gifts we need to fulfill that purpose. The challenge for us is to know ourselves as God knows us, as his gifts in the world to share his light and life with others. Through prayer and in humility we are invited to see clearly God’s will for our lives and all he has provided for us so that his will and our lives may be complete. God has-n’t randomly or thoughtlessly placed us in this world to create a reality for ourselves. He has sent us into the world with a specific task in mind that we might love others and build up his kingdom in the Church, making it ever more Alive! Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

Dear Parishioners: Congratulations and God’s blessings to all of the graduates of our Parishes - certainly our High School graduates but also, grade school, col-lege even Kindergarten. Milestones and accomplishments like graduations are important moments to see where God has been and where we are being led next. Whatever changes or new beginnings happen in our life, God will always be there to meet us. Right now, everyone thinks of our grade school as St. Peter and Paul’s School. Eventually the school will belong to everyone and, I hope, will be used by more families. I wanted to share with you the impression that a grandfather and new volunteer has of the school: “Over the past seven months I have been involved in helping at Saints Peter and Paul School in various activities. I have been most pleased in what I have seen. As a parishioner and former teacher, I want you to know what an excellent school we have. The teachers not only provide excel-lent academic instruction, but incorporate the teachings and beliefs of our Catholic faith. Each child is expected to reach his full potential. With our faith as a foundation, the mutual respect between faculty and students, and the exhibition of good manners, the loving bond between students and faculty is displayed on a daily basis. All of these attributes contribute to academic excellence. I encourage you to consider an education at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School for your children or grandchildren. Take the time to go on line, pick up a school brochure, or visit the school to learn of the benefits for you. The Church will remain alive through our youth.” Sincerely, John Wolbert

I know a lot of you have great devotion to St. Anthony of Padua. A wonderful relic of St. Anthony will be in the Pittsburgh area from June 6-9. You can find all the opportunities in the Pittsburgh Catholic or on the Diocesan web page but here are opportunities that are closer to home:

Friday, June 7 – St. John the Baptist, Monaca – 5:00 p.m. until Mass at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, June 8 – St. Alphonsous, Wexford – 9-11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 8 – St. Alexis, Wexford – 1:00 p.m. until the Vigil Mass at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, June 9 – St. James, Sewickley – their Masses are 8 and 11 a.m. so approximately 9:00 to 10:30 a.m.

I met these great folks a year or so ago in South Carolina. They and the relic were a nice experience. Next Sunday, June 9, is Pentecost Sunday and the Birthday of the Church. Maybe you all do this already, but a fun thing to do is for everyone

to wear red along with the priests. Fr. Bob

Baptism is a major event. To understand the seri-ous responsibilities of both parents and godparents, there will be Pre-Baptism Sessions on June 2, & July 7, at 2 PM in the Religious Ed Center. To register or for more in-fo, please call Gary or Tina Grimm at 724-495-2385.

REMEMBER YOUR LOVED ONES AT MASS Each parishioner can request three Masses (Two Sun-

day dates and one weekday) for a donation of $10 each. You can also have Masses celebrated at any of our grouping churches; but there will be a wait list to record your intentions and church of choice to be in-

cluded on a first come, first served basis. What better way to remember your departed loved ones—

than at Mass.

WOW!!!

We have a grand total of $1937.57 that was collected in

the “Sacrifice Jars.” The generosity of the parish for

these two worthy causes is nothing but astounding! Both the Men’s Shelter and the Backpack

program at Rochester Elementary school will be able to benefit because of your Lenten Sacrifices.

Thank You!

If you own securities or real estate that you no longer need or wish to sell, a gift of these assets can benefit us without impacting your cash flow. You may also benefit from capital gains tax avoidance by giving rather than selling these assets.

Tangible Personal Property

If you have valuable assets such as artwork, collectibles, jewelry, etc., that you no longer want or need, consider giving these assets to us and benefit from an income tax deduction this year.

Life Estate

If you own your home and wish to remain living there, you can transfer your home (farm or vacation home) to us while retaining the right to use the home during your lifetime. Enjoy the added benefit of an income tax deduction!
