The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process by which adults are received into the Catholic Church. The focus

of the RCIA program is to instruct adults on the beliefs and teachings of the Catholic Church, while at the same time fur-

thering the spiritual development of the candidate and catechu-mens.

Adults who are either not Catholic or who were baptized Cath-olic but not catechized as children are welcome to RCIA to learn more about the Catholic faith. After several months of friendly, informational sessions, participants may elect to pre-pare for and finalize initiation into the Catholic Church. Con-tact Fr. Get that hug into gear, Dad…! It was bedtime for six-year-old Maria. Her dad was in the den hard at work at the comput-er, finishing a report due the next day. After a few minutes, he realized Maria was standing next to him. “Honey, what do you need?” “It’s bedtime, Daddy. I came to say good night.” Still keeping one eye on the screen, he gave Maria a big hug and a kiss. “Good night, Sweet Pea. Sleep tight. I love you. Now off to bed,” Dad said, and returned to his computer screen. A few minutes later he looked up and there was his daughter still standing there. “Honey, I gave you the hug and kiss. What do you want now?” Little Maria said, “Daddy, you gave me the hug and kiss, but you weren’t in it.” If we claim to be among his disciples, then Jesus demands that we be “in it.” We cannot be passive about our faith; just calling ourselves Christian does not automatically make us one of Jesus’ own. Discipleship demands a constant awareness of God’s presence in our lives; disci-pleship compels us to seek the things of God in all things. Baptism is not just a simple ritual or milestone: it is to be transformed in the spirit of Christ the suffering, humble Servant of God and to pay the price for living that spirit. Baptism is to take on a faith that becomes part of the very fabric of our lives, to embrace an identity in which God and the things of God become both our life’s journey and destination. Today’s feast of Jesus’ baptism challenges us to renew our baptismal vow to declare—in every decision we make, in everything we do—that we are disci-

With the welcome addition to our community of Rochester. Freedom and New Brighton in an already large service area, our team needs your help. There are people in our communi-ties who are facing crises in their lives and need our assis-tance. They do not have to be Catholic or members of our par-ishes to obtain assistance. So, we need more volunteers! There are 3 levels of volunteers: Active—Catholic, regularly
