Young ducks and geese have up to 5kgs of corn mush forced down their throats through a long metal pipe each day for 2 to 3 weeks until they can barely move and they are on the verge of organ rupture and death. This is the only form of husbandry that purposefully raises animals to become diseased and deformed. Force feeding causes duck and geese livers to swell up to 10 times their normal weight in a matter of weeks inducing liver disease that causes the liver to push against other organs. This unnatural weight results in breathing and standing difficulties. Because their legs splay outwards as a consequence they try to stabilise themselves with their wings. $135/180g + Torture + Grotesque Suffering = Pate De Foie Gras

PATE DE FOIE GRAS – FATTY AND DISEASED LIVER

Cruelty so extreme that the production of pate de foie gras has been effectively banned in 14 countries and California.

Foie Gras is fatty and diseased liver • Nearly all birds used for the foie gras industry exist in an environment of dark, filthy sheds where

they cannot socialise, swim, fly or groom.• They are debilled – a mutilation causing chronic pain performed to stop stress related behaviour

such as pecking each other. • They are restrained in cages so they cannot escape force feeding done with a metal pipe plunged

down their throats. This produces bruising and tearing and it is not uncommon for the plunger to puncture their throats.

• Mortality rates in foie gras farms are high caused by neck punctures, stomachs literally bursting from enormous volumes of food and massive internal bacterial and fungi growths.

• Countries that have banned the cruel production of foie gras – Italy, Israel, Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Luxembourg, Norway and Poland. Countries whose laws have been interpreted to ban the force feeding of animals for foie gras include Holland, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and in August 2005 the California State Assembly passed a ban on the force feeding of birds for the production of pate de foie gras.

• The judgment in the Supreme court case in Israel in 2003 against foie gras found that “there is no real controversy with respect to the fact that the practice of force feeding causes suffering to the geese.” Pope Benedict XV1 said recently “…so that geese are fed in such a way as to produce as large a liver as possible, or hens live so packed together that they become just caricatures of birds, this degrading of living creatures to a commodity seems to me in fact to contradict the relationship of mutuality that comes across in the Bible.”

* Please advise restaurateurs and outlets selling duck and geese Pate De Foie Gras that they are selling diseased organs with a terrible history of cruelty behind them – the price for this “gourmet delicacy” is too great
