Rejoice in the Lord!

Dear Friends in Christ,

“And renew a right spirit with me!”

As we continue our Lenten adventure this month, I am excited about some special things coming up:

1. Holy Communion instruction for our 5th graders and some older youth. It’s always a joy for me to spend this time with these young people, getting to know them, and experienc-ing their inquisitive minds about spiritual things.

2. Our missionaries are coming! Scott & Vicki Satre plan to be with us on Sunday, March 6, to share about their life and work in Bible Translation in Cameroon. (That’s in Afri-ca.) They are with the Wycliffe® Bible Translators organi-zation. In addition, Scott grew up here in Albert Lea, and his siblings, Sue (& Jim) Larson and Bill (& Ann) Satre are members here in FLC.

3. Good Friday worship service. Our plan for Friday, March 25, is to have the message given by seven of our fellow FLC members, based on the seven last words of Christ from the cross (1–"Father, forgive them, for they do not know what

they do." 2–"Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise." 3–"Woman, this is your son." "This is your mother." 4–“My God, my God,

why have you forsaken me?” 5–“I thirst.”6–"It is finished;” & 7–

“Father, into your hands I commend my spirit." ) These statements spoken by Jesus as He suffered and was sacrificed for our sins have captured the imaginations of believers for centu-ries, and we will be blessed by what our fellow church members have to share. It’s at 7:00 pm.

4. The 33 Series for Men. Beginning Monday evening, March 21, all the men of the community are invited to gather to grow in Biblical manhood. The “33” comes from the 33 years that Jesus spent in this life. This 7 week series is sponsored by our “Az-One” men’s ministry and is sure to be a blessing to all who participate... and their families.

5. Resurrection (Easter) Sunday! What more need I write?

It is such a privilege to be gathered in community as God’s people. May this Lenten season help you to grow personally in faith and maturity in our Lord as He ‘renews a right Spirit in you’! See you in church!

In the light of His love, Pastor John F. Holt

Some affirmations that can help “Renew a Right Spirit with-in Me” any time, as I seek to live out my calling as a stew-ard of God’s blessings in my life: 1. God calls me to express my Christian identity through

everything I do – including the time I spend at work. 2. I am never alone as I go about my work. God is with me

and God's people are available to support me. 3. My normal, everyday actions serve God and others.

They contribute to the good of God's world. Through them, God is at work.

4. Despite my best efforts, I sometimes fail. I make foolish and counterproductive decisions. Because of God's grace, there is forgiveness and the promise of a new be-ginning.

5. There are frequent opportunities each day to live out God’s grace towards others in the way I treat them.

Dear Lord, Help me to live out Your grace in the way I inter-act in my daily life—in my caring, giving, struggles, joys—so that I can truly be a blessing to all; through Christ. Amen.

The FLC Associate Pastor Call Committee continued to meet in

February. Together, the committee did a careful review and final

edit of the Ministry Site Profile and the Associate Pastor Job De-

scription. These documents were then presented to the FLC Church

Council for review, and they were approved at their regular meeting

on February 15. The next day the Ministry Site Profile was submit-

ted electronically through the ELCA process. It has been reviewed

and approved by the Southeastern Minnesota Synod office, and we

expect it soon to be posted for potential candidates to see.

Now the Call Committee is waiting for the Synod assistant to the

Bishop to schedule a meeting with us. At our next meeting we plan

to begin to develop questions to use for interviewing any candidates

as they become available. Currently, the committee has no candi-

dates in the works, but have ideas of a name or two.

The Call Committee continues to request that the congregation:

1. Keep us individually and as a whole in your prayers.

2. Share your suggestions for potential candidates along with con-

tact information. These can be forwarded to any Call Commit-

tee member or to Pastor John Holt in the church office.

3. Speak well of Fir st Lutheran Church and the committee.

Those serving on the Call Committee are: Allen Christensen,

Belinda Krysan, Dean Jensen, Jens Levisen, Jill Johnson, Joe

LaFrance (chair) and Matt Larson. Advisory members ex-officio are

Chad Adams and Pastor John Holt. Youth advisors are Luke John-

son and Garret Larson, and a couple more to be recruited.

May the Lord direct our steps together. Soli Deo Gloria!

MUSICAL NOTES MUSICAL NOTES (cont.) No matter our circumstances or how lonely, isolated, or rejected we may sometimes feel, we are never alone in Christ. On the last Sunday of Lent, March 13th, our Choir is singing a powerful and beautiful Anthem based on the old Spiritual "JESUS WALKED THAT LONESOME VALLEY". The first part of that Anthem says: "Jesus walked that lonesome valley, He had to walk it by himself. O, nobody else could walk it for Him; He had to walk it by himself." Jesus walked the path of torture, humiliation, and death--so we would not have to! He indeed walked that painful path--by himself. It was God's plan that Jesus would "walk that lonesome valley" so that we could have Salvation through His death and resurrection. It was a beautiful Sacrifice on our behalf. We have nothing to fear in life or in death when we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior. WE ARE NEVER ALONE! "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil--for you are with me!" Psalm 23:4 We are coming into such a beautiful time of the year. My prayer is that you have truly felt renewal through our Lenten Adventure, Services, and other experiences. Now, we will take those final steps to the Cross with Jesus as we near Holy Week. They may have tortured and killed our Lord, but death was not his goal--not his destiny--not God's Plan! His powerful resurrection and our accepting of Jesus as the Savior He truly is, opens our door to Eternal Life--Life in Christ--Eternity in His Eternal Light--NEVER, NEVER ALONE FOR THE AGES! RAYS OF LIGHT CHILDREN’S CHOIR (K-3rd Grade)--Meet on Wednes-days from 3:30 to 4:15 PM--snacks are provided. SOUNDS OF JOY CHILDREN'S CHOIR (4th grade through 8th grade) Meet on Wednesdays from 4:15 –5:15 PM--Snacks are provided. ****If your child (Children) need transportation to choir, please call Tim O'Shields at the church for details on bus connections through Southwest Middle School. We do not want any children kept from participating due to transportation issues! We will work them out the best way possible! Bus 343 DEPARTS SOUTHWEST MIDDLE SCHOOL AND MAKES A DROP AT 301 W. HAVE YOU INCLUDED FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH IN YOUR WILL?

Over the years, those First Lutheran Church members who have conscientiously included First Lutheran Church congregation in their estate planning have enabled some very important and power-ful ministry to happen here. Please consider including First Luther-an Church, which has served you these many years, in your estate planning. You will enable this congregation to serve many, many more people in years and generations to come.

The American Legion Post 56 helps our youth activity programs with a financial

donation with their Post breakfasts. The fourth Sunday of each month the American Le-

gion Post 56 hosts a breakfast serving 8 am-12:30 pm. For each congrega-

tional member that comes to breakfast on that day the American Legion Post 56 will donate $1.00 back

to our youth group.
