“We believe God is calling us to invite people into a deeper relationship with Christ, that
all may discover true peace and be prepared to follow him in compassionate service”
NOTER FRA PRESTEN Norwegian for “Notes from the Pastor”
Giving thanks; living daily in gratitude to God
October 31st is a traditional day for Lutheran’s to celebrate their heritage. The name
of our church comes from Dr. Martin Luther, a German priest and pastor who lived 500
years ago. He wrote the Small Catechism, a small booklet that Dr. Luther intended for
parents to use for instructing their children in the Christian faith. He used the format of short
questions and answers to explain the Apostles’ Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, the Ten Command-
ments, etc. Here is what he wrote concerning the line from the Lord’s Prayer, “Give us this
day our daily bread.”
What does this mean?
God gives daily bread, even without our prayer, to all people, though sinful, but we ask
in this prayer that he will help us to realize this and to receive our daily bread with
thanks.
What is meant by “daily bread”?
Daily bread includes everything needed for this life, such as food and clothing, home
and property, work and income, a devoted family, an orderly community, good
government, favorable weather, peace and health, a good name, and true friends and
neighbors.
Martin Luther reminds us that everything needed for this life is a gift from God. We
can’t create any of it. We might think, well I or my parents work hard for our living, it is not
a gift. It is true that hard work can have its rewards, but even so it is all a gift from God. Our
minds and our bodies are all gifts from God. The ability to work, the farm, the company, all
the stuff we call ours, is all gift. We can’t create any of it. We can improve it. We can take
care of it. We can share it. But in the end, everything needed for this life, “daily bread,” is
given to us by God. When we pray, “Give us this day our daily bread,” we are praying for
God to give us an attitude of gratitude. Receiving our daily bread with thanks, knowing that
everything we call ours always belongs and always will belong to God, puts a different mind
-set to our day. If it is all God’s, if our very lives belong to God, what does it mean to let
God be the director, the guide, the one we always consult during the thousands of decisions
we make with our lives. We are stewards of our lives and of these things we call ours for a
very short period of time.
We live in a culture that is based on a very different set of values and standards.
What Dr. Luther has to say sounds very similar to Paul’s words in Colossians 3:17, “Giving
thanks to God in everything we do.” May thanksgiving not just be a holiday for us, but a
way of life. Dr. Luther tells us to begin by recognizing that God gives us everything we need
for daily life, even without our prayer, to all people.
Shalom! May all be well with you!
Pastor Dennis

About Love INC of Douglas County In 2008, Love In the Name of Christ (Love INC) began its volunteer based Christian ministry in
Douglas County. The mission of Love INC is to mobilize local churches to transform lives and communities In the Name of Christ. Shalom Lutheran, along with 31 other churches in the county, have agreed to unite and support this mission by praying, volunteering beyond their church walls and giving financially. Valued volunteers are able to reach out as disciples or to be “mobilized” to those in need, with the ultimate goal of people connected to or reconnected to Christ for the real transformation to occur. Love INC provides a clearinghouse (office) to hear the stories of those in need and to verify situations. As Love INC knows the resources our community provides, along with church ministries, one church alone does not have to face the complex needs of someone dealing with poverty. As the Body of Christ, we can show the love of Jesus and bring hope to people who feel hopeless. Recently, Love INC began a transformational ministry program mobilizing 17 area churches to offer classes in finances, healthy boundaries and goal setting for our neighbors in need to become more self-sustaining and grow closer to the Lord.
THANKSGIVING EVE, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 6:30 PM
Shalom will be joining with Bethesda, Calvary, and First Lutheran
Churches as well as St. Mary’s Catholic Church for an Ecumenical
Service at St. Mary’s. This is a wonderful opportunity for the community
to come together in Praise and Thanks to God for the many blessings we
receive.
There will be an opportunity to sing with a combined choir. Talk to Ruth
for more information.
NEEDS: We need people to help with the following tasks for this evening:

ADVENT – A time of preparation for the celebration of the arrival of the Savior of the World.
Mid-week Advent Suppers and Worship will be Dec. 5, 12, and 19.
*We are looking for 3 groups of people (families, committee, groups) who would
be willing to host each of these suppers. There is a signup sheet in the Fellowship
Hall. Please include name of group, a contact person, and your menu plan. Supper
is served between 5:30 and 6:15 pm with an average attendance of 60-80 people.
*Worship will be at 6:30 pm and will again feature “Holden Evening Prayer”. If
you would like to be a part of worship leadership for these worship services
(reader, singer, etc.) please talk with Ruth.
In gratitude, let’s share our bounty with our neighbors
who have difficulty putting food on the table.
Sustained healthy nutrition helps students excel,
promotes family harmony & adds to the well being of
neighborhoods. Let’s share our thankful hearts by
providing groceries for those in need. Food gifts can be
put in the Narthex grocery cart. Thank you for your
generosity.
“God’s Work, Our Hands” Team

(C2C) Connect to Celebrate Events
(for adults unless otherwise noted)
“The Best Christmas Pageant Ever”. In this hilarious Christmas tale, a
couple struggling to put on a church Christmas pageant is faced with cast-
ing the Herdman kids - probably the most inventively awful kids in history.
You won't believe the mayhem - and the fun - when the Herdmans collide
with the Christmas story head on!
“The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” will be showing at the Andria Theatre
and is our next Connect to Celebrate – Shalom Family Event. Shalom has a
block of 40 tickets reserved for our Shalom families on Sunday, December
16th at 2:00 PM. Tickets are $14/adult or student and $10/K-5th Grade
Child. To reserve our spot, we must sign up and pay by Friday, November
9th. Put check to “Andria Theatre” in envelope in Tam Bukowski’s mailbox at Shalom.
We are looking for people to help us coordinate each of these events. If you would like to help, talk with Tam Bukow-
ski or Ruth Blom. Let’s keep the fun going!
BREAD
GOD’S WORK OUR HANDS emphasized with a BREAD FOR THE WORLD
SUNDAY the importance of contacting our Senators and Representatives
encouraging them to support the Senate version of the 2018 Farm Bill. The
Senate version supports the bipartisan work requirements established in 1996.
The House Bill increases those requirements which could mean that 1.2 million
SNAP recipients could lose their benefits because they would be unable to comply with the new provisions. The
reconciliation process remains deadlocked.
Well, we responded. We wrote 59 letters! BFW and our committee thank you for exercising our Christian and
Civic privilege and responsibility.
