Beachfronttakes strain>> People said there were fewer people and less activity than last year

SETON THOMPSON>>[email protected]

TWOthirdsof thewaythroughtheApril holiday season, the Feverfound that words like “quieter”,

“disappointed” and”concerned” wereheard fromlocalsandvisitorswhohadthe opportunity to compare thisyear’s Scottburgh beachfront pavilionwith the equivalent period last year.

Most of those who commented saidthey felt there were fewer people andless activity than in 2013.

Asked why that should be, theyagreed that it could not be theweatherand while acknowledging that theholiday structure this yearmade com-parisons difficult, they expressed dis-appointment at the lack of servicesavailable and concern that it mightherald a long-term decline.

Effectively, only the beach shop re-mains fromlastyearbecausewhile theWimpy is still there, everybody knowsit is facing an eviction order.

However, theabsenceofFatBoyzorany replacement of it is seen asthe greatest concern to visitors andlocals.

In the meantime, a group claimingto represent theUmdoni community islooking to lodge complaints with thePublic Protector against the UmdoniMunicipality and its protectionservices, in particular in respect offailures to enforce municipal by-lawsand regulations on the beachfront.

FREEDOM Day, celebrated on Sunday, 27April, commemorates the first democraticelections in South Africa since 1994.

“How far have we really come in thisjourneyof20years?Areweallexperiencingthe dream of so many, long-deprived by sofew,or is itonlyachangein face?Dowe, likeamodern-day Babel, remain divided alonglanguage and race? Do we remember thetrue meaning that this day symbolises?Freedom—to treatandbe treatedequal[ly]— every man, woman and child, withoutdiscrimination?” Cllr André Beetge asks.

Freedom Day serves as a reminder thattheguaranteeof our freedomrequiresus toremain vigilant against corruption and theerosionofthevaluesof freedomandtobuildanactivecommunitythatwillworktowardswiping out the legacy of racism, inequalityand the promotion of the rights embodiedin our constitution.

Freedom should mean emancipationfrom poverty, unemployment, racism, sex-ism and other forms of discrimination. Weare 20 years into our new democracy andmanyoftheseissuesarestillrifeinourcoun-try. We now face new challenges, like the

growing inequality among South Africansand political and economic instabilitycaused by new elite who are interested inpursuing their own interests.

According to AfriForum’s Chris Fourie, minorities are increasingly withdrawingfrom public debate and actions.

“Some have ‘immigrated’ inwardly inthe sense that they continue to live in SouthAfrica, but concentrate only on their owneconomic survival, mentally isolated fromtheircommunities.Othersphysically immi-grate to other countries.

“Thiswithdrawalhasresultedinminori-ties losing their public voice, as it were. Anabsent voice, or an inaudible one, is obvi-ously simply ignored in decision-makingprocesses.

“The current absence of the voice of mi-norities does not only hold negative conse-quences for the minorities themselves, butfor the country as a whole.

“It has become important forminoritiesto develop a new charter, in terms of whichthey can reclaim their voice andplay a con-structive role in public life and public de-bate.We knowno other home. This right toa meaningful existence extends to all com-munitiesandwewanttoco-operateinseek-ing a better future for all,” Fourie says.

Long weekends and holidayssee an influx of people headingto the coast. Thousands of vehi-cles were recorded passing the

Mooi River and Mariannhill tollplazas, as holidaymakers maketheir way in and out of the prov-ince.

Thenumberofroadaccidentsalso increases during this busyperiod. With this in mind, Netcare911 offers this safety advice.

A slower travelling speedgives you more time to react in anemergency situation and alsodecreases the stopping distance.According to Arrive Alive the ma-jority of collisions are precededby a transgression or transgres-sions of the rules of the road ie.speeding, reckless driving, over-

taking on solid lines etc. Speed-ing and alcohol abuse result intragedies. Pedestrians shouldwear light-coloured clothing andwalk on the side of the road fac-ing oncoming traffic and onlycross the road at designated pe-destrian crossings.

Motorists should increasetheir following distance, travel ata safe and appropriate speedand switch their vehicles headlights on to make themselvesmore visible to other road users.

Have your vehicle checked bya professional to ensure that it isin a roadworthy condition and re-

member to ensure that your firstaid kit is fully stocked - replaceold or damaged safety glovesand safely dispose of expiredointments/medications.

Motorists are reminded that along journey should begin thenight before with a good night’srest and no or low alcohol con-sumption. Stopping for regularbreaks along the route also helpsto prevent driver fatigue.
