A FIRE consumed a two-roomshack in Extension 2 ofBohlokong in Bethlehem a fewhours after the two people wholived there had left for work.On Thursday morning the

shack was burnt to the groundand the inhabitants are still inshock.Lehlohonolo Hlongwane (42)

is deeply troubled. He was usingthe shack for his panel beatingbusiness and at the time ofthe fire all his equipment wasinside.He said he had lost everything

in the fire.The seats of some cars that he

had been working on were insideas well.“I hope the car owners under-

stand. I really don’t know whatto do at the moment.“I’m just thankful for caring

neighbours who saved some ofthe cars that would also havebeen damaged,” he said.Paulos Nkomo, Hlongwane’s

business partner, noticed thefire while waiting for Hlong-wane.“Nkomo called me and told me

my house was on fire.“I could not believe it and

came running but by the timeI arrived, everything was gone,”he said.The house belonged to his

friend who was now in Bloemfon-tein with his family and Hlong-wane added that he had beenusing the shack to run hisbusiness.“Two people live there, but had

left for work before the firestarted.”Nkomo said he had heard a

sound from another room beforehe kicked down the door to see

what it was.“When I opened the door I saw

the flames.“I tried to put out the fire, but

I failed,” he said.The fire was eventually extin-

guished by the Dihlabeng LocalMunicipality’s fire brigade.Mafube Mofokeng, ward 19

councillor, told Express EasternFree State that the municipalitywould offer assistance before theend of the week.“We’ll hold a meeting to

determine how we can helpthose people, because we knowthey’ve lost everything,” hesaid.

PHILIMON MALOKE (50)has ended his life with agunshot after he had shotand wounded MakapaMapote (50) and her daugh-ter Maletsema (24) at theirhome at Zone 7, Meqeleng,near Ficksburg.This happened on Friday,

18 April. Makapa andMaletsema are both in acritical condition in thePelonomi Hospital inBloemfontein after theywere transferred from theDihlabeng Hospital inBethlehem.It is alleged that on that

Friday night, Maloke hadarrived at Mapote’s homewhere he had a fight withher. He took out a pistoland shot her several times.She sustained wounds in thestomach, wrist and rightthigh. He also shot at thedaughter and wounded herin the mouth and the head.Maloke then allegedly shot

himself in the head and diedon the scene.Capt. Phumelelo Dlamini,

the police communicationofficer from Ficksburg, said:“We are investigatingattempted murder casesregarding the two womenand an inquest case into thedeath of Maloke.”

Hard work pays for new school hall} Tladi Moloi

TATE MAKGOE, the Free StateMEC for Education, officiallyopened the R6,5 million hall at theMohaladitwe Secondary School inMakwane Village, Qwaqwa, onMonday.The hall came as a reward after

the school had surprised many byobtaining a 100% matric pass ratein 2012, an improvement from the20,4% of 2011.Mohaladitwe became the second

school to receive a hall after theirneighbour, the Rantsane Second-ary School.At the handing-over ceremony

James Dlamini, the principal ofthe school, told those attendingthey had decided to name the newhall after the MEC.“Makgoe raised the school from

the ashes and we felt we shoulddo something for him that wouldnever be forgotten.“We asked him for a hall and

he said they would build it if wecould obtain a 100% pass rate,and we did. We are happy thattoday we can celebrate the resultof his promise,” he said.Dlamini said they had also

received a media centre andscience laboratory.“We don’t want to ask for

anything, but we want to rewardthe MEC. We know that he lovesPhysical Science and Mathematicsand we are going to make surethat we give him excellent resultsin those two subjects,” he said.The capacity of the hall is 1 200

and Dlamini said that would helpthem in the effective managementof examinations and that it wouldbe a convenient facility for indoor

activities.Makgoe said the school had

worked hard and that theydeserved better.“I am proud of this school.

After obtaining a disappointing20,4%, they promised they would

work hard and improve, and theydid just that,” he said.He said the learners should be

proud of themselves.“It is time that we change the

future of black children. Gone arethe days when one thought taking

your child to a private schoolwould make them clever. Ourschools are now better thanbefore,” he said.Makgoe said he would like to

thank the teachers of Mohaladit-we for the support they had

shown the learners.“I was very happy to hear one

of the learners saying that theirteachers loved them. It shows thekind of a relationship between theteachers and their learners,” heconcluded.

wife, Marlene, on the same day.The couple survived the attack

and were later admitted to ahospital in Bethlehem withserious injuries.Warren was allegedly stabbed

husband with serious injuries tohospital,” he said.He said the motive behind the

the Free State MEC for EconomicDevelopment, Tourism andEnvironmental Affairs, con-demned in the strongest terms thesenseless, barbaric and brutalkilling over the Easter weekend.The MEC sent his condolences

to the family of the deceased, andwished Brian and Marlene aspeedy recovery.“This tragic incident has

unnecessarily blemished thetourism and hospitality industryin the Free State.“I commend the police for the

good work they did in apprehend-ing the suspect.“It is every Free Stater’s

SOUTH AFRICA will hold its fifthdemocratic national and provincialelections on 7 May.The 2014 national elections hold a

special significance as South Africansborn after the first democratic electionsin 1994 are eligible to vote for the firsttime.The Independent Electoral Commission

(IEC) stressed that everyone involved inthe elections, including all registeredpolitical parties and candidates, wereexpected to abide by the Electoral Codeof Conduct. The purpose of the code is topromote free and fair elections, includ-ing the political tolerance, free cam-paigning and open public debate.The IEC announced that there are

22 263 voting districts and stations, andapproximately 212 000 electoral staffmembers were recruited and are beingtrained for the election.Just over 26 000 South Africans have

successfully applied to vote abroad, 29political parties will contest the electionto the National Assembly and there were196 registered political parties (nationaland provincial) as on 6 March.The cut-off date for appeals against

decisions of the IEC was on 10 April; 15April was the cut-off date for decidingappeals and notifying parties by theElectoral Court, while yesterday certifi-cates were issued to candidates on thefinal list of candidates.Voting overseasSouth African citizens residing outside

the country and who are registered to

vote will also have an opportunity to casttheir ballot on 30 April. They can vote atany of South Africa’s 124 embassies, highcommissions or consulates-general locatedin 108 countries.On 5 and 6 May special votes will be cast.On election day 117 home affairs offices

THE Setsing Plaza and the South AfricanPolice Service (SAPS) in Phuthaditjhabarecently launched the Community PolicingForum (CPF) in the Setsing ManagementOffice.According to Portia Mbhele, the SAPS

sector commander, the launch was aimedat bringing services to the people.“Our duty is to protect the community.

The primary task of the CPF is to turn theSetsing Plaza into a crime-free zone. Theforum comprises hawkers in the centre.The forum members will be identified sothat criminals cannot pretend to be forummembers,” she said.When asked where the CPF would be

based and if there was a chance of them

reopening the satellite station to helppeople with cases and issues like affidavitsand certification of documents, she said:“We are in the process of re-opening theSAPS satellite office.“We were told by the management of the

centre that we might have the office in sixmonths.”Phillip Ngozo, the Setsing Plaza centre

manager, expressed his appreciationtowards the initiative.“I am very happy with this initiative.

This centre has become a crime hot spot.We have received numerous claimsincluding shoplifting, pick-pocketing, rape,illegal gambling, assault and publicdrinking. Because the police are notvisible, offenders are left to walk thestreets freely,” said Ngozo.

THE Tiisetsang Secondary School Choir wasthe overall winner of the South AfricanSchools Choral Eistefodd (SASCE) atmunicipal level in the Dihlabeng Municipali-ty. The school from Bohlokong, Bethlehem,went unchallenged, winning the competitionat the municipal stage in nine categorieswith the Ipokelleng Secondary School fromClarens coming second.This means these two schools have

secured a licence to participate in the ThaboMofutsanyana District finals where they willcompete against other winners from munici-

palities from the provincial finals. Thecompetitors will be from Maluti-a-Phofung,Dihlabeng, Setsoto, Nketoane and Phumelela.The district competitions are set to take

of the mayoral committee (MMC) forLocal Economic Development andTourism, the event was aimed at launch-ing the Dipontsho Show.He said they had seen it fit as the

municipality to bring back Dipontsho forthe locals.“We know that we used to have this

kind of event in the 1980s.

“We want to bring it back so that ouryoung people can learn from it. We’llkeep everyone entertained until theend,” he said.Azael Nhlapho, the acting executive

SUPERSPORT FC are thechampions of the inauguralDihlabeng Easter Tournament.The championship trophy

was bestowed on them afterthey narrowly defeated Papil-lion, a team from Fouriesburg,by 1-0 in the final that tookplace at the Bohlokong Stadiumon Sunday afternoon.An early goal from Makgoba-

lo Mokoena was enough toearn the Bethlehem side R4 000in prize money and a trophy.They also received gold medalsand soccer kit.Papillion was the better team

in the second stanza, but couldnot penetrate the rock-solidSuperSport defence as theysuffered an early goal setback.However, they went home

with R2 500, silver medals andsoccer kit for losing in thefinals.The two teams advanced to

the final stage of the tourna-ment after they had defeatedMighty Gunners and MautseFC respectively.SuperSport hammered

Gunners 4-1 while Papillionbeat Mautse 2-0.The tournament started off

winning coach, said he was

happy with his team’s perform-ance. He said the competitionwas very tight and that waswhy they found themselvesbattling towards the dyingminutes of the game.“The boys knew what was at

stake. They fought against thebest on the day. We havegained a lot from the tourna-ment and we hope to take thisperformance to the league,” hesaid.Pokane Pokane, the Papillion
