FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME
A Faculty Development Program (FDP) is designed to:
enhance teaching and research skills of faculties; make them aware about modern teaching tools and research methodologies; acquire knowledge about current technological developments and application of different
statistical and software tools in teaching and research; achieve competitive teaching, learning and research environment; and to facilitate career development by enhancing academic proficiency and competence
Through this FDP, approx 50 faculty members of AICTE approved Institutes shall be trained for a duration of a
maximum of two weeks at a time.

Technical field of Proposal: Research Methods and Applications of Statistical Tools and Techniques
Title of Proposal: “FDP on Research Methodology – Developing the Collective
Competence”`
Abstract
The quality and value addition of the education system in any country largely depends on the academic
and professional qualifications, knowledge, skills, attitudes, and professional knowledge and
competencies of the faculty deployed for creating and disseminating knowledge at different levels of
education in the system. Undoubtedly in higher and professional education institutions, operating either
by the State or private higher education providers; faculty, the prime mover in the education system,

(A Statutory body under Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India)
needs to regularly upgrade their academic and professional qualifications, subject matter knowledge and
the core competencies so as to improve the quality of their teaching as well as the research work.
For the growth and development of any academic institution, continuous research work and that too of
high quality, in the various domains of its operations has become a bare minimum necessity, if the
institute has to keep its neck high among its contemporaries and compete nationally and globally. The
faculty, therefore, should have fairly good knowledge of various research methodologies and
statistical tools/techniques/software for analyzing data, interpreting inferences, and drawing results
and findings. Such research knowledge reservoir is expected to be available with the faculty for
carrying out their own research work for their professional growth and satisfaction, and also to guide
and help students in carrying out their minor research projects as required under the prescribed course
curriculum of the university.
In general, research has primarily been seen as an academic activity conducted only by the academic
professionals. However, it is not always a concept that is used only by the practitioners, managers and
policy makers. Further, it has also been observed that very often this academic activity is carried out
by the academicians in their labs. but in isolation. Therefore, a wide gap exists between the
academicians and practitioners in understanding the genesis and the usefulness of particular research
work. This prevailing scenario leads to a somewhat mismatch between those who create the evidence
base and those who are positioned to implement the research findings at the field level. Educational
institutions, therefore, not only supply skilled human resources to various sectors of our economy, but
must contribute even in intangible ways i.e. by producing quality applied research addressing directly
the contemporary and emerging business issues, nationally and globally.
Being inquisitor by nature, academicians and professionals are always learning, discovering things,
analyzing information, and finding ways and means to improve the problem solving capacities and
capabilities of the organizations with their well proven scientific alternatives, which are in tune with
the emerging needs of the society. These entire set of endeavors with sharp focus on finding facts/truth
constitutes research. Since in any academic environment, teaching and research are always
complementary and supplementary to each other, therefore teaching also involves substantial amount
of creative thinking and experimentation. In this context the whole set of questions may include: does
a teacher’s conduct and behaviour lead to improved academic performance, increase in motivation

level, sincere commitment, and the better behavior among students? Does conduct of teachers in and
outside the classrooms amounts to improvements or otherwise in students’ performance? However,
research is envisaged to be a more formal and systematic method to improve students’ performance.
Since by profession, teachers in general are thought-leaders and thought-guides, therefore teachers are
strongly passionate to conduct research and also fine-tune their teaching pedagogies and the findings
using the research outcomes on the subject.
The proposed Faculty Development Program (FDP) has been designed as a specialized program for
career development and advancement of faculty members from Management disciplines. The proposed
Program is expected to develop their competencies in identifying contemporary research areas,
understanding recent developments and advancements made in the identified subject domain researches
through wide spectrum of research designs and learning to select correct teaching pedagogy backed by
well proven scientific findings. It will enable them to effectively use the judicious mix of qualitative and
quantitative statistical tools/techniques/methods in order to enrich the quality of research to be
undertaken by them either in their individual capacity or on the platform of an institute.
The proposed FDP has been broadly designed keeping in mind the following three factors into
consideration-the knowledge, the contents, and the processes. The roadmap of the proposed FDP
comprises various advanced level research topics like ANOVA, Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor
Analysis, Cluster Analysis, Discriminant Analysis, and Structural Equation Modeling etc. The focus is,
therefore, not only on exploring the conceptual understanding of these topics but also enabling
participants to understand the usages of statistical tools/techniques/software like SPSS and LISREL for
treatment of the collected data. However, usages of such research tools and advanced statistical
techniques will be situation-specific and the interpretation of outcomes will be the prime focus of
technical sessions planned for the FDP.
Objectives
Following participants focused broad objectives of the proposed FDP will be to:
Strengthen and enrich research backed teaching – learning pedagogy; Give proper insight into the quantitative and qualitative research methods; Identify contemporary research areas/issues and suggest a workable methodology to academic
institutions for closely working with industries;
Application ID: 3
All India Council for Technical Education
(A Statutory body under Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India)
Familiarize with the use of advanced tools for conducting research as well as the statistical software like SPSS and LISREL etc;
Extend support in getting hands-on experience to use software for applying advanced statistical tools like multiple regression, multi-discriminate analysis, structural equation modeling and econometric models; and
Enhance competency for undertaking quality research at par with international standards.
Project Impact - Expected Outcome
After attending the proposed Program, participants are likely to gain better insight and understanding
into the contemporary research areas. This would enable them to synchronize and attune their research
projects with industry relevance wherein the burning and pressing issues can be addressed through their
valuable suggestions and recommendations made out of research findings. Thus the proposed Program
sets high quality standards in order to produce knowledge that is applicable outside the research settings
with implications that go beyond the groups, who have participated in the conduct of research.
A sound research project’s edifice quite often relies on the research design and the research
methodology adopted to arrive at the genuineness in its findings. Thus through this Program,
participants would gain conceptual clarity of the research design and methodology. Familiarity with the
research tools and techniques would further enable participants to do statistical analysis as well as the
interpretations correctly. Thus participants will learn to appreciate and build coherent relationships
between and among the instruments, data and analytical methods; which is imperative for any good
research project.
Further through survey research technique method, participants will learn to develop capabilities to
design questionnaire and interview schedules. Subsequently, they would learn to collect relevant data
through survey research technique method by which they can examine and test the hypotheses.
A mixed bag of qualitative and quantitative research method is considered to be imperative these days to
develop and enhance the quality of research. After undergoing the Program, participants would be
expected to demonstrate proficiency in applying the judicious mix of research methods in developing
and conducting empirical studies.
Participants having familiarity with advanced statistical techniques like Regression Analysis,
Discriminant Analysis, Cluster Analysis and ANOVA will find this Program as booster dose/inputs and
Application ID: 4
All India Council for Technical Education
(A Statutory body under Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India)
thus be able to develop proficiency in applying advanced statistical tools and techniques, and
simultaneously interpret the data with approximation generated out of SPSS.
The familiarity with structural equation modeling and software usage LISREL for the same would bring
participants to a level where they can do model testing fitness and construct development. This would
eventually develop their competencies to conduct quality research and the acceptability of the same in
the high professional circles. Further, these inputs will also facilitate participants to effectively guide
their present and the future research scholars.
