Lauderdale, Florida, has grown to become one of the busiest cruise ports in theworld with 14 cruise lines, 50 cruise ships, more than 2,000 different cruises, andover 3.8 million passengers expected this year.

Our goal is simple: to be the best at what we do. So we’re constantly investing inimprovements to meet the growing needs of the cruise industry and their guests. Weprovide modern, spacious and comfortable cruise terminals, and a dedicated cus-tomer service staff to work directly with cruise lines. After all, cruise vacationerseagerly await their cruise, so we see it as our job to make sure that any time spentin Port Everglades only enhances that experience.

The world’s top cruise lines have discovered the many advantages of homeporting atPort Everglades.

• A deep harbor

• Direct highway access

• Multiple port entrances

• In the heart of a popular tourist destination

• Our proximity to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and its low-cost carriers

We asked our cruise guests to “bring it on.” As a result, our guests now enjoynew easy-to-read directional signs, wider roadways, faster taxi and limo service, more on-site parking, an informative new website, a cell phone waiting area forthose picking up returning cruise guests, and, for some guests, a new megacruise terminal.

No wonder we’ve been recognized by major cruise magazines as one of the mostconvenient, friendly and efficient ports for discerning travelers. Just as exciting isthe emergence of Greater Fort Lauderdale as a luxurious destination for pre- orpost-cruise vacations. Cruise passengers sailing out of Port Everglades can nowbook a hotel room and plan their pre- and post-cruise vacation directly atwww.porteverglades.net.

In the Caribbean and Latin America, Christmas is not heralded by a white cloud offresh snowfall. Nor does Santa travel by sleigh to bear his gifts to the deserving chil-dren. Instead, Old St. Nick can be found onboard a ship of one of FCCA’s MemberLines, as Santa has been cruising to these destinations and delivering smiles and pre-sents to thousands of children for the past 15 years.

This year, close to 7,000 kids who would not have had any presents under theirChristmas trees (or a Christmas tree, for that matter) in 33 destinations throughoutthe Caribbean and Latin America were able to share in the yuletide festivities and joybecause of this project put together by the FCCA Foundation, FCCA Member Linesand the efforts of many throughout the destinations.

Covadonga Gomez, director for the Hotels & Tourist Associations of Acapulco andone of those who assisted in organizing the event in their destination, shared ananecdote that displays the importance of this project: “I remember two (2) years ago,a 6-year-old child in his bed said to his mother when Santa gave him an action fig-ure, ‘See, I told you he knew I was here.’ His mother later explained that due to hisillness and costs of treatment, she had told her son that Santa would not be visitinghim that year.”

Holiday Gift Project

Gala-Prog-2011.e$S_Gala Program 3/29/11 11:27 AM Page 22

Page 23: FCCA Gala Program 2011

As Ms. Gomez also said, “This was the best Christmas for many children and a greatpresent for Acapulco. I am sure that these gifts made one of the most memorabledays for many children and their families.” Indeed, the significance is pretty clear, andthe hard work is rewarded through every smile.

This is why all those who assist with this project are so impassioned and excited todo so every year. Even cruise passengers get swept up in the emotion. “One high-light this year was meeting a couple who were not crew on the ship but actualguests who learnt that this was happening and gave their time to come ashore justfor participation in this activity,” told the permanent secretary of the Virgin Islands.

Carla Sinton, youth director of Carnival Valor, also shared this fervor and actually wasgrateful to assist: “Thank you so much for letting us be part of this special day. Wehad a great time interacting with the children & seeing their big bright smiles. FCCAreally is a wonderful organization doing amazing things for so many children. I’m soglad we got to be part of that today.”

This enthusiasm was also experienced by Sharon Williams, cruise liaison officer,Jamaica Tourist Board: “On behalf of our destination, Jamaica, a huge thank you tothe FCCA for your kind consideration to treat over 400 children in our ports. Thisgesture is very much appreciated. The Carnival Team, as usual was so very energet-ic, creative, and helpful. The day was filled with so much fun, frolic and excite-ment. It was just awesome. The little ones were so at home onboard with Santaand the crew, you could tell that they were definitely having fun.”

It would be difficult to not share the joy of the children as they received gifts whileknowing that they would not have had this privilege without this project. It is tooeasy for some of us to take a “normal” Christmas for granted, but these childrenand participants truly enjoyed and appreciated every moment and will cherish theirgifts for time to come.

This is exactly why the FCCA Foundation exists—to improve the lives of those lessfortunate throughout the Caribbean and Latin America, primarily for children’s caus-es. Every smile is a reminder of this mandate and is more than worth the $3 millionprovided for causes and projects like these.

Each year, the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) invites students from theCaribbean and Latin America to participate in the annual FCCA Foundation Children’sEnvironmental Poster Competition.

Students were asked to create a poster that visually depicted at least three ways they believedcould help protect the environment and promote environmental awareness in their country.

The competition’s purpose is to promote and stimulate environmental awareness amongstudents and to effectively educate the younger generations on the importance of envi-ronmental protection.

This year, 13 destinations throughout the Caribbean and Latin America participated. Eachcountry submitted one poster in each age category to represent its finalists.

One entry per category was selected as a winner for the best message that advocated therole each destination plays in preserving the environment.

Winners included 12-year-old Kaela Smith of Conrinaldi Avenue Primary from Jamaica inthe Junior Division (ages 12 and younger) and 15-year-old Kerri Bascom of Queen’s Collegefrom Bahamas in the Senior Division (ages 13-16). Kaela and Kerri will each receive an edu-cational scholarship of US$3,000 and equal donations for their respective schools.

Kaela Smith’s poster, “Stop! Think! Reduce your Carbon Footprint!” illustrates three waysin which we can protect our environment. More so, it displays ways of preserving our envi-ronment by means of recycling, organic farming, and reforestation.

Kerri Bascom’s poster, “Pollution, Everyone’s Problem” illustrates the different ways in pre-serving our environment, as well as the dangers and consequences of polluting our earth. The poster depicts the many ways in which we can educate our youth and promote formsof saving our planet.

The FCCA also congratulates the second- and third-place winners in each division. Second-place finalists were 12-year-old Daniel Lashley from Barbados in the Junior Category and14-year-old Sophia Taisha Boyer from Haiti in the Senior Category. Third-place winners were12-year-old Ludivine Ramaroson from Martinique in the Junior Category and 15-year-oldBrenden Gonsalves from Barbados in the Senior Category. Second-place winners in bothcategories will each receive US$1,500, and third place winners will receive US$1,000.

The FCCA also awards the schools of the first-, second- and third-place winners in both cat-egories the same amount received by their winning student. All finalists in each division willreceive US$200 to reward their participation and good work.
