DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
HAS IT ALL
By land or by sea.
Underprivileged children had something to celebrate last holiday season because ofthe 19th annual FCCA Holiday Gift Project. The FCCA Foundation again partneredwith FCCA Member Lines and their crews, along with private and public sector rep-resentatives within participating destinations, to deliver presents, festivities andsmiles to deserving children.
In December 2014, nearly 7,000 children throughout 33 Caribbean and LatinAmerican destinations shouted out with glee because of this project. The FCCAFoundation contributed gifts selected for age groups and genders specified by thedestinations. Then Member Lines loaded the presents onboard their vessels andserved as Santa’s sleigh to bring the presents to partnering destinations, where destination representatives waited with the children, holiday celebrations and Old St. Nick himself.
The cheer extended past the children; all of those involved exemplified the givingspirit and realized the project’s importance, knowing the children probably would notreceive toys and smiles otherwise. Sherryl Bacayo, training specialist on NorwegianJewel, showed this in her comment: “…being a part of the Belize [Holiday Gift] pro-ject allowed me to experience what it is to make a life by what we give. It was sucha great joy to see smiles on those lovely little ones. I felt the true spirit of Christmas.”
“You could see the happiness and excitement on the kid’s faces as the boxes of toyswere offloaded and Santa Claus came to their school,” told Dorothy Dorado, youthdirector, Carnival Liberty. “It felt so good to see the kids jumping and screamingwhen they see us coming. We left the school with tears in our eyes.”
Sherryl and Dorothy touched not just on the sentiment, but also on part of theimportance of the festivities and the meaning for all involved—letting kids enjoybeing kids, a concept seemingly simple, but mostly unknown to children in the shel-ters and homes benefitted by the project.
Michele Paige, president of the FCCA, also recognized this significance: “The FCCAHoliday Gift Project brings happiness to children who truly deserve it. The cruise

Holiday Gift Project
industry is proud to give back to the communities of the destinations we call, and Icannot think of a more rewarding way than bringing cheer and aid to children whoneed it.”
Margaret Jones, manager of visitor relations for Jamaica Tourist Board, summed it upwell as she explained the project and its long history in Jamaica: The FCCA Holiday Gift Project has brought smiles to the faces of hundreds ofJamaican children. Since its inception, the FCCA has lived up to its commit-ment....providing toys for the children who are less fortunate. Over the years, theMinistry of Tourism and the Jamaica Tourist Board have joined with the FCCA and itsmember lines to make the gift giving a wonderful experience. Each year, the select-ed children are feted and fed! They are entertained, and the "icing on the cake" isgetting their gift from “Santa!”
We at the Jamaica Tourist Board have been the facilitators of this wonderful event, and each year we look forward to working with the FCCA to make this a great expe-rience for the children.
It is certainly clear that the gifts are selected with great thought and care each year, and the squeals of delight from the children tell of their happiness.
The FCCA Gift Project has definitely been a wonderful expression of reaching outand working with the ports and communities that its Member Lines visit through theyear. The experience of attending a Christmas party on a cruise ship is as exciting asit gets; for these children it's pure joy.
Margaret, and the Holiday Gift Project, encapsulated the overall purpose of theFCCA Foundation—to improve the lives of those less fortunate throughout theCaribbean and Latin America, primarily for children’s causes. Every smile is areminder of this mandate and an invaluable return on the time, efforts and fundsprovided for causes and projects like these over the Foundation’s 20-year existence.

The FCCA Foundation
Foundation HistoryThe FCCA Foundation provides a tangible mechanism for the cruise industry to funda range of humanitarian causes throughout the FCCA’s Caribbean and LatinAmerican partner destinations. In its 20 years, the Foundation has impacted thou-sands of citizens by providing supplies, countless hours and millions of dollars tocauses throughout the regions. In addition to assisting deserving institutions likecharities and hospitals and aiding during crises like natural disasters, the Foundationexecutes annual projects, including:
• Holiday Gift Project – The FCCA reaches out to many Caribbean and Latin American destinations by providing holiday gifts, cheer and festivities to children in foster homes or institutions that would likely receive nothing otherwise. The presents are delivered to partner destinations on Member Lines’ vessels, and the crew and FCCA associates then distribute the gifts at parties. In 2014, 33 destinations participated in the program, with about 7,000 children benefitting from the efforts.
• Children’s Essay and Poster Competitions – The FCCA orchestrates these two competitions to further educate FCCA destination partners’ youth by learning and thinking about the cruise industry’s impact, along with their destinations’ and citizens’ roles in it, while also prompting practical problem solving. There are two divisions—junior (12 years and under) and senior (13-16)—that each receive 1st-3rd-place prizes of 3,000, 1,500 and 1,000, respectively, for themselves and their schools, along with a $200 award for every finalist submitted by the participatingdestinations. The first place recipients also receive functions in their honor.
Additionally, the Foundation works with destinations to ascertain and meet theirneeds as they become applicable. Past examples include:• Donated incubators and air conditioners for schools, hospitals and orphanages in
Colombia. • Donated air conditioners, along with stoves and laundry machines for vocation
training, to an at-risk youth center in Panama. • Donated computers to schools in Guatemala.• Donated school supplies to Jamaica and St. Lucia.• Donated wood to fix homes in Belize.• Donated paint for beautification projects in Belize, Costa Rica and Jamaica.• Provided cots, water and canned goods via Member Line vessels for disaster relief.• Cleaned streets as part of hurricane relief in Cozumel, Mexico.• Orchestrated specialized holiday projects in Cozumel to provide 1,000 bicycles
over a two-year span, which afforded transportation to underprivileged children.• Funded schools and colleges in various destinations.• Established a tourism school in St. Lucia.
