Based largely on the staggering sales of the iPhone over the past 10 years the value of the company has grown exponentially. Now I won’t go getting caught up in the PC versus Apple debate and which is better or why. However, way back when, in the late 80’s I had an Apple IIe computer because the school I worked at used them. About the same time the Mac came out, I got one of them and the user friendliness kept me faithful to the brand since. I have always found Apple products aesthetically pleasing, nice to handle, ergonomically friendly and a little bit quirky. They just have that smell when you take them out of the packet, like a new car, they are so slick with their presentation as well. So, as an Apple fan, I am excited about the success of the company. Those of us who can cast our minds back a decade or so will remember the Apple marketing slogan, Think Different . It was a huge success, before the iPhone it saw sales of Apple gear skyrocket as well. And it wasn’t just a snazzy quote. Apple have always been the odd thinker in the Info Tech industry. Steve Jobs is famous for asking, ‘Why?’. Why are we here, why are we making this product, why should we do it differently? Find that out first and then work outwards from there. Most companies will ask first, what? What have we got and how can we distribute it. Steve Jobs thought differently, he asked why are we doing it, when he understood that it influenced the what and the how. Powerful thinking if it works. Education at the moment is at a cross roads. We need to think different! And we are. Here at FLCR we are on a journey, sometimes with small steps, sometimes with big ones but always with an improvement agenda. If you follow us on Facebook you will have seen this week that we held a Back to Business Forum (B2B). This was completely organised and delivered by our Year 12 Diploma of Business Students. It was a significant event and I thank members of our community who made time to both attend and present. The Keynote Speaker for the morning was a 16 year-old millionaire named Rylan Kindness who is still in Year 12 at a local Brisbane school. He runs his own business called Parking Deals Australia. He talked about entrepreneurship and shared his story of starting up his business and the challenges along the way. And guess what? Creativity, innovation, collaboration, problem solving, they were the big-ticket items that have seen him have success. His take on schools was interesting. Basically, schools give you information, you memorise it and write it down in an exam and then forget it. The real stuff you need was bigger than that. A laser sharp focus, hard work, identifying a problem or need and getting on with it while collaborating with others along the way towards success. Powerful words from a young kid and words that echo the very stuff that education is banging on about in our new reality. So, we continue to do our best, to think different, to move and shake and take the best bits and leave the unnecessary behind. This week we are moving our Library and ICT at the Secondary Campus into our Lighthouse building, we are creating a new, open, collaborative, connected and contemporary learning environment. It is at the beginning stages but already looking really cool. I can’t wait to see how it grows and changes in support of our student’s learning. There are exciting things happening here at FLCR, it is wonderful to be part of it and to feel the buzz as we continue to be at the front end of what is best. Shane Altmann Principal

THINK DIFFERENTApple Computers have become the first U.S. listed, trillion dollar, public company this week.

Those of us who can cast our minds back a decade or so will remember the Apple marketing slogan, Think Different.

Creativity, innovation, collaboration, problem solving, they were the big-ticket items that have seen him have success. His take on schools was interesting. SECONDARY SCHOOL

DROUGHT RELIEF ASSISTANCE – The College is aware and supportive of the great variety of different campaigns that are currently underway to support our Australian farmers experiencing severe hardships as a result of the drought conditions. We are currently looking at different ways our College can support the cause including working within the existing College Calendar to ensure we don’t overload our families. Once plans are finalised we will promote and share within our community. Thank you to our many families who we know have also made the decision at a family level to support our struggling farming community and educate our children on the plight of those on the land.

WHOLE COLLEGE

During the last fortnight I have delivered two speeches to our students and parents. One at the Year 11 Garden Party and one at the Semester One Celebration of Learning. My two key messages from these were:

1. Enjoy the journey that is school, don’t just rush to get to the destination. Our students are blessed to have so many opportunities available to them at Faith. I encouraged every student to become as involved in the College as possible and to do as many activities as they can.

2. Behind successful people there is always effort. We often refer to the likes of Roger Federer as gifted or talented. These words don’t do them justice. He would have hit several million tennis balls to get to where he is today. The effort is often unseen; however, is probably the most important thing.

The pictures below highlight some of the amazing things happening at the College. Thank you to all the parents that support our students on their journey.

ATHLETIC CARNIVALSBayside District Track and Field Carnival (10-12 Years) Good luck to our students competing at the 10-12 years Bayside District Carnival on 9 and 10 August.

Bayside District Track and Field Carnival (13-19 Years) Congratulations to all students who participated in this Carnival. Thursday, 3 August and Friday, 4 August. We will announce all students selected in the Bayside District Team after the 10-12yrs Athletics Carnival.

GBC Athletics Carnival - Wednesday, 19 September This will be held at QSAC and more information will be forwarded to you later in the Term. SPORTS GUESTOn Tuesday, 7 August a select number of Secondary School students were very fortunate to secure a workshop with Tim Horan. This was a fantastic session for our students. Tim had a very hands on approach, he spent time running the students through a training session and sharing stories about his career as a professional athlete. This was another great opportunity for our students involved in sport at Faith.
