What’s it all about?

The Emerging Nurse Leader (ENL) Program is a three-year initiative that provides participating students and nurses with a unique

opportunity to develop leadership skills that can be applied throughout their nursing careers. Each year this award is offered to five

outstanding nurse leaders of the future.

The vision

The vision of the ENL Program came from many years of

discussion and feedback from senior leaders within the profession.

These conversations told us that there are many experienced

leaders projected to retire over the next decade, and this will

equate to the loss of many senior nurse leaders. Furthermore,

generational experts tell us that there are high numbers of early

career nurses leaving the profession.

The ENL Program looks to address these workforce issues

by creating a platform that recognises potential and assists to

cultivate future leaders.

The content

Year one: third year student

Individual focus (self-awareness)

The first year of the program introduces the identification of

leadership qualities and skills. ENLs will identify their own potential

leadership qualities and seek to recognise how these qualities may

be utilised.

Year two: graduate nurse

Team focus (awareness of influence on others)

The second year of the program provides consolidation through a

deeper analysis of leadership qualities and skills. ENLs will identify

and analyse their own leadership qualities and reflect on how these

qualities can be developed.

Year three: launching career

Profession focus (career and leadership vision)

The third year of the program focusses on developing leadership

qualities and skills. ENLs will further develop their own leadership

qualities and apply them to professional activities.

How does it work?

The ENL Program identifies pre-registration nursing students who

have demonstrated a commitment to leadership in nursing through

their involvement in student activities, community activities, student

representation and/or other involvement in the advancement of the

nursing profession.

ACN supports ENL participants through a three year program of

personal and professional development.

The ENL Program offers participants the opportunity to:

> receive complimentary membership to ACN for a period of

three years

> complete a 360 degree Leadership Skills Inventory

> complete a Leadership Capability Workbook

> attend an ACN national event, expos and professional events

in the Australian nursing calendar

> participate in policy work with support from senior nurses

> participate in discussions on professional issues through ACN

representative opportunities.

Who can apply?

Successful applicants of the ENL Program are exemplary

pre-registration nursing students who:

> are in their second year of study of a Bachelor of Nursing

degree, or in their first year of a Masters level pre-registration

nursing degree, at an Australian university

> are actively looking toward the advancement of the nursing

profession in Australia

> are involved in volunteer or community projects
