TECTONIC FORMS STUDIODiagridSummer 2015
Using delicate materials I explored how a diagrid form can be aggregated and then behave. The diamond-like facets give the form a sharp and striking appearance that still has a beautiful allowance of filtering light. I considered what kind of impression the form might leave behind after it is gone.
6
After analysis of the diagrid form, the objective is to make an artist’s studio from the aggregated shape that is inspiring and stimulating for students. The form was generated by draping a sheet over the previous 3D-printed study. The former shape was punctured and sharp. This practical move allows for shelter, and gives the structure more of concave and convex factes like a diamond. The result is a dynamic and unique interior workspace. When exterior structure is viewed in plan, countour lines extend laterally to influence landscaping as well as longitudinally drop into the studio to inspire where walls should exist. It was an important goal for the space to reamin open and tall to induce creative thinking.

Rowhouses, traditionally are both energy and space efficient but lack in natural sunlight penetration, spaciousness, and privacy. With these typical faults in mind I created a design that solves several of the issues. With a large central courtyard, a light well is created to let light and ventilation into every room in the house from North and South directions. Various floor heights in a floor allow the space to be perceived as longer and higher. With nature and exposure to the outdoors happening within the floorplate, the house remains private and a personal universe for the family.

In local efforts to revitalize Pogues parking garage in downtown Cincinnati, the challenge was to create a program that would draw people from the street up to the roof of the garage. I aimed to produce a beacon of learning and growth in all aspects of the human experience. I incorporated three different recreational buildings that stimulate the physical, intellectual, and emotional.

An architectural exploration in Chicago inspired a study of John Ronan’s Poetry Foundation. I was mostly intrigued by his play with layers and screens. Through diagram and physical model I studied the privacy gradient and circulation as the visitor moves to the secret space. This concept proves that an experience for the human in a space is laregly about the reward in the journey.

G|R|E|C is a mid-size firm located in the heart of bustling Michigan Avenue, in Chicago. Their work specializes primarily in multi-family housing and coorporate structures. I spent my months at the firm devoted to the firm’s largest project to date. A 70-story apartment, condominium and penthouse structure to be built locally required coordination in several technical areas. I worked on accessibility requirements for units, calculating operable vent coverage, and laying out bathroom and kitchen designs for a wide variety of unit shapes.

I believe that travel and exposure to history as well as other cultural norms is very important in understanding and creating pleasant spaces. I am consitently fascinated by both the rugged and constructed beauty that has withstood time and elements.

“Architecture is exposed to life. If its body is sensitive enough, it can assume a quality that bears witness to the reality of past life.”
