Historythe Eastern Michigan University Men’s ice hockey team is en-tering its 35th season of intercollegiate play. since 1976, the

EMU hockey club has competed at the highest levels of semi-varsity hockey in the United states − finishing as cschl league champions and qualifying for the national tournament several times in recent history. the EMU Eagles have finished as national runner Up twice and are still striving to win their first

national title in the ultra competitive Division 1 of the acha.

Competitionin 2010-2011, EMU joined the newly formed great lakes collegiate hockey league as an inaugural member. Joining them will be oakland University, Davenport University, West-ern Michigan University, adrian college, and the University of Michigan Dearborn. in addition to their in-league schedule, EMU competes on a rotating schedule with other top Division 1 acha programs such as lindenwood University, ohio University, illinois University, Penn state University, and others. the EMU Eagles play approximately 40 games per season including non-league and exhibition games, as well as the glchl playoffs and the acha national championship tournament.

Program AmenitiesEMU hockey players are provided with a first class college hockey experience. Players have a private, dedicated lock-er room with individual stalls and shower facilities, weight room, and equipment room. Players receive team apparel, full outer equipment including helmets, gloves, pants, prac-tice jerseys, practice socks, bags, tape, et cetera. EMU pro-vides charter bus transport or airline transport to all games with the exception of U of M Dearborn which is located only ten miles from the campus. EMU employs an experienced coaching staff that includes former collegiate players with extensive playing and coaching resumes. the Eagles have on-ice and off-ice practice three times per week in addition to their game schedule.

Costsemi-varsity hockey requires player fees to offset the cost of the program. While some acha programs charge as much as $5000 to play, our fees are approximately $2500 per season. the cost structure at EMU is offset by player fundraising opportunities including media guide advertis-ing sales, of which 100% percent of the monies generated go to reducing player fees. Many EMU players do not pay anything out of pocket due to the extensive fundraising op-portunities provided to them. Players are given tremendous

value for their fees, as our facilities, travel, and practice schedule are superior to many ncaa Division 3 programs. in addition to low player fees, Eastern Michigan University has some of the lowest tuition rates for large Universities in the Midwest, making it very affordable to attend a Univer-sity and play college hockey.

Campus LifeEMU is home to a diverse student body, with many stu-dents from Michigan, ontario, and around the Midwest. EMU is recognized as having one of Michigan’s elite nurs-ing, education, and business curriculums in addition to its close proximity the University of Michigan. the ann arbor-ypsilanti area is rich with nightlife and opportunities for social interaction, with two large universities right next door to each other. Eastern Michigan University is located in ypsilanti, Michigan, about 30 minutes west of Downtown Detroit. Prospective student athletes are encouraged to visit www.emich.edu for more information on university pro-grams, campus life, and how to apply.

Recruiting Informationstudents interested in joining the Eagles can find contact in-formation and recruiting forms on the team website located at www.easternmichiganhockey.com.

Former NAHL Players Make Way to EMUthe off-season was a busy one for head coach kevin gee. not only did he take over the reins as general Manager, moved the club to the state of the art taylor sportsplex, but he also upped the anty on recruiting in the glchl as well.

Page 10: Eastern Michigan University Men's Ice Hockey

EMU added three more former nahl Jr. a players this season in its quest to build a national contender, adding kevin kis-saw, Bryan kozlowski, and ryan amin to current roster mates gary astalos (kenai river), Jason simota (youngstown), and Jeff scherrer (Motor city).

“recruiting is the recipe for success at the acha Division 1 level. Finding talented players who fit our needs is critical for us to continue to buid the program. you can’t just hope good players show up at camp” said head coach kevin gee. in goal, EMU solidified its depth, replacing graduating senior rob cupit with former nahl all-star and goodrich, Mi native kevin kissaw. kissaw was 40-26-5, with a 2.67 gaa and a .916 save percentage in two seasons with the Marquette rangers. kissaw took a year off last season to nurse a knee injury, but is looking forward to his first season with the Eagles.

Up front, Wichita Falls Forward Bryan kozlowski and traverse city forward ryan amin will be looked at to provide some scor-ing punch for the Eagles. kozlowski, a 6’3”, 190lb winger from livonia, Mi, is a smooth skater and has a soft scoring touch. canton, Mi native ryan amin, who’s brother aaron is an Eagles captain, is a gritty two way center with a hard shot and great vision on the ice. amin totaled 14g-17a-31P and 50PiM in 74 gP with the traverse city north stars over two seasons.

adding to a solid incoming class, the Eagles received some added depth with new additions Jordan roemer (cobourg, ont/Wooster oilers Jr. B) anthony stankiewicz (Dearborn heights, Mi/Wheatley sharks Jr. c) and Joshua Whitney (how-ell, Mi/Minnesota icehawks Jr. a).

head coach kevin gee had the following comments about his new commitments: roemer is a 5’10” 190lb puck moving defenseman with a mean streak, he will be counted on heav-ily on special teams, and to replace departed defensive leader adam Petsche. “he makes a great first pass, and can move the puck well. he’s calm in his own end and we are looking forward to having him in the lineup.”

stankiewicz is a 5’11” 175lb winger who can be counted on to kill penalties and compete every shift. “he’s tough to play against. i’ve coached against anthony before and competes for 60 minutes every night. he’s a nice playmaker too, which will definately complement some of our centermen.”

Whitney is a 5’10” 170lb center with exceptional skill, and will be counted on to provide scoring depth and speed up front. “he’s terrific with the puck, but most importantly he can flat-out score. We were lacking in that department last season and he’s going to be a huge part of our turnaround this year.”

the american collegiate hockey as-sociation (acha) is an organization of college/University affiliated programs, which provides structure, regulates operations and promotes the quality of collegiate ice hockey. the acha is a chartered non-profit corporation and is classified as a 501 (c) (3) organization with the internal revenue service.

the acha was established on april 20, 1991. Fifteen charter members met during the chicago showcase in skokie, il at the north shore hilton. these member teams had been play-ing college hockey for many years but wished to legitimize its play by stan-dardizing some of its procedures.

the members that created the orga-nization were: tom keegan (acha), al Murdoch (iowa state), Joe Battista

(Penn state), Jim gilmore (ohio), Ernie Ferrari (stanford), howard Jenks (cali-fornia-Berkeley), Jeff aikens (north Da-kota state), Don spencer (West virgin-ia), Jim Barry (navy), scott Fuller (navy), leo golembiewski (arizona), ron starr (Depaul), cary adams (Pcha), Jim War-den (Pcha), and Jack White (Ucla).

the inaugural year of the acha was the 1991-1992 season. the goal of the organization was to create an impartial governing body to monitor national tournaments, player eligibil-ity, and general oversight. over the years, this initial goal has evolved into the organization’s mission state-ment: the acha’s primary mission is to support the growth of two-year and four-year collegiate hockey programs nationwide; the acha identifies stan-dards that serve to unite and regu-

late teams at the collegiate level; the acha shall emphasize academic per-formance, institutional sanction, eli-gibility criteria, and standards of play and opportunities for national compe-tition; and the acha promotes all as-pects of collegiate hockey stressing the personal development of individu-al athletes as well as national recog-nition for member organizations.

all acha teams are members of Usa hockey and joined the american hockey coaches association (ahca) in 1999.
