Last Time OutA standing-room-only crowd of 4,074 at Quinnipiac’s High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center saw the nationally-ranked No. 1 Bobcats capture the 11th Annual He-roes Hat with a 4-1 win against No. 13 Yale on Friday, Feb. 22. Sophomore Connor Jones (Montrose, British Columbia) picked apart the Bulldogs line-up with a three-point night that saw the speedy center tally a goal and two assists. Line mates Matthew Peca (Petawawa, Ontario) and Kellen Jones (Montrose, Brit-ish Columbia) both scored, while freshman Travis St. Denis (Trail, British Columbia) also added a goal.Bobcats’ goalie, and Hobey Baker candidate, Eric Hartzell (White Bear Lake, Minn.) blanked Yale over the first two periods, while first period goals from Peca, Kellen and St. Denis staked the Bobcats to a 3-0 lead and chased Yale starting goalie Connor Wilson after 20 minutes of play. Yale’s Kenny Agostino scored his 13th goal of the year just two minutes into the final frame to ruin Hartzell’s shut-out bid. The Bobcats’ goalie denied 30 shots for the night to im-prove to 23-3-4 overall.

Quinnipiac’s Most Important Poll For the first time in program history, the Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey team was ranked No. 1 in the USCHO.com Division I poll and the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll, as announced on Feb. 11, 2013. Not only was the Bobcats’ No. 1 ranking a first in program history, but it was also the first time a Quinnipiac athletic program has been nationally-ranked No. 1. The Bobcats retained their No. 1 ranking on Feb. 18.

The PairWise RankingsDespite a loss on Friday night, Quinnipiac rebounded with a win on Saturday. Coupled with losses over the weekend by six of the top seven teams, the top-ranked Bobcats remained at the top of the PairWise Rankings. Quinnipiac has held down the top spot in the PairWise rankings since Jan. 19, 2013.

Scouting The Brown BearsThrough Friday night, Brown is currently 10-11-5 overall and 6-8-5 in ECAC Hockey, good for ninth place in the league standings. Last night, Brown defeated Princeton, 4-1, behind a pair of three-point nights from Garnet Hathaway and Mark Naclerio, who tallied a goal and two assists apiece, and a two-goal outing from Jeff Ryan. In goal, Anthony Borelli stopped 32 of 33 shots on goal. Brown owned a four-game unbeaten streak before being swept last weekend in the Capital District with a pair of losses to Rensselaer (5-1) and Union (2-0). Sophomore Matt Lorito leads Brown in goals (14), assists (12) and points (26), with 19 of his points coming in ECAC Hockey games. Garnet Hathaway (5-11-16) and Dennis Robertson (1-12-13) round out the Bears’ top scorers. In goal, Anthony Borelli has appeared in 18 games, logging 62% of the minutes between the pipes. Borelli is 8-6-4 with a 1.61 GAA and a .948 save per-centage, both figures that rank in the top 10 nationally.

All-Time Against the BearsQuinnipiac is 13-5-3 all-time against Brown, including a 11-1-1 record at home against the Bears and a 2-3-3 mark at Meehan Auditorium. Quinnipiac and Brown have tied in their last three outings at Meehan - 2-2 on Jan. 7, 2012; 3-3 on Nov. 5, 2010 and 1-1 on Feb. 1, 2013. Last season, Quinnipiac was 3-1-1 against Brown, including wins in Games 2 & 3 of the ECAC Hockey Tournament First Round series at High Point Solutions Arena.

The Last Time They PlayedQuinnipiac and Brown skated to a 1-1 tie on Feb. 1, 2013, with both teams scoring in the second period. Brandon Pfeil scored the game’s first goal 13-minutes into the second frame before Connor Jones scored the equalizer less than three minutes later. Perhaps a showcase for the league’s top two goaltenders, Eric Hartzell stopped 30 of Brown’s 31 shots while Anthony Borelli stopped 38 of Quinnipiac’s 39 shots on goal.

Quinnipiac’s 20-Win FactsWith a win at Cornell on Friday, Feb. 8, Quinnipiac posted its 12th, 20-win season in its 15th year at the NCAA Division I level.
