MemoryFrom the beginning Christians have celebrated the Eucharist and in a form whose substance has not changed despite the great diversity of times and liturgies, because we know ourselves to be bound by the command the Lord gave on the eve of his Passion: “Do this in memory of me” (C.C.C. #1356).

“We carry out this command of the Lord by celebrating the memorial of His sacrifice. In so doing, we offer to the Father what He has Himself given us, the gifts of His creation: bread and wine which, by the power of the Holy Spirit and by the words of Christ, become the Body and Blood of Christ. Christ is thus really and mysteriously made present” (C.C.C. #1357).

For Jews, memory means “to participate in actively, as if one was present at the event being remembered.” An historical event of God’s action is not stuck in the past, but is constantly present in sacred gatherings that celebrate the memory of God’s salvation.

The Haggadah, a collection of instructions detailing the celebration of the Jewish Passover (Seder) meal, says “in every generation, every Jew must regard himself as though he, personally, was brought out of Egypt.”

“On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, Jesus’ disciples said to Him, ‘Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?’ He sent two of His disciples and said to them, ‘Go into the city and a man will meet you, carrying a jar of water. Follow him. Wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, ‘Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’” Mark 14:12-14.

“While they were eating, He took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, and said, ‘Take it; this is my body.’ Then He took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it. He said to them, ‘This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many.’” (Mark 14:22-24)

It is a vision of heaven: “After this I had a vision of an open door to heaven, and I heard the trumpet like voice that had spoken to me before, saying, ‘Come up here and I will show you what must happen afterwards.’” At once I was caught up in spirit. A throne was there in heaven, and on the throne sat one whose appearance sparkled like jasper and carnelian.” (Revelation 4:1-3a)

Liturgical action of heaven reported throughout the Old & New Testaments;

“In the earthly Liturgy we take part in a foretaste of that heavenly Liturgy which is celebrated in the holy City of Jerusalem toward which we journey as pilgrims, where Christ is sitting at the right hand of God, a minister of the holies and of the true tabernacle.” (Sacrosanctum Concilium 8)

What Changes & Why?

► Issues with the current translation● The present translation varies from the original

intent of the Latin text at times.● Some of the rich Biblical language and imagery

of the Latin has been lost.● Sometimes there is theological imprecision or or outright inaccuracy.● There is a desire to render the translation in a

way that makes it more easily prayed & sung.

1. Why a new Translation?► Two factors:

● Promulgation of Liturgiam authenticam.

● Promulgation of the third edition of the Roman Missal.

Current Translation (1975):

Lord, you feed us with bread from heaven. May we hear your Son with faith and become your children in name and in fact.

Roman Missal 2010:

Nourished with these sacred gifts,we humbly entreat your mercy, O Lord, that, by faithfully listening to your Only Begotten Son, we may be your children in name and in truth.

Theological imprecision with 1975:

“Become:” “Simus” is the first person plural passive subjunctive of esse, “to be.” Theologically we become children of God by Baptism and thus those “nourished with these sacred gifts” are already His children. Note also “Unigénitum,” is not translated.

► Compromises were made.

► The translation is not perfect; but translating is an inexact science.

CHALLENGESOne English translation for all English-speaking countries, but English is not the same for all peoples.

1. The Introductory Rites ► In the name of the Father, and of the

Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

● “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19).

► The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

● “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the holy Spirit be with all of you” (2 Corinthians 13:13).

► The Lord be with you.● “Boaz himself came from Bethlehem and said to the

harvesters, "The LORD be with you!" and they replied, "The LORD bless you!” (Ruth 2:4).

● “We who are strong in faith should be patient with the scruples of those whose faith is weak; we must not

“Spirit” refers to the special character, or altered essence received by the priest (or Deacon) at his ordination.

St. John Chrysostom says that the response, “And with your spirit,” is one through which we “remind ourselves that [the priest] does nothing of his own power, but is it the grace of the Spirit present and hovering over all things which prepared that mystic sacrifice;” – it is an acknowledgement of the Lord’s unique presence in the ordained minister.

2. The Preparation of the Gifts ► Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation,

2. The Liturgy of the Eucharist ► Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven &

earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name

3. Eucharistic Prayer III ► You are indeed Holy, O Lord, and all you have

created rightly gives you praise, for through your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, by the power and working of the Holy Spirit, you give life to all things and make them holy, and you never cease to gather a people to yourself, so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name.
