A distinctive and important charac- teristic of modern IT security is the breadth of the required techniques, which span from mathematical foundations to computer science to electrical engineering. We address the required interdis- ciplinarity by assigning a main and a secondary advisor to each PhD student. In some cases a third su- pervisor can broaden the multi- disciplinarity of the individual PhD project. A high quality education is assured by tailored graduate courses, semi- nars and annual summer schools. UbiCrypt Cryptography in Ubiquitous Computing Since 2012 the DFG-funded Re- search Training Group UbiCrypt at Ruhr University Bochum investi- gates cryptographic mechanisms which form the foundation for se- curity solutions in ubiquitous com- puting. A common theme is that new cryp- tographic methods are researched for applications which are distribu- ted and heavily inhomogeneous. The research topics range from cryptographic foundations such as fully homomorphic encryption over security for medical implants to in- ternet security solutions involving new national ID cards. Overall, the continuously merging Internet of Things shall be explored and se- cured from a variety of perspec- tives. Furthermore, we are always open to enrich the group with new mem- bers from all areas related to cryp- tographic research.

Program

The over-all objective of the DFG-funded Research Training Group UbiCrypt is to provide a doc-toral education in modern IT-se-curity at a top international level.

In order to combine cutting-edge research, interdisciplinarity and preparation for industrial and aca-demic careers with a dissertation period of three years, a structured training plan is the key feature of UbiCrypt, in addition to classical doctoral research. Each disserta-tion will be supervised by two or three Principal Investigators (PIs).

One important component for achieving this goal is a cooper-ation of the doctoral students among each other. Experience has shown that it is sometimes diffi -cult for PhD students to see how other dissertation projects are rel-evant for their individual research. In order to achieve this important goal UbiCrypt’s postdocs provide additional support as interdiscipli-nary coordinators.

We offer...

• Full PhD funding (TV-L 13) for a period of three years

• PhD positions for Collegiates with external funding

• Qualifying fellowships for out-standing Master students

• Travel scholarships for interna-tional Research Visits and oppor-tunities for conference funding

• Interdisciplinary Supervision

• Summer Schools & Workshops

• PhD Lectures, Seminar Series, Colloquia

• National and international net-works and collaborations

• Measurements for Gender Equality
