HELLO

Welcome to Derby Museums!

The last six months there has been great acti vity at the Museum and Art Gallery. In May we opened the Joseph Wright Insti tute, a combined gallery and research space enabling everyone to get close to our fabulous collecti ons of work by Joseph Wright of Derby. Virtually all of the material we hold by the arti st including prints, drawing and oil painti ng are now accessible to the public.

The opening of the Insti tute coincided with our hosti ng of the exhibiti on ‘Joseph Wright of Derby: Bath and Beyond,’ which conti nues unti l August 31. From September we’ll be hosti ng an exhibiti on of sculpture by Denis O’Connor in which he discusses the noti on of displacement and home. Originally from Ireland, Denis has lived in Derby for over 25 years and this exhibiti on is a personal explorati on of feelings of belonging and longing.

We are conti nuing our conversati ons with our visitors about developments to the new Nature Gallery. This summer there will be plenty of opportuniti es for you to contribute ideas and new perspecti ves to this project through our Nature Lab and workshops.Displays at Pickford’s House are being refreshed and central to this is a new exhibiti on of Lost Landscapes of Derby, watercolours from the collecti on amassed by Alfred Goodey. The pictures provide a glimpse of Derby through industrialisati on, war, fi re, and fl ood over two centuries.

At the Silk Mill we are conti nuing to inspire the next generati on of makers through our collecti ons and stories of making and getti ng hands on using our digital manufacturing equipment in the Silk Mill workshop.

If all this culture seems exhausti ng you’ll now be able to relax in The Coff ee House amidst the displays of Derby porcelain, which opened in mid-June at the Museum and Art Gallery. Here at Derby Museums, we can provide enlightenment for the mind and refreshment for the body!

Creeping, crawling, rolling and fl ying … our Natural History collecti on is on the move and we’d love you to help shape our plans. We’ve had some amazing suggesti ons from you already and would like to conti nue the dialogue in our new nature project space.

Over the coming months we will play and experiment with the possibiliti es for the new gallery and to trial some of your initi al ideas. We’d like to work with you to develop the interpretati on and select the specimens that will arti culate the themes you’ve asked for.

Drop into the project space to explore the plans with us and look out for a sequence of acti viti es and handling sessions designed to inspire your curiosity. We’re always interested in what you’ve noti ced about your own natural world and you’re welcome to leave your anecdotes, photographs, drawings and suggesti ons. The collecti on will begin to move in the Autumn so there’s plenty of ti me to join us. If you’d like to volunteer your ti me please email [email protected].

Joseph Wright of Derby: Bath and Beyond

unti l 31 AugustMuseum & Art GalleryFREE

Joseph Wright ‘of Derby’ (1734-1797) lived and worked in Bath between November 1775 and June 1777. This brief and litt le-known episode in Wright’s life marked a crossroads in his career, yet it has never been explored in detail. ‘Joseph Wright of Derby: Bath and Beyond’ will place Wright in the context of the many arti sts, musicians, writers, business people and scienti sts living and working in the Georgian spa town and present for the fi rst ti me a comprehensive view of his life and work duringthose eighteen months.

Defi ning a Line: New Sculpture by Denis O’connor

20 September-23 NovemberMuseum & Art GalleryFREE

Denis O’Connor’s small-scale steel sculptures reference the noti ons of ‘home’ and ‘displacement’ and are infl uenced by over 25 years of journeying between his homes in Derbyshire and Ireland. The new work plays with scale and creates a tension between the diff erent sculptural forms, communicati ng opposites such as stable and unstable, comfortable and uncomfortable, real and unreal. Each of these scenarios tries to address noti ons of belonging, identi ty and home, using recognisable domesti c objects such as chairs, ladders and houses.
