There are delights, curiositi es and challenges in store at Derby’s Museums this winter.

At the Museum and Art Gallery our exhibiti on The Curious Contrapti ons of Heath Robinson takes centre stage. As Peter Higginson the Chair of The Heath Robinson Trust noted, this delightf ul exhibiti on shows that “Science has to have zaniness to progress”. It’s Briti sh Science Week in February and there will be a range of acti viti es in The Silk Mill, the site of the world’s fi rst factory.

In March we are delighted to be parti cipati ng in the city-wide FORMAT Festi val. Created by our friends at QUAD this is the UK’s premier festi val of photography. Inspired by the theme of ‘Evidence’ there will be exhibiti ons throughout The Museum and Art Gallery and Pickford’s House, including work by photographers from all over the world.

In December Derby City Council announced that in 2015-16 it would cut 26% of the funding it gives to the Museum Trust. This amounts to £314,000 a year. The consequences of such a swift and deep reducti on in funding could result in the closure of Pickford’s House and a reducti on in opening hours at the Museum and Art Gallery and The Silk Mill. It is also likely that free family acti viti es and the exhibiti on programme will have to be curbed.

The Trust chairman Peter Smith says, “we recognise that the Council is faced with diffi cult decisions, but the depth and speed of these cuts means we can’t aff ord to provide the same level of acti vity. We urge Derby City Council to reconsider their decision so Derby people can learn more about their heritage and that the city can celebrate its story across the world.”

Derby Museums have come a long way in the two years since the Trust took over in 2012. We have re-opened The Silk Mill, created the Joseph Wright Insti tute, opened cafés for the fi rst ti me and next year two new galleries devoted to Derby’s natural world will open in the Museum and Art Gallery. Derby Museums has much to show off about this city to the world. Please help us keep it that way. See the opposite pages for ways you can support us.

Crawling, jumping, swimming and fl apping… our natural history collecti on is on the move and will emerge as a fl exible and creati ve display in March 2015.

We welcome you to join us as the new installati on begins to emerge. The gallery space will act as a giant project lab as we begin to place templates for fi xtures and selected specimens on the fl oor and walls. Dip in to share your thoughts or catch a pop-up event as we conti nue to test and experiment with the ideas that you’ve suggested.

We’re aiming for the gallery to act as a sti mulus, to excite and inspire you to take noti ce of your ‘own natural world’, to leave the gallery full of inspirati on and ideas with a desire to appreciate, take care of, learn about and respond to it.

the Curious Contraptions of heath robinson

unti l Sunday 1 March Museum & Art GalleryFREE

The name of Heath Robinson enters the English language as a term for crazy contrapti ons aft er only about ten years of his fi rst drawing of an overly complicated machine.

Arti st and illustrator William Heath Robinson (1872-1944) is best known for his drawings of machines, but he started his career as a serious book illustrator. The accessibility and humour of these contrapti ons and machines gives Heath Robinson an appeal that few other arti sts have achieved. His ability to take an everyday task and over complicate it in a way that we all fi nd amusing is a great skill.

This is a special exhibiti on of drawings of curious contrapti ons and mad machines from the collecti ons of The William Heath Robinson Trust. As the UK’s leading manufacturing city, Derby is a fi tti ng place to show the work of Heath Robinson. When The Silk Mill was built in the 1720s it was the world’s fi rst factory and since then Derby has been at the forefront of the creati on of machines. This is the fi rst exhibiti on of Heath Robinson’s work in Derby since 1941, when the museum curator recorded it as the most popular exhibiti on of that year.

We are privileged to be able to host this exhibiti on at the ti me that The William Heath Robinson Trust are building a new museum at West House in Pinner, Middlesex, due to open in 2016. This will be the only museum dedicated to Heath Robinson.

FORMAT is the UK’s most signifi cant biennale of photography taking place throughout Derby and curated around the theme of EVIDENCE. On a daily basis, we use photography to record our lives, routi nes, friends and encounters. Every two minutes, we take as many photos as the enti rety of humanity took during the 1800s. Millions of seemingly insignifi cant moments are recorded and shared online, creati ng inconclusive portraits of individuals, places and events. Through a selecti on of the best of internati onal photography in a diverse programme of exhibiti ons and events FORMAT will make sense of our complex world and its connecti on to EVIDENCE and the sti ll image, in a multi tude of inspiring ways.

FORMAT is organised by QUAD and the University of Derby and support by Derby Museums. For the full programme visit www.formatf esti val.com

Even with a history of two centuries, visual evidence records and photography have never been an acknowledged craft outside of its arenas of legal usage. These select records from the Indian region create a fascinati ng visual rhetoric of an unseen past. Everything is believable, and yet these visuals pose more questi ons than answers and suggest more than they show.

Peter Watkins

Nothing haunts us more than forgetti ng. Forgetti ng can be thought of as a form of death ever present in life. Watkins’ approach to photography begins with this parti cular form of memory; memory as if viewed through smoked glass, memory that has become murky and reduced by the passage of ti me.
