The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!by Pastor David Lippitt

It’s The MostWonderful Time of the Year! to quote the lyrics of the song sung by the late Andy Williams. The snows are falling (up north, that is). People are busy preparing for countless parties. And 2012 is sloooowly winding down, down, down. And we in the church

are preparing to celebrate our Lord’s Advent once again. We seem to go through the same motions every year. The wreath of five candles is displayed ornately in the chancel, while the sounds of “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” fill the vaulted spaces of the sanctuary. For an ever-growing number of people in our society, the period of time from Advent to Christmas means nothing more than an excuse to party and to shop. And the true meaning of the season is lost in the shuffle.

Christians are different. We make no claim to the value and importance that our culture finds in this wonderful time of the year. Christians are first and foremost expectant people. Like watchmen on the tower, we are called to be constantly alert to the in-breaking of God’s Kingdom in the world. This, of course, requires a readiness of mind and a commitment to take seriously the prophet Isaiah’s proclamation “Prepare the way of the Lord!”

Yes, you and I are God’s chosen messengers to His world. We are called to bear the Good News of God’s love for all people. It is a word about what God has done in Jesus Christ. Moreover, it is

I’m Dreaming of a Right Christmassunday, december 2 at 5 pm

About eighty youth have been practicing since September for Lord of Life’s I’m Dreaming of a Right Christmas, an original score written by Lord of Life member Stephen Fretheim and

David Frank. You are cordially invited to the musical along with dinner in Fellowship Hall following the performance. See Page 17 for the cast list. There is no charge for this event; the meal is a freewill donation. Begin your holiday season by listening to children’s voices raised in beautiful song—all are welcome. ‘Tis the season!

Christmas Oratorioby Alice Woodard, Director of Worship and LifeGARDEN

At all services during the second weekend of Advent, December 8 and 9, the Canticle Choir will present Christmas Oratorio by Camille Saint-

Saëns. The choir will be accompanied by a small string orchestra, piano, and harp. Lord of Life soloists Dana Brinton, Val Lari, Amy Cerepak, Peter Middlecamp, Deric Craig, and Joe Ellickson will be featured, and Lee Fuchs will conduct.

While Lord of Life congregation members are accustomed to hearing a major musical work at this time of year, an oratorio may seem unusual. But if you have ever heard Handel’s Messiah you have heard an oratorio. Oratorio is similar to opera in that it tells a story and features individuals as soloists and in groups as duets, trios, quartets, quintets, and as a chorus. But an oratorio is almost always composed around a sacred, rather than secular, theme. In this case the story begins with the angel’s announcement to the shepherds of the birth of Christ, continues with reflections on Christ’s glory, and concludes with a chorus of praise.

Camille Saint-Saëns was a French composer who lived from 1835 to 1921 and is well known for his composition The Carnival of the Animals. He wrote Christmas Oratorio in 1858, finishing it shortly before its premiere on Christmas that year. Saint-Saëns was considered the greatest organist in the world, was the earliest-born pianist ever to make recordings, and was the first composer to write a musical score to a motion picture.

also a word about what God will do. In Ephesians 1:9, 10 Paul has

this to say: “God has made known to us in all wisdom and insight the mystery of His

will, according to His purpose which He set forth in Christ

Jesus, as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in Him,

things in heaven and earth.”

What a wonderful, glorious vision Paul offers us! It’s more than just the same “old hat.” It’s a Living—Breathing—

Vibrantly Alive—kind of message! Taken to heart, it has power to change hearts and minds. It is this kind of

transformation that Advent and Christmas are all about. This Most Wonderful Time of the Year offers us happiness and hope in a future which is guaranteed to us in Jesus Christ. May you have happiness and hope this season!

Peace,

Pastor David

Advent—The Season of Preparationby Lynn Leisen, Faith in the Home

Advent is the season of preparation before Christmas. The word “advent” means coming. An advent wreath is an old tradition which reminds us that the Christ Child is coming. There are four Sundays in Advent and four candles on the wreath.

Oftentimes there is a large-pillar candle in the middle of the wreath. This ‘Christ Candle’ is lit on Christmas. Here are readings and songs to accompany your advent wreath lighting:

first sunday— december 2Prophecy Candle: We light this candle to remind us of something wonderful coming into the world and into our lives. Jesus is called the light of the world. The prophets told of the coming of the Savior.

Scripture: Isaiah 9:2-7

Hymn: O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

second sunday— december 9Bethlehem Candle: We light the second candle and remember that Joseph and Mary journeyed to Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. They searched for a room where they could spend the night. Let us make room for the needs of others.

Scripture: John 3:16-21

Hymn: O, Little Town of Bethlehem

third sunday—december 16Shepherds’ Candle: We light the third candle to remind us of the shepherds who first heard the Good News. They listened and then went to find the Baby Jesus. They returned to share the Good News.

Scripture: Luke 2:8-12

Hymn: The First Noël

fourth sunday—december 23Angels’ Candle: We light the fourth candle to remind us of the message the angels brought to the shepherds. It was a song of joy proclaiming the best news that had ever been given.

Scripture: Luke 2:13-14

Hymn: Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

christmas eve, december 24 or christmas day, december 25The Christ Candle: We light the center candle to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

Christ is born! Let us rejoice! Welcome Jesus with heart and voice! It is Christmas!

Scripture: Luke 2:1-20 Hymn: Joy to the World

Prayer: O God, as we give thanks for the coming of Jesus, help us to remember your love for all people, and help us to find room for you in our hearts. Amen.

A God (Holy Spirit) Momentby Diane Marx and Nancy Carlson

Diane and Rob Marx’s daughter, Elizabeth married Hunter Darth in July 2011 and is now mom to Madison Darth, age 10. Madison’s mom died years ago. Nancy Carlson (Diane and Nancy are sisters) was ordained as a pastor in 2010;

she and Pastor Peter officiated at Elizabeth & Hunter’s wedding.

Madison is very spiritual, especially for someone her age. Madison helps teach Sunday School. Grandma Di and Madison have prayed together (sometimes even over the phone). Madison loves to have “God talk” with Nancy and really likes it when Nancy wears her pastor collar for these conversations, even if they’re on the deck! Madison has called Nancy many times wanting to talk about spiritual things and then they end their conversation with prayer.

Madison would often say, “Hey, Great Aunt Pastor Nancy—when are you going to baptize me? I really want to be baptized and I want to be baptized in a lake!” So on Sunday, September 9, plans were made for Nancy to baptize Madison in French Lake at 1 pm. It was a beautiful, calm day. At exactly 1 pm there was a wind storm that went only through our group. Napkins, cards, leaves and programs went flying and everyone’s hair was whirling about. And as fast as it came, it was gone. We all gasped and Di looked at Nancy and said, “Wow! What was that?” And Nancy said, “It was the Holy Spirit!”

Before she was baptized, Madison spread her mom’s ashes in the lake. It was a lovely, calm, quiet day when Madison went out. There were many tears shed as she carefully spread her mother’s remains in the lake.

Then, Nancy baptized Madison in the lake. Because of the drought, there was not much water, but there was enough for Nancy to baptize Madison in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Madison was excited to receive the promises of baptism which are: forgiveness of sins, the promise of eternal life, and deliverance from death and the devil. What a God-Jesus-Holy Spirit-filled day!

Health & Wellness—

Faithfully Fit!by Beth Kanthak

No one can deny that exercise and eating healthy is good for us, but have you stopped to think about your spiritual health? How are you building your ‘spiritual’ muscles? If comparing physical exercise to spiritual exercise…there are similar components. Just as exercise depends on frequency, intensity, and duration—so does our spiritual life.

Just as the body benefits from consistent exercise and eating healthy foods, our relationship with Christ will benefit if we consistently spend time with Him…don’t limit your spiritual exercise to 1x/week on Sundays.

As in 1 Timothy 4:7b-8: “Train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” Transformation will happen when you consistently do the right thing and consistently do good works, which applies to your physical health and your spiritual health. With the holiday season upon us or just as you encounter life’s challenges, choose to be healthy…physically healthy AND spiritually healthy—God is your strength! Commit to exercising daily with the Lord…no spiritual flabbiness, please, be active for the purpose of godliness!

Stay tuned for more health & wellness information in LifeTIMES from Adult Ministry Leader Beth Kanthak. Questions? Feel free to contact her at [email protected].

You must learn to be still in the midst of activity and to be

vibrantly alive in repose. —Indira Gandhi

Open to the Moments of Graceby Carol James

This quote from Indira Gandhi evokes so many responses in me. I think of how easy it is to let chaos around us cause chaos within us. A messy desk, a large noisy crowd, the phone ringing endlessly...all of these can cause our minds to churn.

And then, when there is a quiet moment, how easy it is to let our minds drift into the void, grateful for the solitude, mind dulled even to our own thoughts. What a waste of a precious opportunity to recognize all of the wonderful and interesting things that are happening right before us. In the busy holiday season that we are about to enter, it is especially easy to set ourselves on autopilot, focusing only on our to-do lists, and in doing so, miss the joys and wonder of the day.

To me, the quote is about paying attention. It is about recognizing the moment and place where you are, and whether in activity or repose, being intentional and open to the moments of grace and insight that we might otherwise miss. In their book, Spiritual Literacy, Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat describe it this way: God is in the details. Paying attention requires discipline and practice. To be attentive, we must put ourselves in a place where we are open and receptive and totally present. Ask yourself in the morning, What will my attention bring me today? Be prepared to look long and steadily at things. They will speak to you and reveal themselves. And what about that to-do list? I would suggest that no matter how busy we are, each of us needs some time away from lists and jobs and problems and even family and friends. We need time to withdraw from the problems that will not withdraw from us, as Maya Angelou so gracefully phrased it. You could call it a personal retreat, whether you actually go to a place away, or sit on a park bench, or walk in the woods, or relax in your favorite comfy chair. By stepping away for a time, you are not shirking your duties, but rather preparing yourself to more ably accomplish the tasks and obligations of your daily life. You will find your energy restored and your spirit renewed. You will be ready to tackle that list, and whatever else comes your way.

I want to share this beautiful poem by John Greenleaf Whittier. He wrote it to describe the solace and peace he found in his Quaker meetinghouse, but I believe it also beautifully expresses the joy and rewards of being attentive whenever and wherever we make the effort to do so.

“From the Prairie” Winter 2007-8 Article reprinted with permission from Carol James, Executive Director of Mount Olivet Conference & Retreat Center in Farmington, Minnesota.

And so I find it well to come

For deeper rest to this still room

For here the habit of the soul

Feels less the outer world’s control.

The strength of mutual purpose pleads

More earnestly our common needs;

And from the stillness multiplied

By these still forms on either side,

The world that time and sense have known

Falls off and leaves us God alone.

—John Greenleaf Whittier

Thank you to Molly Jahn for sharing with her Lord of Life family of faith this beautiful wintry prairie painting.

Clothes, Volunteers, and Lots of Love…by Sandy Munson, Lutheran Social Service (LSS) Adult Ministry Leader

Those three things were the main parts of the Children’s Clothing Store at Lutheran Social Service on Saturday, October 13. The clothes were the wonderful donations of

gently used and new children’s clothes so many of you graciously gave for the sale. The volunteers were the amazing Word for Women ladies who sorted and bagged all those great clothes for our relatively simple transport and set-up at the Center for Changing Lives (CFCL) at 24th and Park in south Minneapolis. More volunteers were present late Friday morning to move all those huge and heavy bags to the CFCL and place the clothes neatly in piles and rows on the long rectangular tables set up for us, ready for the shoppers on Saturday. Add some colorful mylar balloons, bright signs showing the sizes on each table and pricing of the clothes, and we were ready for Saturday morning.

On Saturday, Linda Zwick, our volunteers, and I arrived at 8 am. We were greeted by the big smiles of many shoppers, patiently waiting to get in to shop starting at 9 am. Over the next four hours 75 families, with their invitations from a variety of departments or partners of Lutheran Social Service, came to shop for clothes for their children. With a total of 215 children between them the clothes flew off the tables, accompanied by excited chatter, laughter, and lots of smiles. The shoppers represented people in the community who are low-income Hispanic, Somali, African-American and Caucasian. Many were new immigrants to the US, some “Grandparents Raising Grandkids” (one of the LSS programs), and many who were on welfare and living in LSS–sponsored housing. The volunteers again made a huge difference, as shoppers talked about how they liked to shop at our sale because everyone was so friendly, the clothes were so nice, and the place was safe and pleasant—a successful experience for all.

Lots of love, oh yes. The shoppers could feel the level of respect our volunteers showed them, giving them the dignity of providing for their families at a cost they can afford. Many of the volunteers expressed what a great time they had, and that they would like to do this again next year. I hope you all remember, because we expect to have a repeat next fall. So if you have children, infants through high school, stick those outgrown fall and winter clothes away in the spring. We will welcome them with open arms next fall and look forward to saying thank you again, following another successful Children’s Clothing Sale.

Thank you all for making a difference in the lives of some wonderful people in need, and helping us give them a feeling of being able to provide for their families. The joy on the face of a child, clutching a free book as he or she left, was priceless. Their very own book to take home and read!

Thank you, Lord of Life, for your display of love and support to our brothers and sisters in need.

Sculpture and Swedish Artby Joan Holmes

The OWLs rode to St. Peter, Minnesota and Gustavus Adolphus College, arriving in time for a healing prayer service in Christ Chapel led by Re:Vive, a group of student musicians and singers. The OWLs heard about the history of Gustavus and its

beautiful Christ Chapel, about Paul Granlund, sculptor-in-residence from 1971-1996, and about the tornado which devastated the campus and town in 1998. Walking in a light mist, they visited Sesquicentennial Plaza, which had recently been dedicated by the King and Queen of Sweden, viewing several of the statues in the chapel and the plaza. The OWLs enjoyed a delicious lunch of chicken salad, fresh fruit and apple crisp in the President’s Dining Room.

Following lunch they visited the Hillstrom Museum of Art to view 150 Years of Swedish Art, a collection from galleries in Sweden brought to Gustavus for its sesquicentennial. Some of these wonderful paintings ranging from the 1800s to modern day had never been outside the country of Sweden. The OWLs stopped in Belle Plaine at Emma Krumbee’s to see a collection of 100 scarecrows and, for some, to have pie and coffee, and back to Lord of Life after a tiring but interesting day.

Faith, Food, and Fellowship with the OWLs on October 4—

Destinations Around the Worldby Joyce Martin

What is your ultimate vacation destination? With the guidance of experienced world traveler, Jennifer Czerniak, the OWLs enjoyed seeing glimpses of such destinations as:

• Alaska which showcases half the world’s glaciers

• Galapagos Islands where three different ocean currents converge

• Venice, Italy with 118 islands and 400 foot bridges

• Dubai where old meets new at the Mall of Emirates with an inside ski resort and the manmade palm leaf Jumeirah

• Beijing, China with its 5,500 mile long Great Wall of China

The OWLs enjoyed good fellowship, coffee and treats from around the world: Swedish Almond Cake, Norwegian Krumkake and Lefse, Danish Apple Pastry, French Palmiers, German Chocolate Cake, Russian Tea Cakes and American Brownies.

A Paul Granlund sculpture is in the intercessory prayer area of Lord of Life’s sanctuary.

adultHelp Their Neighborsby Michelle Waldron

Ed and Jayne are a wonderful elderly (80 years old) couple we met on our Acts 29 mission trip this past summer. They live in South Dakota. At their church they heard about a

mission trip that the youth had taken to Hope Village in Minot, North Dakota. Ed and Jayne felt called to help their neighbors to the north. They tried to get other adults from their congregation to join them, but no one was interested. So Ed and Jayne came on their own. They worked alongside our group and shared meals with us. We felt honored to present them with a Lord of Life prayer shawl (see photo). As you can read from their letter, they did a presentation at their church and are hoping to get other people to join them on another trip. Please pray that volunteers will continue to come to Hope Village to help with the rebuilding in Minot.

We also pray that each of you is open to where God is calling you to serve and that you will answer “YES” to His call.

adultDoes Any Of This Really Matter?

by Pastor Dave McCarty

As I’ve traveled my journey through seminary and discerned my call at Lord of Life as Pastor of Outreach and Mission I asked myself that question and have come back with a resounding—YES! I think that the ministry Lord of Life is doing in our community and around the world matters

A LOT!! This is true whether we’re sharing the love of Jesus with a child who later dies of cancer, or providing dental care in a region that previously had never seen a dentist. I’ve asked Phil Leith, who is preparing to serve in Jamaica for the 13th time, to share why he cares so much about what Lord of Life is doing in that country. Then I asked Dr. Amy Merrit, who will be going on her first mission trip to the Dominican Republic next month, why she’s going.

why do I care? by Phil LeithI care about the children of Westhaven Orphanage, their health, safety, and living conditions, as well as what they do for me. This spring I will be heading down to Jamaica for my 13th time. I have watched these children grow up and have seen God all over. Every year Kurleigh waits for me to arrive to get him dressed for church, sit with him in the front row, and assist him in going forward for prayer. Many times I have pushed sweet Kerry Ann up the road to church as she lies in her flat chair, all crippled, limbs bent, but singing Jesus Loves Me and praising God the whole way because she is so thankful. Then there was Marlon, pictured here in 2008, a few months before cancer finally took him home. My wife Beth and I put together a picture book for

him that he loved and took to the hospital. Along with a few other men, I made a separate trip to Jamaica in May that year to finish a roof on the new cottage. As I read to Marlon during work breaks, I thought this was definitely the work of God, putting us there that week, the last week before he went to the hospital for the final time. While reading to him and rubbing his back, he taught me courage and strength while he fought through pain. Why do I care? I want to continue to see Westhaven children grow, thrive, and have a nice, safe place to live. They keep showing me the work of God in their wonderful smiles and shouts of “Jesus!” when asked Who loves them. That means so much to me and is why I call Lord of Life’s mission trip to Jamaica my annual ‘spiritual tune-up’, and why I will continue to go as long as I am able.

why am I going?by Dr. Amy Merrit About a year ago, I was having a conversation with my husband about how I felt a need to volunteer some of my time outside the home. For the past 15 years, my time and focus has been on family and career. Within two weeks of that conversation—like a neon sign—I saw the Dentist Needed in the Service Opportunities of the worship bulletin insert. I couldn’t wait to call Paster Dave for more information. I learned the mission was serving natives in a remote mountain village in the Dominican Republic (DR). A group of dental professionals had already been formed and they needed another dentist. Even though a dental environment in a foreign country was out of my comfort zone, to help this group of dentists and to help this population fulfill their needs had become a new focus.

From taking care of my family and practice responsibilities when I will be gone, to finding dental supply donations—all the pieces in planning are coming together so easily. At one of the planning meetings, I saw pictures from past trips to the DR (like the one above). What touched me the most were the smiles on the faces of the people being served. This trip is now just a couple months away and I can’t wait to feel the satisfaction of helping and seeing the smiles first-hand.

The impact these two missionaries will have during their trips is unimaginable, through them God will make a difference that really matters. A LOT!! —Pastor Dave

1978 Lord of Life Lutheran Church Charter (ELCA)

Lord of Life is a community of people called together by God’s Holy Spirit who confess Christ as Lord. We wish to be a church whose door is open to all people. And with the guidance of the Holy Spirit we will strive to educate, comfort, aid and spread the word of love in Christ’s name. We believe worship is of most importance in our life together as we receive God’s love through Word and Sacrament. We will be involved with seeking justice in our community, state, nation and world. We hold high the dignity and worth of every human being as created in God’s image and forgiven in Christ. We hope to be a serving church, in the name of Him who came as Servant of all.
