understand this sport. I think it’s futile and a waste of my time. In all honesty, I hate football.”

At least that is pretty much what I thought until October 1, 2009. I will never forget that day. It was a dreary, cold, and rainy day when I chose to stay home from work. Some glad morning, when this life is o’er, I’ll fly away. To a home on God’s celestial shore, I’ll fly away. I’ll fly away, oh glory, I’ll fly

away. When I die, hallelujah bye and bye I’ll fly away.

When the shadows of this life are o’er, I’ll fly away. Like a bird from prison bars has flown, I’ll fly away. I’ll fly away, oh glory, I’ll fly away. When I die, hallelujah bye and bye I’ll fly away.

Congratulations and God’s continued blessings to Pastor David Howard McCarty,

Outreach and Mission for Lord of Life, shown here on the day of his ordination—

September 9, 2012.

Every Vocation is Equally HolyA few weeks ago at Lord of Life we had an ordination service for

Dave McCarty. It was a wonderful occasion. A great gathering of people including our Minneapolis Area Synod Bishop, many other pastors and

rostered personnel, family and friends. We laid hands on Dave, prayed over him and a stole was placed on his shoulders that designated him a Pastor of Word and Sacrament in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. It was a meaningful and joyous day.

The celebration of ordination, however, can make us think that it is only the pastors who do important work. That is not good Lutheran theology. Martin Luther taught and we affirm “the priesthood of all believers.” That phrase means that ALL of us have important roles to play in the life of the church. In our own way we are all priests or pastors.

Paul writes in Romans 12: For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us.

Each of us has received unique talents that God encourages us to use. So while the pastor’s role is more visible, it is not more important in God’s eyes than any other. Every vocation is equally holy. Whether you are a teacher, an electrician, an engineer, a Mom, a Dad, or a nurse, God values your time when you are doing the work for which you were created.

We will often commission a group that is taking a mission trip to another state or even a foreign country, but perhaps we should also invite CPA’s in front of the church for prayers on April 1st to help them get through their busy season.

The ordination of a pastor is a big deal for the church. But God is just as happy when you find work that fulfills your gifts and serves His purposes. Because every vocation is equally holy.

Christian Life GroupsChristian Life groups offer you the

opportunity to study God’s Word, serve and support others and to connect socially with

other Lord of Life members.

For the past few years, Lord of Life has had many small groups that meet together to study God’s word. These groups are continuing this year. Most of the groups will be using the weekly scripture readings and the sermon as the basis for their studies. The weekly scriptures will be from the narrative lectionary which provides a chronological walk through the Bible. Studying God’s Word in a small group may be a great way for you to learn.

The mission statement for Christian Life groups is “To grow in faith and to serve in love.” They often participate in a service project or help each other find ways to serve. Along with studying and serving, the group members get to know each other well; they provide support for each other. Many groups also have social gatherings, picnics, and parties. If you would like to join an existing group or start a new one, please contact Merle and Michelle Waldron at 763.420.5388 or [email protected].

Celebrate RecoveryEach week on Tuesdays at Lord of Life

about 70 people gather at Celebrate Recovery. One of the recurring questions

we receive is “can I come if I am not addicted to anything?” YES…most of the people who attend weekly are not addicted to anything. They may love someone who is struggling with an addiction, but most of them come because they have a hurt, habit or hang-up that is keeping them from experiencing God’s love; it is interfering with their relationships with others. So what exactly is a hurt, habit or hang-up?

• Hurts: The feeling of being hurt is an emotional reaction to another person’s behavior, or to a disturbing situation (abandonment, co-dependency, job loss, divorce or relationship issues).

• Habits: A habit is an addiction to someone or something (food, gambling, sex, shopping, relationships, pornography, abuse, smoking, money, alcohol or drugs).

• Hang-ups: Negative mental attitudes that are used to cope with people or adversity (anger, depression, unforgiveness).

Come and let those who have been on the path a while, walk alongside you. You will be pleasantly surprised to learn you are not alone and that there is hope. Celebrate Recovery meets every Tuesday beginning with dinner at 6 pm. For jr. and sr. high youth there is the landing; Celebration Station for elementary children at the same time, with childcare available for younger children. Questions? Contact Michelle Welinski. For more information, visit lordoflife.org/celebraterecovery.

Inspired ImagesInspired Images is Lord of Life’s stamping and

scrapbooking ministry that typically meets twice a month with a focus on service and fellowship.

You are invited on Saturday, October 13 from 9 am-12 pm to work on projects for Lord of Life ministries. New this year is a field trip scheduled for Saturday, October 27, from 8 am-6 pm. We will take a Ziplet (one of the smaller black buses) and tour a few stamping/scrapbooking/crafting stores in the area. It promises to be a great time! Inspired Images’ entire fall schedule along with registration for the field trip is at lordoflife.org/inspiredimages.

all work to prepare the ground and plant, there is always such a great feeling of expectation and the fact that we made it through another Minnesota winter.” JoAnn agrees, “While we are out there we make connections with people and share our love of gardening, of giving to others and perhaps share our hearts, our struggles, and our prayers with one another.”

Gardeners look out for one another, as well. This year when one gardener broke her ankle, others helped out in her plot. Another gardener had to be away to deal with family issues, so neighboring plot holders watered her plot. Some gardeners just want to make sure their produce is picked and used: “Hey, I’m going to be on vacation next week—help yourself to the beans in my plot.”

In addition to the benefits of working together toward a common goal, forming new friendships, and mutual support, LifeGARDEN is an act of stewardship. When Lord of Life’s building was constructed in 2001, it was built on land originally owned by charter members Ed and Neoma Bather. They farmed this land and grew sweet corn, which their children sold to help pay their college expenses. Many locals still remember that roadside stand at the corner of Bass Lake Road and County Road 101. LifeGARDEN continues that legacy as this land is again used to produce food. While individuals and families maintain their plots and produce food for their own use, everyone contributes to the effort of the communal fields, growing food for those in greater need.

Every gardener knows that despite all their efforts, the end result is always in God’s hands. JoAnn expressed it well: “We are all wanting peace on this planet, and we cannot control that issue very well, but we can bring peace and make a difference in our little spot on the planet by taking good care of the resources (the land and the garden) we have been given to bless others.”

Find Jesus, Find Healingby Pastoral Associate Karen Greimel

The African bishop Saint Augustine once wrote, “Thou hast made us for Thyself, and the heart of man is restless until it finds its rest in Thee.” Whether or not we are

in touch with our need for God, He is the only one who can truly heal and fill us completely. Frequently it’s in the times of our greatest need, the death of a loved one, illness, grief or suffering, that we become aware of our need for Jesus. Our pain brings us face-to-face with who we really believe Jesus to be, what He has done for us and where we can find Him is in all of this.

“I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:36) We were created to find our healing and nourishment in God. For example, when we don’t eat our bodies become weak and we are unable to live whole and healthy lives. Add to that stress or illness and things get real bad, real fast. The same is true for us spiritually. When we are not eating the bread of life that Jesus offers by spending time in prayer, worship or reading the Bible, we do not have all that God desires for us. We become weak and are in need of God’s healing nourishment. It’s when we find Jesus that we find healing and become strong, healthy and nourished. Are you in need of healing? Do you know Jesus?

If you have questions about Lord of Life’s Healing Ministry or to schedule an individual prayer appointment, please contact Pastoral Associate Karen Greimel. The next healing service will be October 15 at 6:30 pm in Lord of Life’s Prayer Room.

Serve the Lord with Gladnessby Alice Woodard, Associate in Ministry

Occasionally people ask me about how all the aspects of the worship service come together. There seem to be lots of people involved—some greeting, some reading lessons, some serving communion, some collecting offering and ushering worshipers forward for communion. And then there are things that happen before and after worship

that most people don’t see or know about—cleaning and restocking the pews, setting out wine/wafers for communion and putting everything away afterward, cleaning the baptismal font, and lighting the candles. Sometimes new banners and altar cloths appear. How do all of these jobs get done? The answer is from many dedicated volunteers, and YOU can be one. There are many ways to serve, either behind the scenes or literally up in front.

1. Worship Teams consist of greeters, ushers, readers, communion servers. They serve at one worship service each month. Training is provided.

2. Altar Team is a group of people who prepare for communion and baptisms. They serve for a month at a time a couple of times a year. Training is provided.

3. Liturgical Arts shares ideas about how visual arts may be used to enhance worship experiences. Meeting every other month, you are invited to the next meeting, October 15 at 7 pm.

4. Pew preparers tidy pews, restock envelopes/cards in the pew pockets. This is done weekly at your convenience.Though each of these tasks may sound insignificant on its own, it is crucial for our ongoing worship program and a very important ministry in the life of the church. If you would like to participate in any of these, please contact me.

The Lord is close to the broken hearted and saves

those who are crushed in Spirit. Psalm 34:18

Grief Share is a Safe Placeby Pastoral Associate Karen Greimel

It’s true that times of heartbreak and grief can be times of the greatest loneliness. It’s also true that some of the deepest hurts can be the most difficult to express. The

lament of Psalm 34:18 reminds us that the Lord is near, He will never leave us or forsake us. How do we experience this promise when steeped in the depth of great loss?

Stop and ask God to show you how. Then be open to what he will do. It could be as simple as giving yourself grace. I remember when my mom died, my memory disappeared. It’s as if I lost my mind. I forgot little things like my kids’ dentist appointments, paying bills, and my best friend’s birthday. I needed grace from my family, my friends and most of all from myself. It took my desperate prayers to God for me to see that His grace is sufficient. This enabled me to give myself grace during this time of grieving. I felt God’s presence and comfort as together we walked through this.

Remember you are never alone in your suffering. Maybe God is leading you to join a Grief Share group. Grief Share is a safe place for you to walk through this time in your life. You will learn healthy ways to navigate through and live with grief. You are invited for dinner on Tuesdays at 6-6:30 pm with our Celebrate Recovery friends and/or meet with the Grief Share small group from 6:45-8:15 pm. For more information, please contact Pastoral Associate Karen Greimel or Michelle Welinski or visit lordoflife.org/griefshare.

The Lord has heard my cry for mercy; the Lord

Prayer WallsWe have been blessed with two beautiful

prayer walls that were lovingly built by our own Ken Carraux. One is located in the

Prayer Room and the other in The Gathering.

The prayer wall, sometimes referred to as the “Wailing Wall,” originates in Jerusalem where each day thousands continue to bring their prayers before God in writing. You are invited to write out your prayers and place them in the wall being confident that God hears all the prayers of His people. The prayers placed in this wall will be covered in prayer daily. God receives our prayers as precious jewels. Remember the words of Max Lucado, “Actions in heaven begin when someone prays on earth.”

For more information about the prayer wall, scheduling a prayer appointment or Lord of Life’s Healing Ministry, please contact Pastoral Associate Karen Greimel. Healing services for 2012 are scheduled for 6:30 pm on October 15, November 19, and December 17 in Lord of Life’s Prayer Room.

Word for WomenIn the Book of Nehemiah, God used a whole variety

of ordinary people, people like you and me, to do remarkable things. When they all worked together

as a community, as a team, amazing things happened. Wednesday mornings from 9:30-11 am, Word for Women encourages women in their Christian faith through the study of the Word, along with prayer support, fellowship and service. Word for Women offers weekly gatherings for women of all ages interested in developing their personal faith, supporting each other, and serving together. All women—both members and nonmembers—are

invited to explore faith through the Bible and other fun and interesting media. The format includes large group teaching, followed by small group discussions. Each week, the group celebrates with hospitality time, worship time, highlights of service opportunities or testimony. You are invited to join in! Questions? Contact Karen Nelson or Jane Bergstrom.

One Tomato PlantThis year I bought one tomato plant so that I could have a few small tomatoes

for a salad each week. I expected to pick about a half a dozen a week at most. I watered the plant and I waited expectantly for the sweet red fruit to come.

The first time I went to pick the ripe tomatoes I brought a small bowl. It was filled to overflowing. I took a small bag of tomatoes to work to share. The second time I went out to pick, about a week later, I filled a mixing bowl. I took three bags to work to share.

Not even a week later, I picked two mixing bowls full. This time I brought an ice cream container of fruit to share. My tomato plant continued to bear an abundance of tomatoes right up until a hard frost came in October. As I thought about my expectations and the reality of the harvest I realized that this was a wonderful example of God’s abundant blessings. God gave far beyond my hopes. The more I shared with others, the more that this plant seemed to produce.

How like God’s love was this abundance. The more we share of God’s love and blessings the more God gives us to share. Whether that be through words of witness to God’s love for us or gifts of material wealth, God blesses all we share and never forgets to rain down upon us continued love and gifts to sustain us in our existence on this earth.

if it was a metaphor or a foreshadowing of what was about to happen to me. Life can sometimes be like the weather: you can’t always predict what is about to happen and it can change suddenly!

Then the phone rang. My hand was frozen over the receiver and all I heard were these words: “I’m so sorry, it’s cancer. You have had it for a year maybe two...perhaps consider an aggressive treatment.” Suddenly, the curtains closed in front of my eyes and my world went black. Just exactly like the weather outside.

Feeling like I was given a death sentence, I wailed like a wounded animal before calling my husband. I knew I needed to be calm and strong but just couldn’t manage to pull myself together. My husband and I waited for our children to come home from school to give them the news. I felt guilty as a parent knowing that what I was about to tell them would change their lives forever. You want to protect your children—not hurt them. Children shouldn’t have to worry about their parents either. That’s my job, too.

I felt I had cried as many tears as there were raindrops outside. I was emotionally

exhausted. I knew I needed to mourn my diagnosis and yet be mentally strong. I didn’t have time for anger or denial. It is what it is. I had to accept my fate and begin this uncharted territory of my journey.

That night from exhaustion, I fell asleep on the family room couch. In the middle of the night, my eyes suddenly opened wide, starring into the black night. “Oh my God, it’s not a dream. I do have cancer!”

I sat on the couch alone, consumed in fear and watched the world around me give birth to a new day.

The following days were a blur; I had so many unanswered questions. Filled with anxiety and fear, everything still seemed so surreal to me. I continued to work, trying to pretend I was living a double life. I never believed in mixing my professional life with my personal life. So whatever upheaval I was living, I left it at home and work became my haven. I knew this was temporary and eventually I would have to deliver the news. I just needed more time and information first. By the end of the week, I had attended a book signing event of a cancer survivor and went to my first Women’s

Cancer Support Ministry meeting at Lord of Life.

I spent most of my October researching my cancer and finding the best doctors my insurance could buy. I was terrified. I had so many questions. I didn’t want to know any of this but felt I needed to know. I had to face fear in the eyes. I needed to inform myself because knowledge is power. The more I knew, the better decisions I could make about my treatment plan.

By the end of October, I had most of my questions answered. I had hired a small military of doctors and surgeons to prepare and begin the arsenal attack on my breast cancer. I was ready to fight. I met my oncologist for the first time. I prepared myself that more than likely I would lose one breast. After receiving the news and statistics of reoccurrence, it was highly recommended to have a double mastectomy. I felt it was the sacrifice I needed to make in order to save my life and prevent it from ever coming back again.

During the midst of all this, a friend of mine and a great woman of faith was going

through some personal problems herself. She told me that it was out of her control and she was leaving it in God’s hands. She went on to tell me that her faith would guide her through it. I knew God placed me with this encounter for a reason. This was my epiphany. My message was loud and clear:

Let God take control of what I cannot change. Let Him guide and bless me with strength, courage, hope, grace and peace. He has placed me in this journey for a reason. Be patient and the message will soon become clear.

I will always remember that day of my surgery. When my name was called by the nurse for pre-op, I felt I was not walking alone—God was right there guiding me along. It was the first time since my diagnosis that I felt fearless and at peace. At that point, I knew I was going to be ok, and I left it all in God’s hands.

The years 2009 and 2010 were a true test of my faith. I had undergone 8 treatments of traditional chemotherapy and 32 radiation treatments. I lost my hair and had a total of five surgeries. I will continue to be on medication

What do Steve

Young, Jim

McMahon, and

Tony Dungy have in

common? They were all

coached by Roger French—

Meet the Coach Lord of Life is blessed to have in their

midst a legend in football coaching, Roger French. Humble and soft-

spoken, Coach French is a football lifer. He was a three-year letter winner with the Minnesota Gophers, graduating in 1952, then a graduate assistant to Bernie Berman. He spent ten years at the University of Memphis—with their defense ranked #2 in the nation, and four years at the University of Wisconsin as defensive coordinator, returning to the University of Minnesota as the offensive line and receiver’s coach from 1970-78. After a year in Northern Iowa, Coach French went to Brigham Young University where he spent 20 seasons as the offensive coordinator and line coach—they won the National Championship in 1984. He also had stints with the Canadian Football League and the NFL Europe. On returning to the US, he assisted at Bloomington Kennedy, Maple Grove, Patrick Henry and Minnetonka High Schools. He is in the Minnesota State Football Coaches Hall of Fame and was inducted in the BYU Hall of Fame in 2004. He has coached 19 All-Americans as well as the likes of Steve Young, Ty Detmer, Jim McMahon, Andy Reid, Tony Dungy, Bart Oaks along with more than 50 other NFL players. Roger is married to Dody (they just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary!), and they

have two adult children, Kathy and Gail. His hobbies include spending time with his family, and football, of course.

for another four years. And yet never once did I question God or ask, “Why me?” I never asked to join the pink ribbon club. I didn’t even have a choice in the matter.

It was a scary time but also the most humbling experience ever. The outpouring of support received from people in my neighborhood, work, community, family, friends, and even acquaintances was overwhelming. They blessed me with gifts and cards, dinners, taking my dog and I on daily walks, visits, words of kindness and encouragement, and prayers—even a hug was a gift.

People that I never knew or met were praying for me—the power of prayer was one of the greatest gifts I could have ever received. More friendships were made because of this. Other friendships were made from former acquaintances of women who were now going through breast cancer themselves. The bonds we now have together are indescribable. A church in northern Minnesota reached out to me as their Women’s Guild sent me turbans and a chemo pillow. Another member also sent me a beautiful pink ribbon necklace. A stranger I met at my son’s basketball game mailed me a necklace of Saint Peregrine, the patron saint of cancer patients. Being a former Catholic, I was touched by her beautiful gesture.

It wasn’t the gifts as much as the meaning behind all of these that meant so much to me. I was overwhelmed at the thought that I obviously meant enough to these people to deserve their time and energy. I never realized I was loved by so many people. It truly restored my faith in humanity. Because of this, I never knew what kind of miracle I would encounter every day. What I did realize was that these

were all Christian people. They were doing what makes God happy. They were all serving people in need. And one of them was me.

My message became clear. I received my calling when the Women’s Cancer Support Ministry was in need of another co-leader. It was my time to pay it forward to become a servant of God. I would love to welcome anyone in need or would like to talk, to call me or attend our monthly meetings. This October 1st commemorates my three years of survivorship and ironically this month celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness month. I am now cancer free.

That day when I got hit by the football was a miracle. I thank God, my son, and football. Instead of going shopping this season I will be sitting on the couch with my husband and son watching the football games.

I love football.

Soft OlympicsOn August 2 upon the arrival of the torch—laughter and

cheers rang out during the OWLs “Soft Olympics” as each OWLympian participated in such games as balloon volleyball,

cone on a string, cotton ball relay, Jenga™, etc. In British tradition, the OWLs feasted on fish and chips along with mushy peas as well as deep-fried candy bars for dessert. At 80+ years, Ed Hatlem was awarded the gold medal for his full participation.

Target Field TourOn August 16 the OWLs enjoyed a two-

hour tour of Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins. They visited the

Champion’s, Legends and Metropolitan clubs, Budweiser Roof Plaza and sat in a private booth and the press box as their very informative, excellent guide entertained them with facts about the building and its facilities, the history of the Twins organization and stories about the favorite players who played for the club. It was fun to see cabinets, scattered throughout the building, holding many artifacts belonging to Hall of Fame players such as Kirby Puckett’s Golden Glove, Zoilo’s World Series ring, bats, uniforms, and more. Target Field is loaded with artwork, statues, and photos. They visited the visitor’s locker room, sat in the dugout and went onto the warning track on the field. An amazing building, a fun tour! They then walked across the plaza to enjoy lunch at Hubert’s.

Lord of Life Lutheran—

Recently I had an opportuni ty to meet a few members of your congregation, and they have blessed, and continue to bless my life on a daily basis. I live in Minot, North Dakota, and my home was flooded. I had about 6½ feet of water on my main floor. Still, I consider this a blessing to have only 6½ feet as many homes were completely under the water. I was able to salvage my home, and we gutted, cleaned and we are rebuilding our home. This is when I had an opportuni ty to meet a few of your congregation. They were not working on my home, but on the house two houses down. They were walking past my house, looking for a bathroom (which probably would have been a tree), and I volunteered my bathroom during their work week. Having a home worked on in my neighborhood is a blessing in i tself, but when they left, they left behind a prayer shawl for my kindness...imagine that... My kindness!!! They traveled for hours and hours, and worked all week, in the heat, and they leave me a gift ! The beautiful prayer shawl has certainly blessed my life. How kind of our neighbors to reach out to us in our time of need. Prayer is the most important gift we can receive from anyone. I was taken aback by the kindness of your church to not only send working crews, but to send the gift of a prayer shawl. Thank you for your prayers, your kindness, and your love. Our God is

truly an awesome God!

In Christ,

Maryann Vollmer

The Acts 29 Mission Team had a wonderful week in Minot, North Dakota this year. As leaders of

the trip, we are continually in awe of how God touches the hearts of the team members and the hearts of the people that we meet.

We were able to show God’s love for our neighbors by helping to re-build their homes. This year we worked on five different homes. A highlight of the trip was the time that we spent getting to know each one of the homeowners. In fact, one of them has invited us back to Minot for a barbecue.

Another way that we show God’s love is by giving away prayer shawls. This year we gave out 22 shawls. The recipients are deeply touched by this gift as shown in this letter.

Why is this mission group called Acts 29? The book of Acts in the Bible is the story of the beginnings of the church. There is no Chapter 29 in the book of Acts; God’s people today are the witnesses and are still writing the story each and every day. Visit lordoflife.org/acts29 for photos and their work diary from Minot, North Dakota. Prayerfully consider joining them next summer!

Acts 29 Mission Team

One Mission One World with Mission to the Dominican Republic (M2DR)—

There is a Joy You Will Findby Joe Wenker

Are you like me and cannot figure out how the summer months could fly by so fast? Were you able to accomplish all of your

goals and attend all of the fun summer events that you noted you wanted to last May? I ask these questions as it takes planning and commitment to reach one’s goals.

And how does this relate to the Dominican Republic (DR)? Lord of Life is once again planning a short-term mission trip to the DR in January 2013. While it may seem like it is a long time from now, the time will pass by as quickly as it did this past summer. Now is the time to see if M2DR is the one where you will join us.

I have been on several trips to the DR. I go there as part of my charitable giving and volunteer goals for the year. Each year brings both new challenges and rewards. The challenges are easy. You might be assisting in a construction project, working with the women on craft projects, visiting the kids at their school. These activities are part of your daily life on the trip.

It is the rewards that will make you want to return. You will experience a joy of life by interacting with the Dominicans. Friendships are formed with our group members and within the local community. There is a joy you will find as the Dominicans love to visit, to laugh, and to spend time with us as short-term missionaries.

Have I mentioned their worship service? While it is in Spanish, the translation of love of our Lord is unmistakable. It is an absolute highlight of my mission week to gather with a very enthusiastic group of Christians to give honor, praise and thanks to the Lord.

So how can you get involved with this mission? I am glad you asked as we have a number of ways to learn more about the program. Look for us at a table in the narthex between worship services to ask questions about short-term mission trip opportunities. You may also visit lordoflife.org/onemissiononeworld to learn more about mission trips. Pray and see if your faith is calling you to participate!

This will be a great opportunity to learn about this important aspect of our church community!

Following breakfast, we head outdoors to work on a couple of service projects. About every three years, Lord of Life needs to remove the cottonwood saplings and other vegetation from the wetlands portion of our property in order to maintain the wetland areas. There is also some shrubbery work to be done around the church. With a group of friends working together in service, the work should only take a couple of hours. Please sign up for the breakfast on the bulletin board or at lordoflife.org/mensbreakfast. Questions? Contact Jane Bergstrom.

Thoughts from Tanzania: Connectionsby Katie Storlie on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at 3:13am

Connection is defined as “A relationship in which a person, thing, or idea is linked or associated with something else.” Here are some brief thoughts, ramblings, and stories about how I experienced connection in Tanzania.

We unload the bus and are swiftly lead about half a mile to the village well. On the way we find ourselves intermixed with what seems like the entire village: singing, laughing, and dancing as we walk. “We have been waiting for our guests to arrive, to celebrate in the joys of what God provides, let us welcome them.”

Standing amongst the villagers of Udewka Tanzania, I turn around with as much anticipation and excitement as those around me to see who these mentioned guests are. I am quick to realize the honored guests are my travel companions and me.

I had been in the country for 8 days at that very point, but already felt a strong sense of belonging. The hospitality that our group had been shown during our first days in Tanzania made anticipated anxiety of being in a foreign county quickly dissipate. When people welcome you into their country, home, and heart you quickly discover how connections are made and kept.

One of my biggest anxieties before arriving in Tanzania was how those connections would be made. The barriers that I was anxious about prior to the trip such as language, what we wear, living situations or what we eat all suddenly seemed so trivial. My time in Tanzania I learned an immense amount from the people and culture. Once the differences that we so often get hung up on and stop deep connections from happening are set aside, the human race is all the same at the core. We all have similar desires, needs, and wants. The connections that are made between those desires, needs, and wants is where the beauty is found. Whether that be found in dance, music, worship, or physical touch, the ability to make connections that go deep into our core are endless.

During our time spent playing with children at an orphanage in Iringa, I was able to spend time with a boy who was (I’m guessing) around the age of 13. He was sitting on the steps of a building playing a drum. Throughout my time in Tanzania, I was very intrigued by their drumming. With that curiosity, naturally I approached him. Not saying anything I sat down and received an ear-to-ear smile. I spent the first few minutes of our time together just watching his hands and the drums interacting.

All of a sudden the young boy played a short rhythm and held out the drum; I copied what he just played and we both giggled at how (well let’s just say, unnatural) it sounded. We spent the next half hour passing the drum back and forth playing different rhythms and stopping for short lessons in between. When it was time for me to leave he grabbed my hand and gave me another ear-to-ear smile. The whole time we never exchanged names or words but with music had one of the deepest connections I experienced during my time in Tanzania.

Leaving Tanzania, I experienced a different anxiety. I feared how those connections would remain rather than how they would be made. Just completing my first day back in the United States I am already feeling how the newly learned way of connecting with others is affecting me. Driving around Moorhead, Minnesota—a place I’ve known my whole life—I see and think of people in a different light. What are their needs, desires, or wants? How can I accompany those, and how are my needs, desires and wants similar to theirs? How can I remember to use ‘Tanzania’ time and really think about how my interactions with others fulfill their core and mine. Reflecting on what I learned, the connections I made while I was in Tanzania will be kept because of how they were made. The experience I had will carry through to future connections at home.

So in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. –Romans 12:5

October 2012 “For me to live is Christ” Philippians 1:21a20

Fall Release Day is back! Children in grades 1-6 are invited to a Fall Fun Day on Thursday, October 18 from 9 am-6 pm. Check-in is from 8:30-9 am and pick up is from 4:30-6 pm. Cost is $25. Please bring a lunch. We will spend the morning at Lord of Life then take buses to Minnetonka Orchards for a tour of the apple barn, visit the corn slide and barn animals, and go on a hayride. Talk to Julie Hagen if you are interested in helping as a chaperone. Register at lordoflife.org/releaseday.

Two Important Milestones The end of October will see two very important faith milestones for our young

people. Baptismal promises will be honored by parents of 3rd graders on October 27/28. Parents promised to place God’s Word into the hands of their

children at baptism. Lord of Life supports that promise by providing Bibles for the parents to present to their 3rd graders. Prior to this event, these young people and their parents attend a Bible Festival on October 13/14 to learn about God’s Word in this very important book.

On the same weekend as the presentation of Bibles, our 10th grade C3 students affirm their baptism during a service called Affirmation of Baptism (commonly called Confirmation). These young people promise to live among God’s people, hear the Word of God and share the Lord’s Supper, share the good news of God in Christ, serve all people, and strive for justice and peace in the world.

As people of God, we promise to support these young people and their parents and pray for them in their life in Christ. Please continue to keep them in your prayers.

let’s talk about bullying

Geared toward families with children from grades 2-6, Growing Families of Faith will be sponsoring a family meal (5-6 pm), an interactive presentation (6:05-7 pm), and a guest speaker. Details are being finalized now so stay tuned to lordoflife.org/gff for the date and speaker details to come.

Rally Weekend in Samaritan Hall—makes you wonder what we would have done without the wonderful new building spaces!?Church School...

...is underway and the Spirit is alive and at work in the hearts and lives of everyone involved! This year’s curriculum for children ages 3-grade 4 follows the narrative lectionary which coincides with the lessons used during worship. We hope families will incorporate the prayers, conversation questions, and service project ideas from the weekly Take Home sheet into their family schedule. And there is still room for you to be a part of the ministry team as a Large Group or Small Group leader, Hospitality Team, or Tech Team. Contact Kirstin Delp or Julie Hagen to see how you can be involved.

The Power of a Simple Gift

Over 4325 Shoe Box Gifts! Can you believe that in the year 2000 we collected our first 62

Operation Christmas Child shoe box gifts and last year we collected 825? We have given over 4325 boys and girls all over the

world the gift of our prayers, simple gifts, and Gospel storybooks that tell about the greatest gift—Jesus Christ. These boxes serve as reminders that there are people far away who love them and that there is a God who loves them and who sent Jesus Christ to be their Savior.

This year box and brochure distribution will begin October 20/21. Boxes are available until all 1000 have been distributed. After that time, please use those shoe boxes you store in your closet or purchase an inexpensive plastic shoe box. Brochures will always be available.

Follow your box around the world this year. It’s easy!

1. Pack & Pray: Fill a shoe box with toys, school supplies, and hygiene items. Pray for the child who will receive your box.

2. Give Online: Go to samaritanspurse.org/occ and fill out the Follow Your Box form. Print out the custom girl/boy label that is emailed to you and affix it to the top of your box. It only takes $7 to get a box around the world! (If you don’t care about your box’s destination, just put a check in the envelope found in the brochure and place it in your box.)

3. Drop Off Your Box: Lord of Life is collecting boxes through November 13.

4. Follow Your Box: Once your shoe box has been shipped, you will receive an email notifying you of the country destination of your box!

Parent Night OutParent Night Out is an opportunity for

parents to get out while safe childcare is provided for their children. Grab

some dinner, go shopping, or perhaps you’d rather just take a nap! Children will split up into age groups and rotate to different faith-based activities throughout the evening. A snack will be provided, however, dinner will not be served. Join us on October 5, November 2, and December 7 (first Fridays in the fall) from 6-10 pm. All children birth-6th grade are welcome. Your generous donation (suggested minimum of $10 per child) will help benefit our international mission partners.

faith formation Introducing Emily

by Heather Hjelmstad, Ministry of Inclusion and Childcare

Our staff is experienced and trained to care for your child during all worship services and many other activities for ages birth to 3 years. In order for us to

get to know you better and for you to know us better—we’re continuing to introduce childcare staff. Please let us know how we can serve you and your child better.

Hi! I’m Emily Jacobson and I am a junior at Wayzata High School. I live in Plymouth not far from Lord of Life where I volunteer each Sunday as a buddy to a child with special needs as a part of the Ministry of Inclusion. Aside from volunteering, I am a member of the cross-country and track/field teams at school. Over the summer I was a part-time nanny so I LOVE working with kids. I also attended the ELCA Youth Gathering in July in New Orleans where I grew in my faith and made life-long friends. I consider myself a positive, compassionate, and outgoing person which means I am very excited to work in the Lord of Life Childcare and spread God’s love.

Karing KingdomHappy October! The fun is

non-stop at Karing Kingdom Preschool as we continue

our Zany Zoo Escapades with lions and elephants and giraffes—oh my! Then it’s a menagerie of music and the instruments that make those sounds when we learn about “the sounds of music.” Eastman Nature Center is next in Elm Creek Park Reserve for an off-site school visit with the center’s naturalists. Last but not least we celebrate Halloween with pumpkin and party fun!

October Book Pick: Ten Little Caterpillars by Bill Martin Jr. Ten little caterpillars are out and about in our big, wide world…come and join them.

October Bible Verse: I can do all things through

Christ, because He gives me strength. Philippians 4:13

Get Acquainted Day in Karing Kingdom!

As introduced in September’s LifeTIMES, a new check-in system has been introduced at Lord of Life. This system will provide a safe

and secure method for checking children in and out; provide better attendance tracking, and print nametags. Thank you for your

patience as we all work through this new system!

1978 Lord of Life Lutheran Church Charter (ELCA)

Lord of Life is a community of people called together by God’s Holy Spirit who confess Christ as Lord. We wish to be a church whose door is open to all people. And with the guidance of the Holy Spirit we will strive to educate, comfort, aid and spread the word of love in Christ’s name. We believe worship is of most importance in our life together as we receive God’s love through Word and Sacrament. We will be involved with seeking justice in our community, state, nation and world. We hold high the dignity and worth of every human being as created in God’s image and forgiven in Christ. We hope to be a serving church, in the name of Him who came as Servant of all.
