DLetter from the President

ear Friends:“Tradition” should be a guide for moving forward rather than an

excuse to remain the same. After almost 100 years of service to Sumter and its residents, all that the Tuomey Healthcare System offers is rooted

in a tradition of compassion. Though this has remained constant, it has not made us stagnant, as we continue to grow and change in ways that make Tuomey a better place for our biggest stakeholder – the community.

With new medical breakthroughs and innovations happening every day, it is evident that science and technology revolutionize our lives, but it is tradition that enriches the human experience. This special edition of LifeTimes and the 2010 Tuomey Foundation Annual Report celebrates Tuomey’s tradition of compassion by paying tribute to the Tuomey Hospice Program, a division of the hospital that is founded on principles of compassionate medical care for terminally ill patients.

This issue also highlights Tuomey Hospice’s superb volunteer program and the people who give their hearts in service to others. Just as they were 30 years ago, when Hospice began, our hospice volunteers are the backbone of the program. For this reason it is imperative that we honor these volunteers, both past and present, and all the selfless work they do to care for others in need.

This outstanding quality of healthcare is one of our proudest achievements, but we are intent to use the tradition of compassion as a guide for making positive strides. Plans are under way to enhance the current program with the addition of a Tuomey Hospice House. With the help of The Tuomey Foundation, Tuomey Healthcare is excited to begin this important work. In this issue of LifeTimes, you will learn about what a hospice house is, what Tuomey intends to accomplish with such a facility, why there is an undeniable need for it in Sumter and how we plan to realize such an ambitious endeavor. Our hope is that you are inspired to get involved.

We are also thrilled to tell you about the exciting new things happening at The Tuomey Foundation, the philanthropic branch of Tuomey Healthcare System. Because of generous support from the community, last year saw much success, including increases in fiscal giving as well as in the number of supporters.

With such incredible community backing, the Foundation is able to continue its steadfast work to ensure that the hospital and community programs it supports continue to grow and enrich the lives of the people of Sumter. Thank you for helping us to carry on Tuomey’s tradition of compassion. Without you – our supporters – none of this would be possible.

or Tuomey employees, caring for others is not just a job. It’s a way of life. The world-class healthcare offered at Tuomey is rooted in a tradition of compassion. This is what

makes Tuomey Hospice special. “Our hospice nurses and employees are passionate patient advocates. They fight for the needs of their patients and the patients’ families, always wanting to go above and beyond the call of duty to provide the quality of care they would expect for their own loved ones,” says Kim Price, Tuomey Hospice administrative director.

Hospice care makes it possible for terminally ill patients and their families to remain together in the comfort and dignity of their homes; this enables family members to take an active role supplementing the care given by medical professionals. Hospice neither hastens nor postpones death. The goal is to treat the person, rather than the disease, by managing pain and providing solace.

The services provided by hospice are also focused on the well-being of the patient-family unit, with care delivered by an interdisciplinary team that includes the physician, a nurse, aides, a pharmacist, chaplain, social worker and trained volunteers. Specialized medical professionals such as physical, occupational and speech therapists are also involved when needed.

Every situation is different, Price says, and each situation requires multiple perspectives to provide the best possible care. And hospice can be more cost-effective for the family: The daily charges for hospice are significantly lower than hospitals. A study conducted at Duke University, using data from the 1993-2003 National Long Term Care Survey, revealed an average of $2,309 in savings per hospice user in the last year of life.

What we now understand as “hospice” began with the work of Dame Cicely Saunders. While nursing terminally ill patients in 1950s England, Saunders realized that that there

was a need for a medical system that provided specialized care to ease the dying process.

Her work to remedy this problem began the modern hospice movement when she established St. Christopher’s Hospice in London in 1967.

Still central to hospice care today, Saunders’ program had a three-point focus in easing life’s final journey: relief from pain and troublesome symptoms, the preservation of dignity and help coping with the psychological and spiritual pain of death through patient and family counseling.

Today, 90 percent of hospice care is delivered at home. There are more than 3,400 hospices nationwide. Some

are divisions of hospitals; others are independent. Some are non-profit organizations; others are for-profit businesses.

In the tri-county area alone, there are 17 hospices.“Unfortunately, not all hospice programs are equal,”

Price explains. “There is no certificate of need (requirement) in South Carolina, so anyone can open a hospice.”

Lavon Hardee, holding a portrait of his late wife, Judy, is surrounded by some of the members of his Hospice Care Team: Chaplain B.J. Drayton; director Kim Price; social worker Linda Windley; nurse Jackie Salonikis;

pharmacist Lisa Gamble; medical director, Dr. Don Dubose; and clinical manager Deree Long.

Some are all about the bottom line, with the focus on business rather than care. The number of options makes it difficult to choose the best hospice, especially during an already emotionally trying time.

Tuomey Hospice is a non-profit agency serving Sumter, Lee and Clarendon counties that began as a volunteer program 30 years ago.

“Our focus is the patients and their families and helping to ease their pain,” Price said.

“What makes us a better option than other hospices in the area is that we are local people serving local people,” she added. “Our patients are neighbors, friends and family members of friends. It is not uncommon for the patients and families we serve to have mutual friends with our nurses, aides or volunteers. That makes us feel like family.”

Tuomey’s hospice nurses are available to their patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Additionally, while most of the hospices in the area are part of a national chain, Tuomey Hospice is local. It supports Sumter area businesses, including a local pharmacy and medical equipment provider, when providing patients with what they need.

Something new and unique to Tuomey is that its Hospice Medical Director, Dr. Don DuBose, is making home visits.

Medicare requires patients to have face-to-face visits with a physician prior to entering their third benefit period and every 60 days after that, primarily to verify that the patient continues to meet the criteria for receiving hospice care.

“Dr. DuBose would rather see the patients in the comfort of their homes rather than make them come to his

office,” says Deree Long, Tuomey’s hospice clinical manager. “He really enjoys his time with the patients and their families in such an intimate and personal setting.”

It is often said that we can measure our lives by the relationships we make along the way. At Tuomey Hospice, it is clear that the relationships we make in our final moments are just as important as any other. After Judy Hardee -- a loving wife, mother and grandmother -- was diagnosed with ALS, the time came when she needed hospice care. Like many families faced with this difficult decision, Mrs. Hardee and her husband of 51 years, Lavon Hardee, were unsure what

hospice meant. “We were reluctant at first. We had the misconception that hospice is a last resort,” admits Mr. Hardee. After speaking with some Tuomey Hospice employees, they came to understand what hospice could offer them. “No other hospice group could have benefitted my family more,” he says now.

Family always came first for his wife. “Judy spent her life taking care of others. She was our family’s beacon,” he said. “That’s why it meant so much that Tuomey’s hospice team treated us like family. They adopted Judy.”

“Because of the compassionate care and attention they gave Judy, we were better able to enjoy the time we had left together,” Mr. Hardee says. “They always seemed to know what Judy needed. If it was spiritual comfort, the chaplain showed up. If it was physical comfort, the nurse showed up.”

Hardee was so moved by the compassionate care Tuomey Hospice provided him and his wife that he asked the Tuomey Hospice chaplain to preside over Mrs. Hardee’s funeral service this past February. He also visited the Tuomey Hospice office to thank everyone personally and made a donation to help build a hospice house.

“Tuomey Hospice sets high standards for its employees, and they never fail to surpass those expectations. They always receive positive feedback from hospice families and get high customer satisfaction scores in their evaluations,” says Price.

“What makes us a better option than other hospices in the area is that we are local people serving local people. Our patients are neighbors, friends and family members of friends.

It is not uncommon for the patients and families we serve to have mutual friends with our nurses, aides or volunteers. That makes us feel like family.”

There are times when healing will not come and we need to make a choice. If going home is not an option, Tuomey hopes to provide a simple alternative: THE TUOMEY HOSPICE HOUSE.

“There is a need in this area for such a place, and Tuomey wants to fill that need,” explains Tuomey Hos-pice Director Kim Price. “Currently, all of our hospice patients who need to be in the hospital are not in a cen-tralized location. They are in differ-ent wings of the hospital according to their specific illness and are seen by acute care nurses.”

Tuomey is eager to change that and expand its program by building a hospice house close to the campus to provide compassionate medical care in a home-like setting for ter-minally ill patients. It would be used for those whose symptoms cannot be managed at home and to provide respite to the patients’ families, al-lowing primary caregivers to get up to five days of much-needed rest.

A hospice house would give pa-tients the option to spend their final days in a less “institutional” setting while being cared for by nurses spe-cially trained in end-of-life care.

“I envision a peaceful, spa-like set-ting with rooms that have a homey feel and provide family members a comfortable place to sleep if they want to stay with their loved one,” says Price. A hospice house would also make it easier for patients and families going through similar struggles to connect, adding to the

network of support Tuomey Hospice already provides. Additionally, it will provide Tuomey with a warmer environment in which to conduct individual and group bereavement counseling sessions, monthly volun-teer meetings, the annual Tuomey Hospice Memorial Service and other hospice-related activities.

The plan is for the Tuomey Hospice House to accommodate up to 15 pa-tients with room to grow. It will have a place for visiting children to play, a family room, a chapel, garden areas, meeting rooms and possibly a house pet. The house will be staffed with nurses and aides at a 5-to-1staff-pa-tient ratio, and the medical director will be better able to make more fre-quent rounds. All pharmacy, dietary and laundry needs will be supplied by the hospital.

Tuomey hopes to raise all funds needed – an estimated $4 million – before breaking ground on the project.

“We are excited to begin raising funds for such a worthy cause and look forward to filling that need for the people of Sumter,” says Tuomey Foundation Executive Director Jeff Faw. The Foundation is planning a capital campaign to raise the money and is also exploring grant opportu-nities.

THE TUOMEY HOSPICE HOUSE:

A HOME AWAYFROM HOME

Vicki Ploger, who lost her daughter Melissa to cancer this past December, says, “I have nothing but good things to say about Tuomey Hospice.”

Melissa was a children’s advocate attorney living in Virginia when she learned that her diagnosis was terminal. “I wanted her here with us, so I called Tuomey. They were so accommodating and made all the necessary arrangements. It was reassuring to know my daughter would be in good hands.”

According to her mother, Melissa was a very determined and proactive person, intent to leave her mark on the world. In her years as an attorney, Melissa impacted the lives of more than a million children. The hospice team who cared for Melissa understood her independence and respected her resolve to make the decisions concerning her care.

“The hospice staff would make suggestions, but they always put Melissa’s thoughts and wishes first. They were never intrusive, always knowing when to give us space,” Vicki adds. “They did not just take care of Melissa. They cared for my husband and me too. Everyone went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed, both physically and emotionally. Even the person who delivered Melissa’s medicine would talk and pray with me when I needed comfort.”

After 30 years of service to the people of the tri-county area, Tuomey Hospice employs a staff full of love and is rooted in a tradition of compassion.

“We are steadfast in our mission to provide honest, loving care and to offer strength, dignity, friendship and comfort to our patients and their families during one of life’s most difficult times,” Price said. “That is why Tuomey Hospice is The Hospice that Serves.”

Page 8: LifeTimes: Spring 2011

Have you ever given your heart away knowing it would be broken?

Tuomey Hospice volunteers do it every day with unconditional, selfless compassion.

“Hospice volunteers give their hearts away to patients they know they will lose.” said Tuomey Home Health & Hospice Director Kim Price. “They are the backbone of the program. They keep us all focused and inspired.”

Dorothy Richburg is just one of these cherished volunteers. Through her unassuming Southern drawl, she emanates love, compassion and conviction. It’s not surprising to learn that she has always had a passion for caring for others: She worked as a private sitter and nurse’s assistant, and for several years she looked after other people’s children in her home.

After seeing an ad in the newspaper requesting volunteers for Tuomey Hospice, Mrs. Richburg was moved to get involved. Now, with six years of volunteer service behind her, she says, “The people I care for are more to me than patients. I call them my ‘Angels-in-Waiting.’

“I never knew I could love these people as I love my own family, but I do. I am a hands-on person, and each angel I help becomes a part of me,” she adds. “I am there to listen and love with an open heart. It’s a pleasure. I receive

so much from giving my time and love to these people. I am now a volunteer for life.”

Two years ago, Mrs. Richburg found herself tending to a very special 26-year-old man – he was one of the children she had cared for in her home two decades earlier.

“It was difficult to care for him knowing I would lose him, but the experience reminded me that life comes full circle and that the relationships you make along the way are so important,” she said. “Each life is precious, and each death is hard, but the sadness I felt when he passed was eased by the fact that I had been granted the opportunity to give him love one more time.”

It is volunteers like Mrs. Richburg that make the Tuomey Hospice Program special. “Our volunteers not only provide patients and families companionship and respite, but they are also instrumental in building a rapport and trust with the patient and family, which opens the door for our staff to provide better overall clinical care,” explains Tuomey Hospice Chaplain and Volunteer Coordinator the Rev. B.J. Drayton.

The volunteers also help with special events and programs, such as the Festival of Trees and the annual Tuomey Hospice Memorial Service. They deliver gifts and

food to the families and help to put together admission and bereavement packages. But most of all, as Mrs. Richburg explains, a hospice volunteer’s most important job is to “spend time with the patients and families, offer love, understanding and empathy and help to ease their suffering in any way you can.”

Each volunteer participates in a 16-hour orientation, which includes learning about the hospice philosophy, role-playing, HIPAA training and more. Each volunteer is also evaluated on a regular basis and attends a monthly rap session to continue their education, discuss cases, voice recommendations, lend support to each other and share their experiences.

“The rap sessions allow our volunteers the opportunity to come together as a community and to provide each other with support and encouragement, which strengthens the overall hospice program at Tuomey,” Drayton added.

“I don’t want to volunteer anywhere else but at Tuomey,” Richburg asserts. “The hospice team there is fantastic. They are all genuinely compassionate people who work extraordinarily well together to give the best possible care to each patient and family.”

Richburg adds that she is excited about the possibility of a Tuomey Hospice House. “There is a need for one, and it will bring so much to the people who live here. It will provide hospice patients and their families who are going through similar struggles with a comfortable place to bond and support each other,” she said.

Mrs. Richburg also has high hopes of winning the lottery. “When I win, I will build a hospice house for Tuomey and the community,” she proclaims.

And would she want to call it “The Richburg Hospice House?” Absolutely not. She’d name it after the young man she lost two years ago. And with a heart like that of Mrs. Richburg, we’re not surprised.

The Hospice Philosophy Hospice provides support and care for individuals in the last phases of an incurable disease. Our hope is that they may live as fully and comfortably as possible during those final days. Hospice recognizes that ... dying is part of the normal process of living and focuses on enhancing the quality of remaining life. Hospice affirms life and neither hastens nor postpones death. Hospice exists in the hope and belief that through appropriate care and the promotion of a caring community sensitive to their needs, individuals and their families may be free to attain a degree of satisfaction in preparation for death. … Hospice seeks to preserve and promote the inherent potential for growth within individuals and families during the last phase of life. … Hospice programs provide state-of-the-art palliative care and supportive services to individuals at the end of their lives, their family members and significant others, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in both the home and facility-based care settings. Physical, social, spiritual and emotional care is provided by a clinically directed interdisciplinary team consisting of patients and their families, professionals and volunteers during the last stages of an illness, the dying process and the bereavement period.

- The National Hospice andPalliative Care Organization

Tuomey Hospice began three decades ago as an all-volunteer program. Today, the professional team includes doctors, nurses, therapists, pharmacists, social workers and chaplains -- but volunteers are still at the heart of the care given.

Would you like to help? If you can read or talk with a patient or even just sit quietly with someone, if you can file papers in an office, write a letter or make a phone call, help a family member with the groceries, or just listen when someone needs to talk, you’d be a great volunteer!

“The reality is that a volunteer can do whatever he or she wants to do,” said Deree Long, Tuomey’s hospice clinical manager. “We can always use their talent, whatever that may be. They may never have patient contact, or that may be all they want to do.”

Volunteers who give direct patient care are required to fill

out an application, provide two references, give permission for background checks, and offer proof of driver’s license and private insurance. You’ll go through training and, once accepted, will receive a free annual health check, a mammogram after a year of service and a free lunch for every five hours contributed.

Drayton agrees the list of ways a person might help is endless. “Volunteers might make pillows, lap blankets, quilts, or other comforting items,” she said. “Crafters could make flower arrangements or bird feeders. Volunteers might build a wheelchair ramp, play board games, paint, color or draw with the patients. They may make memory books, write out a patient’s story, or simply reminisce with a patient. Patients love company and the presence of community.”

If you’d like to become a Tuomey Hospice volunteer, call coordinator B.J. Drayton at 773-4663.

After more than 15 years of service to Tuomey Healthcare System and the tri-county communities, The Tuomey Foundation continues its tradition of compassion by providing area residents with first-class care. It’s a responsibility we take great pride in.

There have been several exciting changes in the past year. We’ve said goodbye to some dear friends and welcomed some new ones. Executive Director Jeff Faw has settled into his new role quickly, leading the Foundation team with vigor and conviction.

“We have done a lot of work to improve our connection to the community by updating our website and constituent database, creating a Facebook page and enhancing the content of our mailings,” said Faw, who has been directing the Foundation since the fall.

“This emphasis on communication is to increase awareness and get more people involved.”

A North Carolina native, Faw moved to Sumter in 1996 with his wife Jeanne and three children. He says that he is “continually inspired by the generous spirit of the tri-county communities. Even in this time of economic difficulty, the Foundation saw increases in the number of supporters and in charitable giving across the board in 2010.” Because the operating budget of the Foundation is funded by the hospital, 100 percent of all funds raised go straight back to the community.

The Foundation saw a 30 percent increase in individual giving during the 2010 fiscal year. “Thanks to our generous supporters, we raised more money than ever, and as a result were able to support more programs and put more back into the community,” Faw added.

Internal giving was also on the rise in 2010. The number of Tuomey employee donors more than doubled, and the Employee Giving Campaign brought in more than $172,000, which will be used to open a Cancer Boutique & Resource Center in the summer. The center, which will be called From Tuomey, With Love, will be located near the Mammography Department and will offer a wig and hairpiece boutique, scarves, clothing, prosthetics and more for those fighting cancer.

The Foundation is also excited about its new grant-writing initiative, which will enable it to seek funds from federal and private programs. A new grant writing committee has already identified 20 opportunities and is eager to begin the application process.

This growth means great things for the future of the Foundation, the hospital and the community we serve. The Foundation is also working to expand the Women of Tuomey program. It has about 200 members, and its purpose is to build relationships between the women of Sumter and Tuomey Healthcare System. Drawing from the network of women who have graduated from Tuomey Fellows or who are otherwise involved in the activities of Tuomey or the Foundation, Women of Tuomey is predicated on the ever-increasing importance of women as healthcare decision-makers for their families.

“We want to expand this wonderful program so that more women of Sumter are aware of and engaged in all

that Tuomey Healthcare has to offer,” Faw explains. It offers women the chance to attend special

events that focus on healthy living and to hear guest speakers, such as nutritionists and

physicians. All funds raised by the events go to women’s health education.

Another exciting new venture for the Foundation is organizing a capital campaign to promote and raise funds to build a Tuomey Hospice House. A hospice house would provide medical care in a home-like setting for terminally-ill patients and would be used for patients whose symptoms cannot be controlled at home and

to provide respite to the patients’ families.

And the list goes on and on. The Tuomey Foundation is working

hard to reach and support as many people in our area as possible. “Last year was a huge success, and

I am excited about 2011 and beyond,” Faw said. “Most of all, I want more of our community to

get involved in what we do at Tuomey and the Foundation. I encourage everyone to come visit us, learn what we do and take advantage of the classes and programs we offer. You’ll be glad you did.”

The Tuomey Foundation was established in October 1995 as the fundraising arm of Tuomey Healthcare System. Contributions

made by individuals, families, businesses and other foundations go directly to the funds and services for which they are designated and

not to pay operating overhead. This ensures that 100% of donor contributions go to direct services for the community.

Giving to a charitable organization is a personal act. There has to be a connection, rooted in a belief that the group is going to do a good job with your hard-earned money. People give to their churches, their universities or their local United Way chapters because they feel these organizations will make a difference, that their dollars will make an impact in the life of another. But giving to your employer? Wait a minute: Aren’t they supposed to be paying you? If you’re on the outside of Tuomey looking in, you might feel that way. But if you’re part of the Tuomey family – Team Tuomey – you know EXACTLY why you give to The Tuomey Foundation.

Page 16: LifeTimes: Spring 2011

“It’s all about giving back; the ‘pay it forward’ sort of thing. The Foundation in itself is a great organization and helps our community in many ways, from infants and car seats to college students and scholarships, to the heart and oncology endowments,” said employee Sheila Geddings. “The Foundation touches lives throughout our community – my community. And through the employee campaign, we not only get a voice in what to do, we can actually be a part of the giving/financing of the projects.”

The 2010 Tuomey Foundation employee campaign – titled “We are Tuomey” – raised more than $172,000 during a two-week campaign drive. The money will be used to create a boutique for cancer patients. It will carry wigs, prostheses, scarves, creams and support group information for anyone who would like to use it.

“With the cancer boutique, we are impacting people in a very positive way in a most difficult time in their lives,” Geddings added. “My small contribution would not make much of a difference, but combined with the many others, we are making a difference – the whole Tuomey Team!”

During the two-week campaign, the hospital’s cafeteria was turned into a special area that resembled a football stadium. The

decorations and team spirit were over the top. “Team Tuomey” was simply at its best.

Since 2000, the employees of Tuomey have given back more than $1.6 million to various projects under the discretion of The Foundation. These campaigns have served as a unique way for all employees to show their

pride in Tuomey. “It still amazes me how incredible our

employees are when it comes to giving

to The Tuomey Foundation,” said Tuomey President & CEO Jay Cox. “They work hard each

day, giving countless hours

to those in need. And then they turn

right around and give more of themselves to the

Foundation. It’s remarkable!”“I love to help people who are in need,

and sometimes we don’t always have the resources to do so alone,” said Tuomey employee Maria Bartlette, who loved being a part of the team. “I chose to participate so that I could help make a difference in someone’s life. The boutique may not benefit you directly, but we all have mothers or wives or a loved one that will benefit from this wonderful boutique that the employees of Tuomey Healthcare System helped make possible. It was a great pleasure to be a part of such a wonderful campaign.”

“If we don’t take pride in the place where

we work, who will? Giving back to the hospital is giving back

to our community! Others will be able to enjoy the fruits of our labors for many years to come.”

A message from the Foundation director

Dear Friends & Supporters:My experiences as the new

executive director of The Tuomey Foundation continually affirm what I already knew about the people of Sumter: This is a place full of generous people willing to give their time, talents and hard-earned money to an important cause. Each and every dollar the Foundation receives is used to better the Sumter area and the health of its residents. And it is because of you, our gracious donors and supporters, that we are able to continue our work to improve the quality of life for so many.

The tri-county area is also a community of people who band together in difficult times. Despite challenging economic conditions worldwide, The Tuomey Foundation saw an increase in fiscal giving across the board in 2010, and the number of individual donors increased by 30 percent. The Employee Campaign, which the Tuomey family looks forward to each year, was also enormously successful. The number of employees who gave more than doubled compared to 2009, and the campaign netted more than $172,000. Those funds are being used to open a new Cancer Resource Center & Boutique, offering wigs, prosthetics and more to those fighting the disease.

The Foundation’s important medical programs and events continue to thrive. Tuomey Fellows graduated another outstanding class of 14 community leaders, adding to the list of 163 graduates who are advocates for the hospital. Through our Camp Scamp, SAFE Kids and Care Reach programs, the Foundation was able to better the lives of more than 2,000 children and thus invest in the future of this community.

The success of the Foundation’s special events was a source of great

pride this past year. The programs funded by these events and others allow Tuomey to fulfill its mission to provide world-class healthcare to our communities.

As detailed in this issue of LifeTimes, the Foundation is now

preparing to launch a capital campaign to raise funds for the construction and

establishment of a hospice house. This addition to Tuomey Healthcare System will

enhance the hospital’s ability to offer exceptional lifelong medical care. We are also working diligently to grow our Women of Tuomey program, which is instrumental in educating women about how they can make healthier decisions for themselves and their families.

Lastly, this community is one of open arms, graciously welcoming me in my new role, and I thank you for your support. I look forward to an exciting and fruitful future with the Foundation and with you.

To each of you who gave your gifts of time and resources to makelast year such as success, I offer youmy heartfelt thanks. With gratitude,

Jeff FawExecutive Director/Chief Development OfficerThe Tuomey Foundation

CAMP SCAMPA testament to its tradition of compassion, Tuomey celebrated its 19th Annual

Camp SCAMP in 2010. Funded by the Foundation and coordinated by Tuomey Women and Children’s Services, Camp SCAMP offers a free, fun-filled traditional camp experience in a safe environment staffed by nurses and respiratory therapists for 70 asthmatic children aged five to 12 each summer. Activities, cookouts and field trips are enhanced by educational sessions that help kids better understand and manage their asthma.

Each year the liveliness of dance illuminates the compassionate care provided by Tuomey’s Women and Children’s Services. Miss Libby’s School of Dance and the Junior Welfare League of Sumter presented the 13th annual

Sumter Arts Showcase in 2010. The event raised more than $19,000 for

Women and Children’s Services, which will be used to enhance infant and newborn care at Tuomey. Over the years, donors have contributed more than $240,000 to hospital-related projects through the Sumter Arts Showcase and its generous sponsors.

FESTIVAL OF TREES /CIRCLEOF LIGHTS

With a spirit of love and warmth provided by fellowship and beautifully decorated Christmas trees, and the joy of Christmas music performed by the Sumter High School Chamber Choir, the Foundation’s 2010 Festival of Trees celebrated the care and compassion offered by Tuomey Hospice Services, raising more than $50,000 to support the program. Like the 49 sponsor-decorated trees displayed throughout the hospital, Tuomey Hospice Services offers comfort and peace during the cold and dark winters of life.

THE TUOMEY FELLOWS PROGRAMIn its 10th year, the Tuomey Fellows Program

graduated another 16 participants. The Tuomey Fellows Program gives business and volunteer leaders from the community an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at what goes on at Tuomey and in healthcare in general. Over eight months, participants attend healthcare-oriented education sessions, tour the hospital and observe its intricate workings. By the time they graduate, participants are knowledgeable in the daily operations of Tuomey Healthcare System and are ambassadors for their community’s hospital.

For 13 years, with the support of the Foundation and the collaborative efforts of several community partners, SAFE KIDS Sumter County has worked to prevent accidental injury to children under the age of 14. At schools, fairs and community events throughout Sumter County, program coordinators

give tours of the Safety Shuttle, distribute hundreds of free or reduced-cost bicycle helmets and car seats and educate parents, caregivers and children on child safety issues, such as vehicle and bike safety, fire and water safety, electrical dangers, drug abuse and more.

“The Fellows is a wonderful bridge between the hospital and the community. We were welcomed in and were so impressed by the leadership and the medical staff. They

showed us how the hospital

works -- it wasn’t staged at all. The Foundation

made that possible.”

CARE REACHThrough a cooperative effort between Tuomey Medical

Professionals, the Lee County School District and Sumter School districts 2 and 17, Care Reach has identified thousands of children with vision, hearing or dental problems and secured needed care. Without this vital program, many children would go untreated due to a lack of money, a factor a child in need

should not have to consider.Care Reach – formerly known

as Health Reach – has been around since the early 1990s. Tuomey Healthcare System is the only hospital in South Carolina

that provides this type of service, and we could not begin to help these

children without our partnerships with healthcare professionals and

supporters of The Tuomey Foundation. Local doctors and dentists treat

many of these children free of charge or at a highly reduced

cost. If you want more information on how you can

help, please contact Chris Watson at 803.774.9009 or 803.484.6536.
