Dear Parents,

This week South Charlotte Middle celebrated a festive spirit week. Thank you to our

students and teachers for participating in our themed days all week. Yesterday we had a

pep rally to recognize our fall sports, and then our football team led us to a big victory. Go

Shockers!

As you know safety is our top priority. We have reminded students this week about bus

safety and bus protocol particularly as it relates to seating. Bus drivers are the only

authorized personnel to assign seats. Students may not assign seats to others and

students should not hold or argue over seats. We appreciate parent support in this

matter.

Municipal elections, including the school bond vote, will be Tuesday, November 7. Please

Also, school will be closed on Friday, November 10 in observance of Veterans Day.

STANDOUTS

Congratulations to Delanie Hill (6th),

Michael Keretsis (7th), and D’Andre Hunt (8th)! They have been selected by

teachers as SCMS Shocker Standouts. Shocker Standouts are scholarly, honest, optimistic, caring, kind, energetic, and

responsible (SHOCKER).

South Charlotte Middle teachers employ many strategies and resources in their classes for talent development students. One resource that allows students to think deeply and critically are DBQ and Mini Q lessons. Document Based Questions or DBQ's are lessons which pose an interesting question, have students explore the questions by examining authentic documents. Then the students develop a thesis and write a response. At South Charlotte Middle School we have Mini Q resources for our Social Studies classes and ELA classes. The questions around which each unit is built are thought provoking and lead to rich discussions; here are some examples: The Great Wall of Ancient China: Did the benefits outweigh the costs? Valley Forge: Would you have quit? E.E. Cummings - How does E.E. Cummings use sight and sound to create meaning? Midsummer's Night Dream - Is True Love true? Many of our staff members have been trained on how to utilize this Mini Q tool in their classroom. Mrs. Laura Bauer, 8th grade Social Studies/Science teachers, serves on a a district leadership team to help implement the resource through training and modeling. She says this about the program: "Inquiry is the basis for helping students to evaluate ideas and form hypotheses on an idea or event. The DBQ format not only provides rich materials for the inquiry process, but a format for student to interact and challenge ideas and thoughts as they draw their own conclusions."

We Need Your Pictures!

We have started a board in the gym that has pictures of students/teachers doing something active with

their pet. If you would like to contribute (1) 4x6 picture to the board, please send (1) in with your

student. Please write the student’s name and pet’s name in marker in the corner of the picture. Keep in

mind that I cannot police the board 24/7 so we cannot be responsible if a picture falls off/is taken off

the board.

Homecoming 2017

On a perfect fall evening the SHOCKERS took the field against the Southwest Patriots. It was the last home game for the current 8th grade players. As the Pep band played and the dance and cheer teams performed the Shocker football was focused on one task….3-2!

The Shockers received the football at the start of the game and on the first possession it ended in a punt. The Shocker Defense came in and set the tone for the game. The defense stuffed the run game of the Patriots. The Patriots QB had no time to breathe as a cluster of Shockers lead by Luke Gullickson, Graham Guttknecht, Panos Burlos. Joshua Streu, Sam Decker, and Matt Fickling were in his face all evening long. They were unblock able!! The Defense forced a quick 3 and out.

The Offense took over and began to impose their will on the Patriots defense and on second down Sam Decker caught a slant pass from Nicholas Gates and it was off to the races. Decker scored on a 65yard catch and run. The offense began clicking and chewing up the clock in the 2nd quarter and Nicholas Gates threw a 75yard catch and run to Luke Hunt for a TD! The Shockers led 14-0 going into halftime.

The second half of the game was more of the Shocker defense pounding the Patriots. The Patriots did not have 1 first down on the day! The SHOCKER offense hit another big play from Nicholas Gates to Jake Perry with an amazing catch over the shoulder throw for 75yards. The possession was finished off by a hard run by CJ Casner and a two-point conversion by the lunchbox crew lead by Damien McNeal and Matt Fickling blocking and the Gullickson twins punching it in!

The SHOCKER defense only allowed less than 10 yards of offense and had its third shutout of the season. Defense had two interceptions on the day by Luke Hunt and CJ Casner.

The SHOCKERS are on the road next week taking on Community House in their last game of the season.

Winter sports try-outs for basketball and cheer have been moved up and will be 11/14 and 11/15 4-6 pm. All athletes must have a completed athletics packet on file from 2017 and an up to date physical. If a packet has already been turned in it is good for the year. Athletes must sign up at bit.ly/scwinter17 prior to try-outs.
