Bishop Ditlev G. Monrad

August 2010 ● Danish Society News Magazine 3

Next year on Thursday 24th November 2011, the Danish Society will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of his birth.

This may seem a strange thing for the Danish Society in Auckland to do. He was, after all, a Danish Lutheran pastor that was appointed Bishop, he was also a politician and a liberal at that and helped to write the first Danish Constitution and became a Danish Prime Minister for a short time. All these achievements may be well and good, but what was his connection to New Zealand? Why he is significant to all New Zealanders?

You will be able to find out the answer to this question if you go on to the newly set up Auckland-based website for the Monrad celebrations, that has been developed by Kurt Marquart and is a work in progress. You will find it on: www.monrad.info.org.nz

If you have no computer yourself, your local library and their staff will be able to help you find the website.

If you have any information about Monrad in connection with NZ, please let the any of the team know; Inger Mortensen, Kurt Marquart, Carlo Mikkelsen, Karen Andersen Yates. We would love to hear from you.

And in conclusion do mark Thursday 24th November 2011 in your diary and keep the evening free for this celebration.

Karen Andersen Yates

Thanks to Annette Jorna for organizing a wonderful mid-winter Christmas party on June 26th. She put in a big effort to ensure we all had a great time. Thanks also to Dorte Soelmark and the food preparation team for the delicious open sandwiches.

Annette is always looking for volunteers to help with food, setting the tables and of course the cleaning up. Give her a call before the next party.

The world’s most prestigious dinner table ware is the Danish designed and produced Flora Danica by Royal Copenhagen. It was commissioned by Crown Prince Frederik on behalf of King Christian VII of Denmark in the late 18th century and was intended as a gift for the Empress Catherine of Russia. It became the life’s work of the most gifted porcelain painters at the time, Johann Christoph Bayer, who commenced the task in 1790, and did not finish until 12 years later, with 1802 different hand-moulded and hand-painted pieces.

Flora Danica was used for the first time on 29th January 1803 at a banquet in honour of the King’s birthday. The Royal Service has only been used at ceremonial events, such as royal birthday, weddings and some state visits. Of the 1802 original pieces of the Flora Danica set completed in 1803, a total of 1530 have survived to the present day. A part of this service continues to be in use by Queen Margrethe II at functions at both Christiansborg Palace and Amalienborg Palace. It was not until 1863 that a second collection of Flora Danica was made, as a wedding

gift from the Danish people to Princess Alexandra, the daughter of King Christian IX, on her marriage to the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII. This set is now kept at Windsor Castle as a most valued part of Queen Elizabeth II’s collection.

To day, Flora Danica remains available from Royal Copenhagen, and is displayed in many different designs at the establishment on Stroeget in Copenhagen. It is regarded as sovereign in individuality and decorative art, clearly formulated and aesthetically executed. The late Princess Grace of Monaco wrote in her book on flowers “One of the most delicate and beautiful porcelain patterns is the famous Flora Danica from Denmark.“

The Mark of Denmark

A history of the Danish House for the past 10 years was presented to the club at the 10 year celebration of Danish House, Penrose on February 27th & 28th. Copies are available to members for $4.00 each. Get your copy at an Open House or other Danish Society event.

From the Valhalla Booking Off ceriThis year we have had a few members staying at

Valhalla who have not visited for several years. This is the first time they have seen all the substantial work that has been accomplished over the past few years. The positive feedback I have received is very encouraging and indicates that the Valhalla Sub-Committee is doing its duty of care for this unique property.

Working Bee VolunteersIt was encouraging to see such a good turnout

for the planting at the working bee in July. Many of our helpers were non-members who stay at Valhalla through a member and were more than happy to put something back into the property. However we would love to see more members who use Valhalla regularly participate in at least one working bee a year. Many of you have promised your attendance to me but as yet there has been very little action. Please read Erik Nissen’s Working Bee report in this newsletter to see how you can help.

Septic Tanks UpgradeDuring the July working bee Palle, Erik, Kurt Raddock

and myself visited Simple Wastewater Solutions, just out of Matakana, to view their eco-system for upgrading our two septic tanks at Valhalla. We have looked at several options over the past 12 months that ranged in quotes from $12,500 to $85,000 and I now know more about septic tanks than I ever thought I needed to know. A chance meeting at the ITM in Matakana introduced us to the Simple Wastewater Solution System and we agreed this is the best fit for Valhalla in both cost and efficiency.

Valhalla RatesOver the past few months I have been analysing

the Valhalla occupancy and rates and provided a discussion paper to the committee with statistics on usage and income. As mentioned in the last newsletter the occupancy and income for Valhalla continues to grow. It was agreed at the June Committee meeting we will not recommend a rate increase for the 2010–2011 financial year, however it will be reviewed again next year. It was also agreed that the rate for functions such as weddings would now be increased to the Christmas rate of $320 a day irrelevant of which day of the week it is held.

Valhalla GuidelinesNow when you receive your Valhalla booking

confirmation there will be an additional page, which has the Valhalla Guidelines. Please read these guidelines, much of it is common sense but if you are unsure of anything and it is not written in the guidelines please phone me, it is toll free. During winter when you use the fireplace you must clean and re-set the fire. Arriving late on a cold winter’s night to find the fireplace unset and no wood restacked is very frustrating, which several of our members have discovered over the past month.

Lastly thank you for the encouraging comments. I tend to be the recipient of these accolades as I do the bookings but I do pass these onto the Valhalla Sub-Committee and the hard-working volunteers at the working bees, it is definitely a team effort.

While looking for a picture of Norsewood on the internet, I found the following website – www.norsewoodcemetery.co.nz

The website has the family trees of many of the original settlers’ Danish ancestors including that of Richard Logan’s Clausen ancestors who came from Egvad, Aabenraa-Sønderborg, Denmark. Pam Logan, Editor
