Maidon:

Das Fotomotel ist ein ehemaliger Puff. „Mac. International Girls“ versprechen die

Kleber an den Fensterscheiben. Drinnen stehen 50-er-Jahre Vitrinen vor gestreiften

Wänden, ein Wunderland aus Plunder, das von selbstgebauten Lüstern beleuchtet

wird.

Es ist der 12. Oktober 2013. Paul lädt zu einer „Soiree Surprise“ ein.

AT 03 Kassel Klingel und Ruf nach St Pauli

Maidon:

Die Zuschauer drängen in den Raum, auf der Suche nach den letzten freien Plätzen.

Ich habe schon einen: Ich sitze in einem aufgeflexten, gepolsterten Einkaufswagen

wie in einem Sessel und bin bereit für meine erste Dada-Aufnahme. Click.

OT 06 Kassel St Pauli erklärt Spielregeln 0’57 mit Atmo

ab 0’08 Das Spiel funktioniert so: Da auf diesem Tisch befindet sich ein Würfelbrett mit

einem Würfel, und auf diesem Würfel sind 6 Worte drauf. Eines dieser Worte ist Herr-Kules,

eines ist Umn-Achtung, ein drittes ist die Acht-erbahn, ein viertes ist Kasse-L, da ist Frau

Kules und 8. (Also, das sind die 6 Flächen des Würfels). Jetzt ist das Publikum gebeten zu

würfeln, das Würfelbrett weiterzugeben und würfeln zu lassen, und dann bräuchte ich noch

jemand, der ne Uhr am Handgelenk trägt, der 5 Minuten Zeit misst. Und nach 5 Minuten Zeit

mit dieser Tischglocke kurz mal antippt.


AT 04 Stereo Attachees mit Schreibmaschine (ab 0’31, dann Schnitt auf 1’07)

Maidon:

Der Würfel fällt auf die Stereo Attachees alias Umn-Achtung.

„Latin Letter“ heißt das Stück.

Einer der beiden Musiker tippt im Takt auf einer Schreibmaschine. Seine Anschläge

auf der Tastatur sind zufällig.

Den Text, der dabei entsteht, vorzutragen, ist gar nicht so einfach:

The Fotomotel is a former brothel. The labels on the windowpanes still promise:

„Mac. International Girls“.

Inside there are glass cabinets from the fifties against striped walls - a wonderland of

trinkets illuminated by selfmade chandeliers.

It’s the 12th of October 2013. Paul has invited to a „Soiree Surprise“.

Maidon:

The audience is pushing into the room, looking out for the last vacant seats. No

problem for me: I am already seated in a shopping trolley made into an easy chair,

ready to record my first Dada-session. Click.

OT 06 Kassel St Pauli explains the rules of the game 0’57 mit Atmo

The game works like this: There’s a dice board and a dice on this table, and on the dice are

six words. One is „Mr Kules“ (Herr Kules), one is „Derangement“ (Umn-Achtung), the third

one is „Roller-Coaster“ (Acht-erbahn), the forth one „Kasse-L“. There are „Mrs Kules“ and

„Eight“. These are the six sides of the dice. Now the audience is asked to throw the dice,

then pass the dice board on to someone else. And then I need someone with a watch to time

5 minutes and ring this bell afterwards.

Maidon:

The dice is cast on the Stereo Attachees aka „Derangement“ (Umn-Achtung).

They are playing a piece of music called „Latin Letter“.

One of the musicians is typing on a typewriter. His typing is rhythmical, he is hitting

letters by chance.

To declaim the text typed in that manner is not so easy.

AT 05 Kassel Frau Kules Atmo

Maidon:

Der Schatten von Judit Rozsas alias Frau Kules tanzt hinter einer Leinwand. An

ihrem Körper klebt etwas. Es sieht aus wie ein Schutzanzug beim Fechten. Sie löst

einen Teil davon ab, es ist ein Buchstabe. Noch einer und noch einer. Hinter der

Leinwand erscheint ein Wort.

E-G-O-T-R-I-P

Maidon:

Zuletzt schiebt die Tänzerin ein „S“ in die Mitte. Aus „EGOTRIP“ wird „EGOSTRIP“.

AT 06 Musik Kassel Laura Konserve ab 0’13 Gelächter

Maidon:

Die Acht, Laura Mercadada, taucht als gelber, verwirrter Geist auf. Sie trägt auf den

Schultern einen Karton, der anstelle eines Gesichtsausschnitts einen Vorhang hat

und hinter dem Vorhang eine Maske. Der Maskengeist leuchtet den Leuten mit einer

Lampe ins Gesicht. Er wankt ohne Orientierung hierhin und dorthin. Das Publikum

amüsiert sich.

Am Ende des Abends erzählt Axel von den Stereo Attachees mir einen alten Witz.

„Was ist der Unterschied zwischen einem Krokodil? Je grüner, desto schwimmts!“

Maidon:

The shadow of Judit Rozsas alias „Mrs Kules“ is dancing behind a canvas screen.

Something is sticking to her body. It looks like a fencing suit. She is taking something

off - it turns out to be a letter. Another one and another one. Behind the screen the

letters are forming one word.

Child:

E-G-O-T-R-I-P

Maidon:

The dancer is slipping an „S“ in between the other letters. „EGOTRIP“ now reads

„EGOSTRIP“.

AT 06 Music Kassel Laura Konserve ab 0’13 Laughter

Maidon:

Number Eight, Laura Mercadada, is arising as a yellow confused ghost. She is

carrying a cardboard box in place of her head, showing a curtain instead of a face

and behind the curtain, there’s a mask. The masked ghost is flashing its light at

peoples’ faces. It is drifting hither and thither. The audience finds this quite amusing.

At the end of the evening Stereo Attachee Axel is telling an old joke: „What’s the

difference between a crocodile? The greener, the swimmer!“

Ein Bauzaun hält unerwünschte Besucher vom Betreten des Kochareals ab. Das

besetzte Gelände in Zürich-Albisrieden ist riesig und wirkt im gelblichen Schein der

Straßenlaternen überhaupt nicht einladend. Der Asphalt glänzt nass. Ich bin hinter

einem der Besetzer durch einen Spalt im Zaun gestiegen. Zuerst gerate ich in eine

Bar im ersten Stock. Mark Divo? Achselzucken. Wer ist das? Komische Frage. Ichbin auf der Suche nach dem „König des Dada“ und will die legendäre Geschichte von

Maidon:

A hoarding is in the way of anyone who wants to get into Kochareal. The squat in

Zürich-Albisrieden is huge and looks uninviting in the yellow glow of the street lamps.

The tarmac is shiny with rain. I have passed the hoarding on the heels of a squatter

and found a bar on the first floor. Mark Divo? People shrug. Who is that? - Weird

question. I am looking for the “King of Dada“, because I want to hear the legendary

Sofa auf einem schmutzigen Teppich zu arrangieren.

Maidon:

Ein paar Leute vom Haus helfen ihm dabei, darunter Mark II, der Kurator des

Ausstellungsraums.

AT 09 Atmo Koch Installation kurz

Maidon:

Es ist der 23. November 2013, und Mark Divo bereitet seine Buchpremiere vor. Das

Werk heißt „Im Bett mit Mark Divo“. Während Mark vom Sofa aus das Einrichteneiner Videoinstallation dirigiert, gehe ich zu dem Tischchen, auf dem das Buch liegt.

Der Einband ist altrosa, die Schrift darauf golden geprägt, etwa 3 Kilo schwer. 75

Maidon:

It is the 23rd of November 2013, and Mark Divo is preparing for his book launch. He

has titled his work „In Bed with Mark Divo“. With Mark sitting on the sofa, having avideo installation set up, I am going to the little table where the book is displayed.

The cover is of antique pink with engraved golden letters, and it weighs 3

kilogrammes at a guess. 75 Swiss Franks for 443 pages of an artist’s monograph.

„Die ersten internationalen Dada-Festwochen Cabaret Voltaire“

Sprecher 2 (Mark):

Eines Tages kam mir ein Gerücht aus der Punkerszene zu Ohren: Es gäbe ein Haus

in der Zürcher Altstadt, das schon seit geraumer Zeit leerstehe, 5 Stockwerke hoch,

mittelalterliche Bausubstanz und an der Fassade hätte es noch eine komischeGedenktafel für irgendein Cabaret. Die Beschreibung der Immobilie passte auf ein

mir wohlbekanntes Objekt an der Spiegelgasse. Ich machte einen kleinen

Spaziergang durchs Niederdorf und siehe da: die Geburtsstätte des Dadaismus war

tatsächlich entmietet worden. Nach ein paar Abklärungen fand ich heraus, dass das

Haus tatsächlich saniert werden sollte und die konkreten Umbaupläne bereits

vorhanden waren.

OT 13 Mark Dada a heute (über Atmo) 0’25

Dadaismus find ich, also jemand, der sich als Dadaist bezeichnet, das find ich sehr albern,

albern oder vielleicht auch kindisch, weil das ja eine Geschichte ist, das ist ja eine historische

Bewegung, die sind ja alle schon seit über 50 Jahren tot. (ff schwer verständlich) Also die,

die halt wirklich Dadaisten waren. Und andere gibt’s ja nicht, oder?

Sprecher 2 (Mark):

Am Samstag, den 2. Februar 2002, brachen wir die Türen der Spiegelgasse 1 auf.

Alle hatten sich feingemacht, die Jungs trugen Schlips und Kragen und die Mädchen

waren als Buffetdamen verkleidet und verteilten zu Grammophonklängen Häppchen

an ein paar neugierige Passanten. Wir erzählten jedem, der es wissen wollte, dass

wir das Haus quasi geerbt hatten und nun zu unserem Einzug eine kleine öffentlicheFeier veranstalten würden. Es dauerte nicht lange, bis die Polizei auf uns

aufmerksam wurde. Die herbeigeeilten Beamten bemerkten nichts Anrüchiges,

bekamen ein Sandwich in die Hand gedrückt und beglückwünschten uns zu unserer

Erbschaft.

Ja, das is nichts gegen Dada, weißt du? Ich finds nicht schlimm, aber ich finds jetzt auch

nicht, reißt mich auch nicht vom Hocker so, also hab ich mit 15 gelesen, fand ich toll, so würd

ich’s abhaken... so wo isch min Tabak... wo ist mein Tabak (Atmo)

Sprecher 2 (Mark):

Wir schrieben ein Manifest und organisierten eine Pressekonferenz, auf der wir den

Erhalt des historischen Cabaret Voltaire als lebendige Gedenkstätte zu Ehren des

Dadaismus forderten. Auf dieser Pressekonferenz traten wir zum ersten Mal als

„Fondation Kroesus pour l’humanite’“ in Erscheinung, einer Stiftung, die sich neben

the building was to be renovated and the actual conversion plans had already been

submitted. All permissions were obtained.1

Dadaism – I think that someone who calls himself a Dadaist, well that’s quite silly, maybe

even childish. Because it is history, it is a historic movement and all of them are more than

50 years dead. Those who were real Dadaists. And there are no others, are there?

Voice 2 (Mark):

On Saturday, the 2nd of February 2002, we broke down the doors at No. 1

Spiegelgasse. On this occasion everyone had on their smartest outfit. Guys wore

suits and ties, girls were dressed up as catering ladies and served snacks to the

bewildered passers-by accompanied by grammophone music. We told anyone who

wanted to listen that we had inherited the house, so to speak, and we were now

having a modest party in order to celebrate. It was not long before the police caught

on to us. The officers came rushing to the spot but noted nothing they could object to.

They had sandwiches pressed into their hands and then congratulated us on our

inheritance.

I am not telling you something against Dada, you know? I don’t think, it is bad, but it doesn’t

knock me off my feet either. I read it when I was 15, I thought it was great, that’s it.... Where

is my tabacco?... Where is my tabacco?

Voice 2 (Mark):

We composed a manifesto and organized a press conference at which we demandedthe preservation of the historic Cabaret Voltaire as a living memorial to the Dada

movement. At this press conference we appeared for the first time as „Fondation

pour l’humanite Kroesus“, a foundation committed to stating annual Dada festival

weeks, as well as the active squandering of idle resources.

OT 15 Mark Forderung Cabaret Voltaire 0’22

Die Forderung war ja, dass wir gerne eine Institution haben wollen, ein Museum, eine

Gedenkstätte für den Dadaismus, und dann haben wir uns überlegt, was macht eine

Institution? Die schmeißt das Geld zum Fenster raus. Und dann haben wir halt an dieser

ersten Pressekonferenz da 1000 Stutz in Einfränklern eimerweise zum Fenster rausgekippt.

Sprecher 2 (Mark):

Da den Passanten grösstenteils der Wert der Münzen nicht einmal ein Bücken wert

war und das meiste Geld von realdadaistischen Aktivisten in die Gullischlitze

geschoben wurde, beraumte die ‚Fondation Krösus’ eine zweite Fensterausschüttung

für den 1. April 2002 ein. Das von der Krösus-Stiftung für den Erwerb der Immobilie

eröffnete Spendenkonto sollte beim Scheitern dieses Vorhabens eine großzügigere

Ausschüttung in Scheinen ermöglichen.

Bestimmte Sachen stimmen in dem Buch, bestimmte Sachen sind übertrieben oder

untertrieben, tatsächlich haben wir 6800 Franken zum Fenster rausgeworfen... also mit allenmöglichen anderen Sachen.

Maidon:

So verschwindet der König und Antidadaist Mark Divo und lässt mich mit einem 3

Kilo schweren Buch in der Hand zurück.

The claim was, that we wanted to have an institution, a museum, a memorial for Dadaism, so

we thought, what does an institution do? It throws money out of the window. And then, at this

first press conference, we were throwing 1000 Swiss Franks out of our windows by the

bucket.

Since the passers-by mostly did not even bother to stoop down to pick up the small

change, and nearly all the money was pushed into street drain grates by real-Dadaist

activists, the „Kroesus-Foundation“ convened to a second out of the window money

distribution for the 1st of April 2002. The Kroesus Foundation’s opening of a

donations account for the purpose of purchasing the property was announced. In

case the purchase was to fail, a more generous window distribution with banknotes

was introduced.

Am 16. März 2008 wandert Alice McCabe zum ersten Mal durch’s Niederdorf. Es ist

kalt und ungemütlich, Schneeflocken treiben durch die Gassen, und der Himmel, die

Häuserfassaden und das Kopfsteinpflaster verschmelzen zu einem einzigen Grau.

Nur die teuer aussehenden, goldenen Osterhasen glänzen verlockend, aber die

Geschäfte, hinter deren Scheiben sie stehen, sind alle geschlossen. Auch das

Cabaret Voltaire macht am Sonntag nicht auf. Am Montag auch nicht. Alice McCabe,

zu dieser Zeit noch Kunststudentin in Brighton, ist extra wegen des Geburtsorts vonDada nach Zürich gekommen.

In the final year of Brighton I went to Zurich for three days, just on a little racky (?) to go and

check out the city, and it was really bizarre three days, it was Easter Time, so you arrived,

and there were these really luxurious kind of chocolate rabbits and chocolates in all the

windows, but it was very grey and very cold and it actually was even snowing during those

days, and I was staying in a little hostel really in the old – in the Niederdorf, so that’s where

the Cabaret Voltaire was, and I arrived, and the Cabaret Voltaire was shut. It was shut on

Sunday, it was shut on Monday, I thought, oh, it’s gonna be shut the whole week, so I only

this is the navel, this is sort of a bigger navel and in it is written: In this house Cabaret

Voltaire opened on the 5th of February 1916 and Dadaism was founded.

On the 16th of March 2008 Alice McCabe is rambling through the „Niederdorf“ for the

first time. The day is cold and uninviting, snowflakes are drifting through the alleys,

and the sky, facades and cobblestones are melting together in sole greyness.

Only the expensive-looking golden Easter bunnies are shiny and tempting, but the

stores displaying them are all closed. Cabaret Voltaire is also closed on that Sunday.

And on the following Monday. Alice McCabe, Arts student from Brighton, has come to

Zurich because she wanted to visit the Birthplace of Dada.

Ich gehe normalerweise mit den Leuten durch diese schmale Gasse Richtung Limmat runter,

den Fluß von Zürich. Und wenn man hier die Gasse runterguckt, hat man quasi eine Collage

von Schildern von Geschäften, also die so im rechten Winkel von den Fassaden abstehen,

wie man sich das von früher her gewohnt ist. Da unten hängt n Schuh, da sieht man so einen

Bauern – die Älplibar, und hier ist das Schild eines Bioladens, der heißt Vitus, und das ist

schon fast eine Collage, eine Collage im Raum. Für mich hat Dadaismus auch was mit

Sehen zu tun, ich mein, man kann die Welt so akzeptieren, wie sie eben da ist: O.k., das is n

Schild, und jetzt latsch ich da gradaus weiter, und da unten is ne Straßenlaterne und da steht

n Auto und dann ist da der Fluß.

Ich kann auch meinen Blick ein bisschen auftun, und dann seh ich, o.k., diese Schilder, die

hängen alle so kreuz und quer, wie man kuckt, zusammen, das ist schon fast wie ne Collage

(liest vor)

Ich weiß nicht genau, wie man dazu kommt, dass man so zu einem etwas anderen Blick

kommt... Vielleicht ist es einfach ne Art Hinterfragen von Dingen, das Hinterfragen von

Worten, das Auseinandernehmen und dann wieder Zusammenbasteln.

OT 24 Paul Shop Signs 2’31I usually take people through this narrow alley down to the „Limmat“, the river of Zurich. And

when you are looking down this alley, there is kind of a collage out of shop signs, that stand

out from the facades at right angles, the way such signs were formerly affixed.

Down there, there is a shoe, then a farmer comes in view – the „Älpli-Bar“ (Little Alps Bar),

and then there is a sign for a wholefood-store called „Vitus“. Together these signs can be a

collage, a collage in space.

For me Dadaism is connected to a special view. I mean, I can accept the world the way it is:

O.k., this is a sign. I am moving on. There is a street lamp further down and a car and the

river.Or I can open my view a bit and see: O.k., these signs are hanging there in a crisscross

manner, and if I look at it this way, it is like a collage (reading out signs)

I don’t know how you manage to get that different view... Maybe it is a kind of questioning

things, questioning words, taking them apart and putting them back together.

Grundsätzlich sollte ich mal noch kurz erzählen, welcher mein Heiligenname ist, den ich

auch als Dadaist führe, und zwar habe ich mich zum Hl. St. Pauli ernannt. Das ist eine

Mischung aus ursprünglich katholischer Erziehung in der Zentralschweiz und dem einen

Jahr, das ich in ner Parallelstraße zur Reeperbahn in Hamburg gelebt habe, ich habe weitere

Jahre auch in Hamburg gelebt, und diese Mischung, weil mein Vorname Paul ist, hat dann

den Heiligen St. Pauli ergeben. (Rest zu Gebet)

years, and this mixture, because my christian name is Paul, led to the holy St. Pauli.

Die Wasserkirche liegt unterhalb des Großmünsters an der Limmat. An dieser Stelle,

auf einem Stein im Fluss, wurden die Stadtheiligen von Zürich, Felix und Regula,

enthauptet. Die Legende erzählt, sie seien kopflos, wie sie waren, noch 40 Ellen

weiter bergauf gegangen, wo sie dann begraben wurden.

Meines Erachtens sind Felix und Regula die Eltern von Dada. Und die Spur dieses Kindes

The „Wasserkirche“ (Water Church) lies below the „Großmünster“ (Great Cathedral)

at the Limmat. On this spot, on a stone in the river, the Saints of the city, Felix and

Regula, were beheaded. Legend has it, that they walked 40 cubits uphill without theirheads and were afterwards buried there.

I regard Felix and Regula as the parents of Dada. The trace of this child Dada is lost at

Spiegelgasse 1. Which certainly leaves open one question: If two headless people beget a

child, does it have no head at all or two heads?

Eine Wiedergeburtsanzeige

Im April 1916 wird im Cabaret Voltaire in der Züricher Spiegelgasse der Dadaismus

ausgerufen. Und zwar so laut, dass Nachbar Wladimir Iljitsch Lenin die Polizei ruft.

Jedenfalls behauptet das die Legende. Eine von zahllosen Dada-Legenden. Wahr

ist, dass Dada die Kunst aufmischte, überlief und unterwanderte, jede Menge Tabus

nachhaltig brach, um dann wieder zu verschwinden. Scheinbar.

Denn als im Jahr 2002 das Haus des Cabaret Voltaire verkauft werden soll, kommt

Dada in beinah wiedergängerischer Manier zurück.

Und nun, zum Hundertsten der Bewegung?

Maidon Bader hat die Wiedergänger getroffen: Paul Dorn alias St. Pauli alias

Dornimauge, der das „Dadamt Zörich“ leitet. Die Londoner Künstlerin Alice McCabe,

die wegen Dada fünf Jahre in Zürich gelebt hat. Und den tschechisch-

schweizerischen Küntler Mark Divo, der zwischenzeitlich als „König des Dada“ galt –

nun aber nur abwinkt.

Lebt Dada? Oder sind es nur letzte Zuckungen? Oder sind die Zuckungen umgekehrt

Zeichen einer Wiedergeburt?

Dada à gogo Announcement of a Rebirth

In April 1916 Dada is proclaimed at Cabaret Voltaire, Spiegelgasse, in Zurich - and

neighbour Wladimir Iljitsch Lenin calls the police because of nocturnal disturbance.

This is what legend tells us. One of numberless legends. It is true that Dada mixed

up, brimmed over, undercut Arts, broke a lot of taboos and vanished shortly after.

Seemingly.

When the Cabaret Voltaire building is meant to be sold in 2002, Dada comes back

like a revenant.

And what will happen now, with the centenary at hand?

Maidon Bader has met some of the Dada revenants: Paul Dorn aka St. Pauli aka

Dornimauge, who manages the „Dadamt Zörich“. London artist Alice McCabe, who

spent five years in Zurich examining Dada. And Czech-Swiss artist Mark Divo, who

once was titled „King of Dada“, but now waves Dada aside.

Does Dada still exist? is it just final convulsions? Or do these convulsions, on the

contrary, indicate a rebirth?
