Candlewick needs the good people who have the best interests of our community at heart to throw your hats into the ring to become Board members. I know you are out there. I have met many who fill the bill. Give it a shot. I mentioned in last month’s article some of the things that will be required of you. There will be monthly Board meetings as well as special meetings, retreats and Board workshops. You will be expected to be a part of some committees, commissions, road clean-ups and other activities. To do the job right, you will need to prepare for meetings with research and have facts and figures to back up your votes and opinions. Plan on this being a time- consuming job. You will receive phone calls, emails and in-person questions and comments from the residents. Yes, your votes will anger some no matter what your position, and that is just part of the situation you must accept. On the flip side, you will meet some great people who work tirelessly to better our way of life. You will be a part of decision-making that will affect us for years to come. All our resident’s opinions matter, but it is on your shoulders to cast the vote. There will be five seats up for grabs this time. That is the most openings in years. Be sure to look further into this issue of our paper to see the qualifications as well as the instructions for filing your resume and application. Please consider this if you are willing to put forth the effort to be a Board member who will give it your all. I hope to see several strong candidates this time. If you want more information, please feel free to call or email any Board member or the main office. We all are happy to help. A big thank you goes out to everyone who helped with the leaf collection this year, especially Jim Brefeld for taking on the responsibility of organizing the event. Without the volunteers, the leaf collection project would not take place. This year the leaf collection had a record breaking volunteer group. A special thanks to Jim Brefeld and Bonnie Marron for supplying hot chocolate and goodies for the volunteers. Again, thank you to everyone who gave up one or two of their Saturday mornings. Without the volunteers, this project (sponsored by Lake Management) would not happen. CWL Leaf Collection 2014 by Dale Miedema Photo by Chuck Hart We had an excellent turnout of volunteers and helpers to handle the tons of leaves that fall on our community each year. For each of the two Saturdays, we had an average of 15-20 volunteers to help unload the leaves from residents’ cars and trucks and load them into the containers provided by local disposal companies. The leaf program is another amenity provided to our residents as a place to bring leaves for disposal for free. At $1.50 per yard waste sticker, some of our residents might be paying a pretty hefty price for leaf disposal, to say nothing of the tedious work to stuff all those leaves in biodegradable bags. As you might imagine, residents used every way they could think of to get their leaves to the maintenance yard - some in paper bags, others in garbage cans and yet others who tied large tarps together to make a huge haul at one time. As the cars arrived, they were directed to an open con- tainer, and on average, each vehicle was unloaded in less than a minute. Some residents asked that their paper bags be emptied and returned to them since they were planning several trips and reusing the bags would keep the cost down a bit. No problem! The leaves are taken to a yard waste processing facility, usually owned and operated by the bigger names in lawn care products, where they are mixed with the existing “windrows” of grass and other yard waste that was col- lected over the summer. Windrows are long piles of grass, wood chips, leaves and any other kind of waste from your yard or garden. In early winter, it’s not uncommon to see ground-up pumpkins in the piles too. The windrows start out as piles roughly six feet high and about ten feet wide, and possibly a half mile long, which is where the decomposition begins. Each windrow has a probe inserted into the center of the pile. The temperature is carefully monitored, and when a certain temperature is reached, the entire windrow is “turned over” by a large machine that also grinds the contents a bit as well. As the machine travels down the windrow, sometimes it’s obscured from view by all the steam being released from the warm, moist material. The turning-over process is usually done every two to three weeks, and with each pass of the machine, the pile grows much smaller. By early spring, the piles appear as long, small piles of quality black dirt. The material is screened, with the finer screenings placed in bags along with a bit of fertilizer, and marketed back to you as potting soil, humus, or any variety of lawn and garden products that magically appear at our big box stores or garden centers in the springtime. So, as they say, Now you know! Many thanks to all our volunteers, men and women, for all your work in making this year’s leaf cleanup a lot of fun. Thanks to all our younger volunteers who jumped and rolled in the leaves to help pack them down - your talents were much appreciated! And a very special thanks to Evelyn Brefeld and Bonnie Marron for the great hot chocolate, coffee and scrumptious cookies. We all had so much fun, we can hardly wait for next year .... on second thought, I think next fall will be here soon enough!

2014 CANDLEWICK ANGLERS ICE FISHING TOURNAMENT SCHEDULED DATES:

DECEMBER 27TH

JANUARY 10TH

JANUARY 24TH

FEBUARY 7TH

Weather permitting all tournaments will meet at the Recreation Center Marina, but

you may drive to another location to fish once your fee is paid. Tournaments will be

held on Saturday from 7:00am until 12:00 noon unless a night event is scheduled.

You do not need to be a CWA member to sign up, but you must be a CWL resident or a

resident guest. Everyone is required to have a CWL fishing pass (or guest fishing pass)

and Illinois fishing license.

Registration is $10.00 per person and $5 optional for big fish pot (big fish is pan fish

only). It is a single man tournament so if there are two men in a shack both must

enter big fish or neither. Payout will be 100% of monies collected.

There will be a 10 pan fish limit (bluegill, crappie, & perch). Fish will be weighed at the

end of the tournament (no bass). No frozen or discolored fish will be weighed, so keep

them off the ice. A cooler or bucket of water is advised. If a tie should occur the total

length of all 10 fish of the persons tied will be used.

All state and Candlewick Lake fishing rules apply.

Christmas Dinners & Gifts for Candlewick Residents in Need

This year CWL residents will be making the holiday season merrier for 15 CWL

families, representing 33 children and 34 adults (18 years of age and older). All

families have been pre-qualified by the Belvidere/Boone County Food Pantry.

All recipient family contact information is kept confidential. Each family is

given a code number and each child is given a code letter. It is somewhat like

Secret Santa in reverse.

Each family will receive a turkey with all the trimmings to prepare a holiday

dinner as well as two gifts per child, aged 17 years and younger, residing in the

home consisting of an article of clothing as well as a non-clothing item.

Sign-up is currently taking place at the Recreation Center Activity Desk,

during normal business hours until all dinners and gifts have been selected.

Beginning on Monday, December 1st and through Friday, December 12th, there

will be containers located at the Administration Office, Recreation Center and

Savannah Oaks for anyone wishing to drop of either miscellaneous food items

to supplement the dinners, toiletries, or small unwrapped items which can be

used as stocking stuffers. We are specially in need of stocking stuffing items for

teenagers, mainly boys.

All turkeys, dinners and gifts (wrapped and tagged with the ornament you

received at the time of sign-up) need to be dropped off at the Recreation Center

on Saturday, December 13th between 1:00pm and 3:00pm for delivery that same

afternoon. Please make sure all turkeys are thoroughly frozen.

Any questions, please contact Bonnie Marron at [email protected] or 815-

765-2030 or Sandy Morse at [email protected] or 815-765-2377. Thank you and

enjoy a happy holiday season!

APPROVALS/PERMITS REQUIRED & OBTAINING BUILDING PERMITS

Any type of construction project requires approval by the Environmental Control Committee and/or Building Inspector and most cases a building permit must be issued.

Applications must be submitted and plans approved for any project. Application forms along with specification sheets for individual types of construction are available in the office or can be found in the rules under the Building Department (ECC/Building Department Rules and Regulations) on the web site at www.candlewick-lake.org. The Rules and Regulations can also be checked to find out if the construction project needs approval.

The ECC meets the first and third Wednesday of each month. Please see the schedule for the deadlines for submitting plans for approval.

After applications for construction projects are approved by the ECC, approval letters are sent out to the property owner. If the construction project requires a permit, the approval letter states at what meeting the application was approved, that a permit must be purchased in the Candlewick Lake Office before construction may begin, the cost, the office hours, a reminder that all dues, fines and fees must be paid before the permit is issued, a list of projects that also need a Boone County building permit and a notice to call the CWL Building Department for a final inspection when the project is complete.

NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS

COLLECTION CONTAINERS

Still want to participate in the Neighbors Helping Neighbors program, but are not

able to purchase a turkey, dinner or gift? Well, Starting on Monday, December 1st

and continuing through Friday, December 12th there will be containers located at

the Recreation Center, Administration Office and Savannah Oaks Club House.

These containers are for non-perishable food items, toiletries, cleaning products,

etc. which will be used to supplement the dinners. Also appreciated would be small

items, such as wrapped candy, small toys, playing cards, travel-size toiletries, etc.

which will be used as stocking stuffers. Thank you in advance for your
