Reverend David Tomlinson leads the service as churches from across Shildon and Eldon gathered together at St. John’s for an inter-faith service on Sunday 24th January.

Shildon churches gather for inter-faith service

The various churches of Shildon gathered in Saint John’s Church on Sunday evening, 24th January for a memorable service of prayer and praise. Members of the Salvation Army, Saint Thomas’ RC Church, Shildon Method-ist Church, Saint Mark’s in Eldon and Saint John’s were amongst the more than 80 plus congregation who gathered to celebrate their shared faith. Major Bob Barham Hall

of the Salvation Army preached about what it meant to be Salt and Light in the world, reflecting on the way the church is called to light up the world with the Love of God. Rev. David led the service the theme of which was chosen by churches in Latvia and then shared across the whole of Europe.“This coming together of Christians,” said Revd. David “represents our com-mitment to being followers

of Christ first and members of a particular church second. We all have much in common and as we share fellowship together that common good becomes ever more present.” The organ, played by Sylvia Barraclough of the Method-ist Church accompanied the enthusiastic singing, and Rev. David echoed the thoughts of many as he thanked everyone for their participation.

A vacant site which forms part of a former training centre at Jubilee Fields is to become the town’s latest takeaway, contrary to the wishes of Shildon Town Council.

Permission granted for takeaway shop

Durham County Councillors have given the go ahead to a new takeaway outlet in Shildon, claiming that they have no power to refuse permission even though concerns have been raised about the large number of takeaway shops in the town. County Councillors were said to have reluctantly granted planning permis-sion to turn an empty retail unit on a former training facility on Jubilee Road into a takeaway. Shildon Town Council had already submitted their ob-jection to the application, prior to the County Council meeting. In addition to the Town Council’s objection, the planning services commit-tee received seven letters of objection from the local community.Reasons against the opening of another takeaway focus on health concerns of the population, particularly

of the people living in the Jubilee Fields community where the new takeaway shop is located. There are also fears that another takeaway is not ideal for the local economy and could have an adverse impact on nearby property prices within the commu-nity.There have also been concerns that an oversup-ply of takeaways will lead to road safety problems and noise - potentially created by vehicles, customers and machines used in food preparation - odour, loss of privacy for people living nearby, as well as possible anti-social behaviour if the unit becomes a focal point for youths to congregate. This behaviour is evidenced by a similar takeaway at Coronation Avenue where reports of anti-social be-haviour have been made. There are also litter and vermin concerns and their adverse impact upon the

appearance of the area and the amenity of local residents. However, despite these worries, members of Durham County Council’s area planning committee agreed to the plans on Thursday 21st January, citing no material reasons to justify a refusal of the application.Durham County Councillor John Clare said: “Common sense says this is a bonkers application and we need to say no. “However, the recommen-dations say that we have no valid grounds on which to do so.”The County Durham Plan set a threshold of five per cent of all commercial units in Shildon town centre for hot food takeaway use, however, the total current-ly stands at 8.2 per cent. It is understood that the new outlet is considered to lie outside of the town centre boundary.

The sponsored dip was a family affair with leaders, scouts, cubs, beavers and family members all shivering in the cold at Seaton Carew.

Shildon Scouts complete a sponsored dip at Seaton Carew

First Shildon Baden Powell (BP) Scout Group braved the wintry elements to take part in a sponsored dip at Seaton Carew recently. The group raised funds for its activities and camps for the coming year. Leaders, scouts, cubs, beavers, parents and other family members took to the icy sea in order to raise money and showed that

scouting really is about being ‘one big family’.The wet and very cold affair was followed by a well-deserved hot lunch for everybody, bought from a local chip shop!As part of the fundraising, the scout group also or-ganised a Family Fun Night and, along with their Just-giving page, have success-fully raised nearly £700.A spokesperson for the 1st

A crackdown is being launched on smoking in County Durham bus stations, including Shildon Bus Station.Durham County Council officers are teaming up with bus companies Arriva and Go North East to send out the message that smoking will not be tolerated in the county’s stations. The campaign, which runs until February, will see staff visiting bus stations and issuing fines to anyone caught smoking.Since 2007, almost all indoor public places and workplaces, includ-ing vehicles, have been required to be smoke free by law. Smoking is also prohibited in all enclosed or ‘sub-stantially enclosed’ public places and workplaces, including bus stations. But despite the law, some people continue to smoke in and around county stations.A spokesperson for Durham County Council said: “We recently carried out a survey at some of the county’s bus stations which

revealed that over 71% of people surveyed have seen smoking in or around the sites. Our Public Protection Officers and Neighbour-hood Wardens will be visiting stations across the county while the campaign is running. They will be reminding people that it is against the law to smoke in bus stations, issuing fixed penalty notices to anyone caught doing so and pro-viding advice and guidance on smoke free issues. Information posters will also be displayed in the stations.Arriva and Go North East are supporting the campaign by spreading the message among their staff, especially those who work in county stations.Joanne Waller, head of environment, health and consumer protection, said: “Smoking in bus stations is illegal and yet some people continue to do it.“It is a health hazard and a nuisance to other station users and we will be taking action against anyone we catch flouting the law.”

4th Shildon Brownies thank British Engines for support

Fourth Shildon St John’s Brownies have thanked British Engines for their very kind donation to the Unit Camp Fund. A spokesperson said: “Brownies enjoy many

residential holidays during their busy year, both in a building and under canvas, however, we usually have to borrow our tentage from elsewhere. “This kind donation will

help us to purchase a tent of our own, much like the ones the girls are holding up in the picture. Thank you to British Engines again, we appreciate your very kind support.”

There has been a lot of publicity in the newspa-pers and TV about getting back in shape after Christ-mas, particularly by eating more healthily and taking more exercise. For people who have diabetes, staying in shape and eating right is even more important. They have to manage their medications, diet and must engage in regular exercise to stay well. The Independent Diabetes Trust (a charity organisa-tion for people living with diabetes run by people living with diabetes) know that this can be difficult, especially in chilly winter weather when salads seem less appetising and the need for something more substantial takes over. The organisation has recently created an in-formative booklet titled: Diabetes – Everyday Eating and this promises to help people to get back on track with their meals, as well as providing inexpen-sive menus for breakfast, lunch and evening meals,

many with winter in mind. There are 28 days of menus which focuses on on what people can eat, rather than what they cannot!A spokesperson for the Trust said: “We hope that this information will be useful to your readers with diabetes and will make living with diabetes a little easier for them.“We are happy to send your readers a copy of Diabetes – Everyday Eating and other booklets about diabetes, free of charge. “You just need to contact us on 01604 622837, e-mail [email protected] or write to IDDT, PO Box 294, Northampton NN1 4XS.”Anyone suffering from diabetes or who knows someone suffering from the illness can visit the charity’s website www.iddtinternational.org in order to receive support from other diabetics as well as receive advice on how to manage to the po-tentially dangerous illness. The website is packed with useful information, warning about certain things that might make diabetes worse, introduc-ing items that may be helpful, as well as dishing out advice on treatments for diabetes-related com-plications (e.g. diabetic retinopathy).Diabetes affects around 382 million people world-wide.By the year 2035 that figure is expected to increase to as high as 600 million people.

About one in 20 people in the UK will develop bowel cancer during their lifetime. It is the third most common cancer in the UK and the second leading cause of cancer deaths, with over 16,000 people dying from it each year according to a 2005 Cancer Research UK report. The NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme offers screening every two years to everyone aged between 60 and 69. However, this age range is currently being extended to 74. People in the age range are automatically sent an invi-tation, then their screening kit so they can complete the test at home. This process continues for two years up until the age of 69 (or 74 in areas where the extension has already taken effect). The screening test, normally called a Faecal Occult Blood (FOB) test will detect tiny amounts of blood which are normally invisible to the eye in bowel motions. The FOB in itself will not be able to tell whether a patient has cancer, however, it could trigger an invitation to further exami-nation of the bowel which could then give doctors more information. The FOB can be taken in the privacy of one’s home and the screening kit provides a simple way of collecting small samples of

bowel motions. Samples are wiped on a special card which are then to be sent in a hygienically sealed Freepost envelope to a laboratory for testing. Detailed instructions are provided with each kit.As embarassing and un-pleasant as taking the test sounds, it will only take a few minutes and is an ef-fective way of detecting bowel cancer early and potentially saving your life.A results letter should arrive within two weeks of sending a sample. Normal results show that blood was not detected in the sample, however, a normal result does not guarantee that you do not or will never develop bowel cancer (like all screening tests, the FOB is not 100% reliable) so be aware of symptoms of bowel cancer by visitingbowelcanceruk.org.uk or call 0800 840 3540.Unclear results will call for a repeat testing while abnormal results will lead to a further appointment at a screening centre. More information about screening tests can be obtained online at cancer-screening.nhs.uk.Alternatively further infor-mation can be obtained by contacting your programme hub on Freephone 0800 707 60 60, talk to your GP, visit cancerhelp.org.uk or call 0808 800 40 40.Taking part in the screen-ing reduces your chances of dying from bowel cancer.

Shildon Railway Cricket Club continues its prepara-tions for the forthcoming 2016 season with indoor nets expected to start soon. A club spokesman said: “It’s proving to be a problem getting a suitable time and venue for our indoor nets but we hope to announce something positive soon.“The club hopes, also, to recommence practice sessions for junior school pupils, who will form the backbone of a new Under 11s side. “Our juniors are the future of the club, so we hope that by introducing a younger age group, along-side the Under 15s and Under 18s, we will have players coming through the ranks for many years ahead. The club is seeking spon-sorship to help raise funds

towards a coloured kit for the Under 18’s team, to buy equipment for the Under 11’s side and to help cover the costs of cricket balls and travelling expenses. The club wishes to thank Horizon Projects, who have agreed to sponsor two games, Paul Trotter, a stalwart supporter of the club, who has generously sponsored a game and Neil Franklin, an ex-player and now regular watcher of games, who has also made a generous donation.“It’s fantastic that people in the town are so kind and that they recognise just how important it is, to keep sport going in our community,” said club sec-retary John Brennan. Anyone interested in sponsoring the club should contact John on 01388 777184 or at [email protected].

Shildon AFC Under 18’s Sunday team is on the search for new players.“The Development Centre has a very successful under 18’s Saturday squad, but some keen footballers may not be able to play on Saturdays for various reasons, such as work commitments,” said team coach, and experienced ex-Northern League player, Ritchie Howe.Ritchie, who was a junior at Middlesbrough, is a two

time Northern League Championship winner, col-lecting honours with both Blyth Spartans and Whitby Town.As well as playing at a high semi-professional level, Ritchie is an FA quali-fied coach and is keen to stress that his Sunday team “is not a run-of-the-mill Sunday kickabout side.” “If you are a young player with ambition, we want to help you fulfil that,” he said.

Shildon AFC Sunday under 18’s search for ambitious players

“We want to be able to coach players to a high enough standard that they could play in the Northern League,” said Ritchie.“That’s the level we want to be able to coach them to. The Sunday side players sometimes have commit-ments that prevent them playing on Saturdays, but we know they can reach a similar level.“The side plays in a com-petitive league, and our ambition is to get our players noticed by higher level scouts. “We are interested in players who can’t find the time to play on Saturdays for whatever reason, but who share our ambitions and have a desire to play at a higher level. Anyone interested in joining the Sunday side should get in touch with Ritchie on 07810 304 225.

Shildon remain holders of the County Cup by tech-nicality only after being dumped out of the Durham Challenge Cup by Washing-ton.A hat trick by centre forward, John Butler gave the home side a 3-0 victory. It is the second time this season that Shildon have been comprehensively beaten by the promoted

side, having lost there in the league by 4-2 earlier in the season.Washington, playing into a strong wind in the first half, opened the scoring with their first attack of the game - a free kick which caused defensive chaos in the Shildon box.Shildon were unable to convert the wind into an advantage and instead

Sorry Shildon dumped out of Durham Challenge Cup

struggled to make any clear cut chances - their closest effort coming in the closing moments when the game was already up.Washington showed that they were able to cope equally well with the opposite conditions to the first half when they doubled and then trebled their lead in the second period. If truth be told, it would be generous to suggest that Shildon were as much as a shadow of the side that has won the coveted trophy for the past two seasons. At no point in this game did they display the level of urgency or energy required to progress and were deserv-edly beaten. The Railwaymen will have a chance to avenge the heavy defeats when the same side comes calling on Dean Street this Saturday in a vital league match. Three points in the title race will go some way to softening the disappointment of this cup exit.

A charity entertainment evening will take place on Saturday 30th January at the Elm Road Club in memory of the late Shildon AFC Director, John Hay. There will be contempo-rary dances, a rock band, a charity raffle and much more.Tickets are available at
