a-half hours, will begin in the Village Hall car park, Walkers Lane, at the east end of Middridge and will include a stop at Locomo-tion to see the Mallard and its five surviving sister Lo-comotives together for the last time. Allotment break-in

Police are appealing for witnesses after a car was damaged overnight between Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd February in Sunnyside Avenue. A silver Toyota was parked

with its nearside to the kerb when the front nearside panel of the vehicle was damaged. Anyone with information should contact Shildon NPT on Tel 101.

A 44 year-old man from Gurney Valley died after his cigarette accidentally ignited the chair he was sitting in and caused a house fire, an inquest has heard.Durham Coroners’ Court was told how Ernest Brian Metcalfe was found in the attic room of the property at around 1am on Monday 10th June. Firefighters had rescued another man and

a woman from the house in Gurney Valley, but were unable to reach Metcalfe.Lee Asprey, Fire Investiga-tion Manager, described how the chair had been completely destroyed in the blaze and the rest of the attic room had suffered extensive damage. He also said that there were signs of old cigarette burns in the carpet and on a sleeping bag.

Ernest, who had been known to smoke in his bedroom, had twice visited Close House Club earlier that day and was the equivalent of three times over the drink-drive limit.Deputy Coroner for County Durham, Crispin Oliver commented, “The most likely scenario is he had been smoking and he ac-cidentally ignited the chair he had been sitting in.”

Shildon Town Council have recently agreed that the policy for under 18s birthday parties at the Civic Hall be amended to only allow bookings for children’s parties up to the age of 12. This follows concerns from Civic Hall staff and town

councillors regarding the behaviour of teens at recent functions. Shildon Town Council’s February meetings will be held in the Council Chambers on Monday 10th February from 6.30pm. Members of the public are invited to attend.

Birthday party policy change

Elm Road Club's function room was packed out for a fundraising event to mark the anniversary of the passing of John Hay, a much-loved member of the Shildon community. The sell-out crowd were treated to a night of 60s music, performed by the Travellin Band and included a raffle and auction to add to the fundraising total. The event, organised by John's partner, Sue Charlton and the family, raised the fantastic sum of over £2,200 on the night for causes close to John and the family's heart: Diabetes UK, the Artificial Limb Centre of the John Cook Hospital and Shildon Football Club.

Towards the end of the evening, Sue and the family took to the stage to thank all

Sheffield’s E.I.S arena was once again the destination for Shildon’s young starlets as the inaugural Northern u13 / 15 age group Champi-onships took place on 2nd February.U13 girls Maddie Wells and Rachel Bennett both quali-fied for the 60m semi-finals with comfortable wins from their heats and, as the races increased in im-portance, the girls simply increased their pace. In the semi-finals Maddie found herself up against Chesterfield’s unbeaten Northern 200m champion Nazhrah Simpson. Cool and unfased, Maddie composed herself after a false start from one of the other athletes. She reacted with lighten-ing reflexes, catapulting herself forwards as the gun sounded and promptly inflicted Nazhrah’s first defeat on her, as she secured victory by half a metre in a new club record and personal best perfor-mance. Semi-final number two pitted Rachel against Der-byshire’s Florance Beedie.Florance was quick away but Rachel’s now trade-mark drive phase gave her

the upper hand until easing off over the last 10m, which enabled Florance to secure the win with a late dip for the line. As the girls lined up for the final, their 3rd race in only 90 minutes, it was apparent Shildon were the only club represented by two athletes. Nazhrah Simpson was the 1st to show, along with Florance Beedie, however late surges from the Shildon

girls ended in a blanket finish that was too close to call. With only 1/10th of a second separating the 1st four places, a photo finish was required to prove fast finishing Maddie narrowly failed to overhaul Nazhrah as she crossed the line 2nd in another pb and new club record of 8.35s. Rachel had also managed to overturn her semi-final result to gain 3rd place and the bronze medal.

Shildon Railway Cricket Club is looking to the future, as it resurrects its Under 18s team and intro-duces, for the first time, an Under 11s age group team. The club will now field four junior teams, competing in the Durham Cricket Board South West Division, in the forthcoming season.“We recognise that juniors are the way forward and that, by developing our youngsters, we can help ensure the future of the club,” said Chairman John Brennan. The club will be approach-ing each of the town’s primary schools and hopes to arrange visits to the schools by coaches from the Durham Cricket Board, as well as providing its own weekly coaching sessions at the ground throughout the season.“We’re looking to build our Under 11 team around Year 6 and Year 5 pupils and hope that these youngsters will come along in numbers, enjoy the coaching and go on to play for the club for many years to come. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if maybe just one of them went on to bigger and better things and played for the county or even for England?” added the chairman. Sunnydale School has, for many years, provided the bulk of players for the other junior sides with teenagers from all around the locality also represent-ing the teams. The club needs players from Years 7 & 8 for the

Under 13s team and from Years 9 & 10 for the Under 15s side and will be de-lighted to welcome players at all levels of ability. The Under 18s will be made up from those now too old for the Under 15 age group and needs rein-forcements from players who are under the age of 18 on 31st August 2014. “We understand that we’re competing with football, which is a more popular sport and seems to have a season which goes on all year round these days, but we’re confident that there are youngsters out there who could make a success of cricket and enjoy being part of a team in a differ-ent sport,” added a club spokesman. The club is especially pleased that some of the younger senior players from within the club have come forward to help run and coach the junior teams. Joining stalwarts John Young and Mal Dover are Matthew Summerbell, Chris Young, Michael Lumley, Andrew Paterson and Dan Richardson. It is hoped that parents will also get involved, as the club believes that there can be a role for almost anyone within the club, no matter what skills and experience they may have. More information will be going out to local schools and will be published in The Town Crier but in the meantime, information can be accessed via the club’s Facebook Page and on the Play Cricket website.
