The Autumn Steam Gala returns to Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th Septem-ber. Creating the theme and feel of the 1940s there will be vehicles from the national collection
on display, including V2 Class Green Arrow loco-motive (already resident in Shildon). The V2 Class locomotives are famed for helping the allied forces win the Second World War. Joining Green Arrow there will be a special guest from the national collection with
N15 Class locomotive Sir Lamely in steam. The N15 Class - like the V2 - were often used at the head of freight and troop trains during the conflict. The event will also be the last chance to see S160 2253 take the outdoor stage at Shildon. S160 has been on temporary display at the museum since 2014. It is an ex-US Army Trans-portation Corps locomotive that was built by Baldwins in Philadelphia, USA, in 1943. It is one of more than 4,000 similar locomo-tives built between 1943 and 1946 to serve the US Military in Europe, Africa and parts of Asia. The UK's oldest operating steam locomotive, The Furness Railway No. 20, will be in steam giving passenger train rides (for a small charge). There will also be a variety of trade stands.Plus on Saturday 19th, between 10.30am and 4pm, meet the author George Turner Smith and find out more about the engineer Thomas Hackworth.Turner Smith’s new book explores both his personal and professional life and reveals the story of a man who was overlooked by history.
Wednesday 18th November will see the presentation of the Shildon Young People’s Awards 2014/15 at Shildon Civic Hall, to reward the efforts of young people in Shildon. A spokesperson for the event said, “Day after day, young people make a contribution to our society and far too often this goes unnoticed and unre-warded. From sport to the arts, from the unknown to the extraordinary, SCYPAN wants to say a big ‘thank you’. “This is a chance for you to make your contribution by nominating an individual or group for their achieve-ments during 2014/15. “Do you know a young person who is always helping others, or a young person who has achieved their goal despite great disadvantage and obsta-cles? Does your group have a leader who inspires you
to go that extra mile? Do you know a young person who has excelled in sport? “If the answer is yes then ring us on 01388 772563 or email [email protected] for a nomination form and criteria.” Categories include a Performing Arts Award, Creative Arts Award, Sports Award, Young Person’s Choice (Adult Award), School Award, Community Champion and the Chloe Clark Special Achievement and Recogni-tion Award. The event is supported by the Shildon Children and Young People’s Action Network, livin, Tearaways Theatre Group and Shildon Town Council. For further details, contact Kath Regan at Shildon Children and Young People’s Action Network, c/o Council Offices, Civic Hall Square, Shildon, 01388 772563.

Dear Editor,
I would just like to say, with regards to the recent Shildonbury event, how much
it was a privilege to be part of a great day’s entertainment.
We were a six strong security team looking after proceedings, and everyone
enjoyed themselves without any hint of trouble.
Everyone was so polite and nobody objected to necessary bag searches on the way
into the site. On leaving at the end of the festival everyone bid us farewell and
thanked us, saying how much they had enjoyed the event.
Obviously there is another side to things with certain people complaining about
noise. This is a crying shame really, because this event is what has been needed
for the town for years. Let’s hope it continues to thrive.
Here’s to Shildonbury 2016,
Peter Davidson, Shildonbury Security Team
Dear Editor,
Out there are four small bumble bees who donated £12 to our Busy Bees charity.
Arynn, Kelsie, Elle & Tommy saved their pennies, they were so thoughtful and needed some recognition for their effort.
Once again, thank you for your kindness.
The Busy Bees Fundraising Group.
Dear Editor,
Shildon Beavers have returned from their holidays having really enjoyed them-selves.
During the holidays, group outings were arranged and the Beavers who attended thoroughly enjoyed half day visits to Bamboozles and Spennymoor Swimming Pool. They also enjoyed full day visits to Hall Hill Farm where they stroked rabbits, goats and various other animals and fed them too. There was a ride on a tractor where they saw llamas and highland cattle. They also ‘milked’ a cow.
Another full day trip was to Hardwick Park where they fed the ducks and played in a fort, which we nicknamed Mafekin. They defended it from warring tribes. They also did the Gruffalo Trail.
There are one or two other outings planned in the future. Anyone wishing to join can text or ring 07587 691 271.
Many thanks,Helen Mahoney,New Shildon (All Saints) Baden Powell Scouts.

The sun shone on Tony’s garden on Saturday 5th September as people arrived for ‘Tea at Tony’s’. Raffle tickets were bought and sold, the tombola mobbed, and many a cup of tea or coffee was drunk. Tony Pearson had opened up his Waverley Terrace garden to raise funds for Shildon Alive! (A Saint John’s Church Project),
along with other church community projects. Revd David commented, “Saint John’s is a parish church, working to encour-age abundant life across the whole parish of Shildon and Middridge.“It costs £143 every day to keep the church building going and we don’t receive any funding from outside of Shildon.
“When people respond with such generosity it enables us to go the extra mile, and then another after that. “We are so grateful to Tony for his kind gesture which was reflected in the smiles of all those who came along and enjoyed his beautiful garden”. The event raised a fantas-tic £305.
The September meetings of Shildon Town Council will be held on Monday 14th September in the Town Council Chambers, Civic Hall Square from 6.30pm. Councillors will discuss a number of planning applications, in-cluding the proposed hot food takeaway on Jubilee Road. They will also consider an

Would you like to become involved with a project that focuses on the Stockton and Darlington Railway? If so, go along to an event at Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon on Tuesday 15th September at 10am.The project is called Walking and Studying the Line and is funded by a Heritage Lottery Fund Award, which was given to the Friends of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. The Friends recently held a two day conference at Locomotion to debate the importance of the railway and the potential for a World Heritage Site Status bid in time for the 200th
anniversary celebrations in 2025. This was attended by railway groups, local politicians including MP Phil Wilson and a range of national speakers including the director of the NRM.Cllr Trish Pemberton, Chair of the Friends of the S&DR commented, “To achieve our aims we need everyone with an interest to help us collect information and identify the surviving parts and structures of the line. “We wish to encourage everyone, from learned historians and railway en-thusiasts to school children to participate. The survey work will involve research-ing archives and docu-ments. It will also involve
fieldwork, surveying and possibly archaeological ex-cavations.”The project is designed to complement work being undertaken by Durham, Darlington and Stockton Councils, who are already looking ahead to the cel-ebrations for 2025.If you are interested in getting involved and at-tending the workshop, contact Shildon Town Councillor Trish Pember-ton, Chair, Friends of the S&DR on 01388 833229 or at [email protected] contact Caroline and Niall Hammond, Archaeo-Envi-ronment, on 01833 650573.

of bells across the country.Trevor Thompson, tower captain commented, “The tradition of ringing bells in celebration of national events goes back hundreds of years. “It is just brilliant that Shildon can join in and that our award winning team of bellringers aged 8 and up are always ready to go!”

New ministers walk & pray
New Superintendent Meth-odist Minister based in Shildon, Rev Andy Bryer, along with his new col-league in Bishop Auckland, Rev John Purdy, learned much about their new congregations and the communities in which they are set when they under-took a walk of their parish in celebration of their
new posts on Bank Holiday Monday. The two men of the cloth began their walk in Cockfield at 7.30am, visiting all fifteen chapels around Hamsterley, Bishop Auckland, Shildon and Newton Aycliffe before finishing at Heighington before sundown. They took the time to say
a prayer at each pitstop, thanking God for the various communities and asking a blessing for those who live and work in the area. Rev Purdy, who hails from Northern Ireland said, “It was a spiritual experience and it was an honour to pray with people at all of the chapels.”
In their ‘high vis’ jackets Rev Andy Bryer (left) and Rev John Purdy (right), join the congregation for a cuppa at Shildon Methodist Church partway through their walk.

The last couple of weeks within Shildon Running Club have seen a number of the senior section intensify their marathon training in preparation for the forth-coming York Marathon. This didn’t stop an excel-lent turnout and support for the inaugural Auckland Castle 5 mile trail race on Sunday 31st August. This event was in part organised by members of the Running Club, Eddie Murphy, Chris Griffith and Gareth Shaw. Held in the grounds of Auckland Castle the race was well supported by the

Shildon Railway C.C. 1st XI needs just three points from their two remaining games to be assured of the North Yorks & South Durham Premiere Cricket League Division 3 title. The leaders took 20 points from their game at Maltby on Saturday, in the warm September sunshine. Maltby fielded only ten men and put up some resistance in 42.3 overs, making 117 for 9. Shildon survived early trouble by the endeavours
of Adam Jenkin (32 not out) and Peter Stanwix (37 not out) to win by seven wickets inside 23 overs. On Saturday the Railwaymen look to secure the champi-onship when they entertain Thornaby at the Sportsfield, starting at 12.30pm. On Sunday the 2nd team went down, at home, to Billingham Synthonia but are still hopeful of a top five finish, with one game to go. Only Adam Bayles (62) looked comfortable against

Lotto rolloverThe latest Shildon AFC Sup-porters Club lotto numbers were drawn on Sunday evening at the football ground clubhouse on Dean Street. The six numbers out of the bag were: 4, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 14. There were no winners of the jackpot, which now
rolls over to £500. The consolation prize of £25 was won by T Bussey. To win the jackpot next week, players are required to choose the matching 6 numbers from 18. Tickets cost just £2 per play and are available at various outlets in the town.
Top of the league Shildon AFC travelled to second placed Washington FC on Tuesday 8th September in the Ebac Northern League, with the Railwaymen going down 4 – 2. The Mechanics are the surprise team of the season, having not lost a single game so far in all competitions. They were ahead after just 90 seconds when captain Mark Davison fired past Shildon’s stand-in keeper Jake Johnson. Shildon thought they had equalised after 6 minutes
but Mark Doninger’s shot was ruled off-side. They did level on 11 minutes however, when Paul Connor found Jonathan Davis.Half Time: Washington FC 1 Shildon AFC 1. Washington were ahead straight from the kick-off when a right wing cross found Michael Cochrane, whose long range drive beat injured keeper Johnson. The home side piled on the pressure with Shildon’s Dan Groves clearing off the line. It was 3 – 1 on 69 minutes when a right corner gave
Ross Preston a free header. Minutes later Washington’s Michael Coghlan’s free kick hit the bar. Against the run of play Shildon pulled a goal back when Bobby Moore fired low into the bottom corner, but Washington extended their lead on 80 minutes when John Butler headed home from close range. Final Score: Washington FC 4 Shildon AFC 2.Shildon can have no qualms about the result as Wash-ington were the far better side on the night, particu-larly in the second half.
