The area already suffered an earthquake just a couple of months ago, weakening many structures which were then destroyed by the 200mph winds that slammed into them. Shildon’s Naomi Tomlinson, daughter of Revd David, Vicar of Saint John’s Church, set-up and runs a charity in the Philippines for street children. Writing to her family, Naomi told them of the trauma that was affecting the whole nation, the vast numbers dead and the colleagues and supporters of the charity who had lost family and friends. Whilst desperate people have been looting in Manila, Naomi’s street children have decided to make a difference. Naomi wrote, “Watching the coverage in the centre, one of the kids put it perfectly - they helped us, now we must help them. “These are children with nothing, and giving from their ‘nothing’ has already meant that two boxes of clothes have been sent on to the worst affected areas. “The children quite simply sent what they were not wearing, giving because they could, blazing a trail for us to follow.” If you would like to join the street kids in helping, Saint John’s Church will be open for gifts of money to be sent out on Sunday morning. There will also be an opportunity during the service to light a candle as a way of standing with those who have lost everything. The service will begin at 9.30am. On Wednesday 6th November, between 10pm and 10.30pm, a stone was thrown at an address on Garbutt Street damaging a

window. If you have any information relating to this incident contact Shildon Police on 101.

At approximately 6.15pm on Thursday 7th November, a number of youths were congregated outside the shops on Jubilee Estate. The youths were described as being rowdy and some were preventing customers from entering the shops. During the disturbance the shutter doors to Tasty Bites were kicked, which subse-quently caused damaged to

the window. When the youths made their way from the shops, a car wing mirror was kicked off on Coronation Avenue. A spokesperson for Shildon Police commented, “This kind of behaviour is totally unacceptable, and anyone who has information about who was responsible is urged to contact Shildon Police on 101.”

Locomotion, the National Railway Museum at Shildon, is currently hosting a display by the Aycliffe and District Bus Preservation Society, which is available to see until Monday 18th November.

The display features two vehicles from the ADBPS collection – the 1940s Heartbeat bus and the 1950s coach – which demonstrate the progression in mid-20th century bus design.

110 dancers from across the North East and beyond turned out to wish popular drummer, Howard Miles, a happy 65th Birthday on Saturday 9th November, at the Shildon Masonic Hall.Howard, who has played drums on the local dancing scene for over 40 years, was also resident drummer at the Grosvenor WMC in Bishop Auckland. He was guest of honour at the fundraising buffet and 50-50 dance, which was organised by friends and family and raised an amazing £730 for Cancer Research. Howard, who will also be known to many from his daytime jobs as a TV engineer for D.E.R. and later Radio Rentals, was delighted that an event to celebrate his birthday had raised such a tremendous amount for the charity selected by himself and his

wife Kathy, and he thanked everyone involved for their generous support.

At a Charity Night in the Civic Hall on Friday 8th November, the four local Theatre Groups (Tykes, CATS, The Tearaways and Centre Stage) raised £534 for Children In Need with their two-hour show. The organisers wish to sincerely thank all the

young and not-so-young people who took part and entertained in the show. They would also like to thank the parents and the public for supporting the event.A collection for Children In Need will also be taken during the intervals of

Centre Stage Theatre Group’s latest production, ‘The Witches,’ which will be taking place at the Civic Hall on Friday 15th November at 7.30pm, Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th at 2pm. Tickets are £4.50 for adults and £2.50 children and concessions.

Monday Club celebrates 20th anniversary

Members of the Monday Club with Reverend David Tomlinson.

A weekly club has celebrated 20 years since its inception. The Monday Club at Lilburn Community Lounge was formed in 1993 by the Shildon Centre and was run by two volunteers, Mrs Doreen Squince and Mrs Frances Franklin - who still run the club today. The aim of the club is to

provide a social outing every Monday, when the members are picked up from their homes in the Shildon Community Bus. Monthly trips are held for the ladies, with recent outings including a visit to Locomotion, where Age UK provided lunch and a talk; and a trip to the Little Theatre in Middlesbrough,

where they enjoyed a show. The club is able to enjoy the Community Bus thanks to a donation of £1,500 from former Mayor Gareth Howe’s Mayor’s Fund in 2010. In celebration of the milestone birthday, the Mayor of Shildon’s consort, Shirley Quinn, visited the club.

Joyce fights her fears for charity

A Shildon resident has, at the age of 62, created a ‘bucket list’ of challenges which she hopes to complete before turning 65.Joyce Bennett, from Elm Drive, has already gotten a tattoo, which was at the top of her list, but this was an easy task compared to her next undertaking! Joyce explained, “The next was to face my greatest fear - the one that has been known to bring tears to my eyes... spiders.”In order to complete the task, Joyce visited Coast to Coast exotic pet store in Darlington on Saturday 9th November, where she plucked up the courage to hold a Chilean Rose Tarantula.Joyce not only used the

experience to help herself overcome her fears, but also to help someone else. She was sponsored by friends and family to raise funds for Shildon youngster Sophie Foster, who is battling cancer. She said, “I was terrified, but I thought, seeing as though I am facing my
