No business owner looks forward to disciplining their employees. In a perfect world, we wouldn’t have to. Unfortunately sometimes employees behave or perform in such a way that needs to be addressed. And ad-dressing discipline issues can be sticky ground for employers. Just like with everything else, you want to make sure that you do it right and don’t land yourself in the hot seat. Both performance reviews and disci-pline actions are important functions of an employer’s job. Conducting performance reviews is a good best practice for any business, regardless of how your employees are performing. Reviews can help good employees to get better and struggling employees to know what they need to focus on. Reviews also lay the groundwork for future discipline if an employee does not make the necessary changes. When performing reviews, make sure they are written down and go into the employees file. You should have a standard review form that is used for all of your employees. Be fair and accurate in your reviews. Don’t focus on the just the positive or just the negative. Try to tell the employee three things they are doing well and three things they could improve upon. Don’t coddle them but don’t demoralize them either. If the feedback from the review is not well received or adhered to, you can move forward to actual discipline. When considering discipline matters, make sure that you treat all similarly situated employees the same. While the subject of the discipline may be negative, take a positive approach to it. Help your employees plan for success and assume that they will be able to turn things around. The goal of the discipline should not be to get rid of the employee but rather to help them to improve in their job. Effective discipline strategies can help you to retain, train and optimize your workforce. And of course, document, document, document. Re-member, if it’s not written down, it didn’t happen. Finally, follow through on what you say. If you give an employee 90 days to improve their behavior, don’t extend it to 100. Stick to whatever plan you set and be consistent. CHAMBER MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Infinity Spa & Salon Lori Taylor Submitted by Sharyn Loughry This month’s Chamber member spotlight business is found in a newer, custom-built building on Highway 101, just south of Elk Valley Road. Upon entering the lobby, you take a deep, ap-preciative breath and relax. The décor invites you to enjoy elegance and beauty, with none of the hectic feel of modern society. While you wait, you will be offered coffee, tea or peppermint-infused water. Lori Taylor is a home-town girl who is here for the long haul. Since her focus is helping her community, Lori buys decorations and services from local businesses. She also refers clients to other local salons when she feels their desires would be better met elsewhere. In fact, her philosophy is “It’s all about the client.” This philosophy displays itself in different facets of Infinity Spa & Salon: clients can listen to their favorite music when in their treatment room and the staff does not compete with each other, but focuses on what is best for their clients. At times, they even consult with each other for suggestions when doing someone’s hair! But, as the name suggests, they are more than a salon, they are a spa. They offer many different services: manicures, pedicures, hydrotherapy, facials, full body waxing, massages, bath salts, body scrubs and masks, to name a few – each in their own private room. However, if you and a friend both want to have a mani-cure or a pedicure at the same time, you are welcome to enjoy them together, in the same room. They also have couple specials and are happy to offer gift certificates, which make wonderful gifts. Not only does each treatment room have its own music system, but the building is arranged so you can travel from treat-ment room to treatment room unseen by people in the lobby. Infinity Spa & Salon already has loyal cus-tomers, some of whom even come from as far away as Eureka and Bandon. But how did Lori get to this point? Personally, she enjoys making people feel good and the beauty field provides the perfect opportunity to do just that. Therefore she studied both hair and skin at Vogue Beauty Academy under Dean Valero, who encouraged her as she planned her own business. She especially credits her parents for their support and friendship throughout the process of building and starting her own business

2 ½ years ago; her parents also modeled working hard for what you want, and helped her learn to be thankful for what she has. They were also a major help in the building and decorating process. Her sister, Mary, a local businesswoman, taught her a lot about running a business and her husband, Eric, of whom she is very proud, has been a continual support in every way. So head on down to Infinity Spa & Salon, where “Infinity” means you can forget about time and relax with “no ending or pressure”. Lori and her co-workers will welcome you to their

family, listen to what you want, and do their utmost to pamper you.
