The communications industry is at anhistoric turning point represented by the intersection of three mega-trends:hyperconnectivity, communications-enabled applications, and true broad-band. Customer and consumer demandfor seamless “connectedness” all the time, anywhere, on any device is driving thesetrends. They also present our industrywith a challenge and an opportunity asbig as those we saw in the 1990s with thefiber, Internet and wireless revolutionsand in the 1980s with the digital trans-formation of communications.

Hyperconnectivity

A trend in which anything that can be connected to the network, will beconnected — encompassing person-to-person communication, person-to-machine and machine-to-machine.Hyperconnectivity is fueling hugeincreases in bandwidth demand becauseof the complexity, diversity and integra-tion of new applications and devicesusing the network. The complexitycreated by this explosion of devices and machine-to-machine traffic on thenetwork is a challenge that businesseswill have to face and solve.

Communications-Enabled

Applications

The second mega-trend is that ofcommunications enabling all applica-tions to create a much richer communi-cations experience and more productiveenterprise. Nortel believes this willcreate significant new opportunities atalmost every turn. Nortel is partneringwith companies like Microsoft, IBMand SAP to bring together the richnessof new IT applications with the powerof the telecom world.

True Broadband

A quality communications experienceanywhere, anytime on any device. Withthe exponential growth of informationand applications crossing the network, the network itself must be upgraded tosupport the new high-bandwidthrequirements. It will become essentialfor example, for people to be able to doon their mobile devices what they nowdo on their PCs, including the capa-bility to view video. And this requiresinstant, always-available, high-speedaccess to the Internet — everywhere.

Of these trends, hyperconnectivity is the catalyst that is laying the foundationfor change and for a new era in thecommunications world. By 2010,Nortel estimates there will be 10 devicesconnected to the network for everyperson using them and the network will need to support five billionconnection points.

In short, we are moving toward an erawhere anything that can be connectedand would benefit from beingconnected will be connected. Nortel’sstrategic direction across our business— R&D, marketing, customer service, choice of strategic partners, and mergersand acquisitions — is focused onmaking it simple and profitable for ourcustomers to capitalize on this turningpoint and make these connections.

Nortel has putin place a broad ecosystem of alliancesand partners, including game-changingwork with Microsoft and IBM, to givecustomers the quickest, simplest, mostflexible, and most cost-effective journeyto transform their enterprise.

Mobility and Convergence

Mobility and convergence are our focus— enabling our customers to deliverwireless broadband today. It allowscustomers to move their networks towardthe kind of IP-based infrastructure thatwill enable them to benefit from newrevenue-generating services and controlthe costs of their network infrastructure.Cost-effective, next-generation networkswill be access agnostic, their effectivenessnot dependent on what device isconnecting to them. The next-generationof mobility will be driven by 4G in thecarrier space. Wireline and wirelessnetworks will converge around an IPplatform.

Services and Solutions

Services and solutions are the essence ofBusiness Made Simple. Hyperconnectivitywill place enormous stress on operatorsand enterprises to ensure their networksare deployed, managed and evolved tosupport the increased capacity andcomplexity — and to do so whilecontaining costs.
