    1 Compatibility in WCDMA RAN

    TheWCDMA

    RAN

    has3GPP

    -standardized interfaces between3G

    subsystems, which

    allows the operators to continue their existing 2G and 3G supplier policy if they wish to

    do so. Depending on the operator's requirements, NSN supplies individual network

    elements (NEs) or a complete turnkey system.

    3G network architecture is presented in Figure 1: Radio access network architecture.

    Both radio access network (RAN) and core network (CN) are illustrated in the figure to

    show the relation between them. The figure is a logical representation of the network

    elements, interfaces, and their relations in the integrated network.

    The compatibility of a release or system product guarantees the following:

    New product releases or system products do not hinder the performance of existing

    products.

    Product releases or system products that have an impact on other NEs work in the

    network as planned. New products can be properly installed with other relevant or existing products if

    necessary.

    The performance of a functionality might depend on several product releases. In such a

    case, a number of new product releases need to be installed before the functionality is

    fully available.

    The idea of compatibility in the context of WCDMA RAN and Flexi Direct covers the

    following:

    compatibility statements required for standardization purposes

    the compatibility of the NSN network, which translates into the compatibility of

    releases introducing both RAN and CN elements the compatibility feature with a focus on WCDMA/Flexi Direct RU30 and

    WCDMA/Flexi Direct RU40.

    2 Standardization compatibility

    The WCDMA RU40 system release is based on 3GPP Release 9, 06/2011. Change

    requests for 3GPP Releases 7 - 9 can have an impact on RU30 EP1, RU30 EP2 and

    RU40 system releases.
