Accepting Nominations for Ransom Service Award

The Community Foun-dation for the Twin Tiers (CFTT) announces that nominations for the Wil-liam “Bill” Ransom, III Community Service Award are now being accepted. This is the first year the award is being given. William “Bill” Ransom, III passed away on July 10, 2014, after a long and cou-rageous battle with cancer. He was a Valley business-person and was extremely active in his community. Bill served on many boards and committees and always provided leadership and vision to all the organiza-tions with which he was involved. The fund was established in his name to hon-or his steadfast commitment and dedica-tion to making the community a stronger and better place in which to live, work, and enjoy life. The William “Bill” Ransom, III Community Service Award will be given annually to someone who exemplifies

Bill’s beliefs and who gives their time, commitment and leadership to the communi-ty. It was created at CFTT by the Waverly Rotary Club in Bill’s memory; many community groups, busi-nesses, family, and friends for whom Bill had an im-pact have contributed to the fund, enabling it to be large enough to give this award annually.

To nominate a Valley per-son for this award, summit a brief essay about why you are nominating him or her. Include your name and contact in-formation and the nominee’s name and contact information by June 16, 2016, to [email protected] or by mail to: CFTT, 104 W. Lockhart St., Sayre PA 18840.

Gettysburg Battlefield Threatened

Calling it a direct threat to the re-maining hallowed ground of the Get-tysburg battlefield, the Gettysburg Bat-tlefield Preservation Association launched a campaign against a pro-posed roadway extension designed to place big box stores and other com-mercial development on open land that was directly involved in the battle and its aftermath. The proposed extension of Camp Letterman Drive by Straban Township, PA, and a developer represents the greatest threat to Gettysburg battlefield and hallowed ground in many years. All who honor the service and sacri-fice of the soldiers who fought at Get-tysburg – and all who value our na-tion’s history must rise up and stop it. This street project allows access to undeveloped land for big box stores and other development that would per-manently wipe out historic sites. Once lost, it will be lost forever. The Camp Letterman Drive Extension project will: 1. Destroy battlefield land - The land occupied by the Confederate Ar-my as their first day concluding battle line, Confederate artillery sites and the advance of Confederate regiments for their attacks on Culp’s Hill and the Union right flank on the second and third days – forever lost. 2. Destroy a portion of the remain-ing Camp Letterman Field Hospital site - Camp Letterman, created after the battle, was the largest such hospital of the Civil War and the first in which both Confederate and Union wounded and dying were treated togeth-er, setting a standard for the rest of the war and many years beyond. Soldiers who died from their wounds were buried there, with most being removed and reinterred at other sites. At the end of World War I, Spanish Influenza tore through Camp Colt in Gettysburg, com-manded by future President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and troops were sent out of the fa-cility to encamp at the old

Camp Letterman site. 3. Destroy the viewshed of the bat-tlefield - All the big box store and other development along the extended roadway will be plainly visible from Culp’s Hill, Lee’s headquarters, Herr’s Ridge and much of the battlefield’s northern area, especially if multi-story buildings such as hotels, are included. This runs completely counter to the years of effort by the National Park Service to restore battlefield areas to their 1863 appearance. 4. Radically Destroy American His-tory - We cannot tell the whole story of what happened during the pivotal Battle of Gettysburg if this large por-tion of Confederate fighting ground and staging areas is destroyed. 5. Encroach on restored Historic Daniel Lady Farm - The view-shed of the farm will be largely wiped out. A Confederate division headquarters and field hospital during the battle, the farm underwent a $2.5 million restora-tion to make it a fully-restored 1863 Civil War site, and is in near-constant use for American living history and Civil War events, Boy Scout encamp-ments, public tours and other history-related activities. Express opposition to the project - sign an on-line petition at www.gbpa.org. Write Tony Sand-ers, Chairman, Board of Supervisors, Straban Twp, 1745 Granite Station Rd, Gettysburg, PA 17325; Fax 717-334-0061; call 717-334-4833.

BBQ, Yard & Craft Sale - June 11 The Vestal Center UMC Men's Annu-al Chicken BBQ and Yard & Craft Fair will be held on Saturday, June 11, at 478 West Hill Road in Vestal. Yard & Crafts

Community Bank Celebrates 150th Birthday

By Jill Darling Community Bank celebrated its 150th birthday. White balloons printed with the 150 Years logo floated atop an outdoor sign at the Little Meadows, Pennsylvania, branch announcing the festivities. Balloons decorated the inside of the bank for their May 20th party for the community. Manager Doug Jackson, his staff and bank patrons celebrated the company’s 150th Anniversary with cake, punch, cookies and gold foil-covered chocolate coins. The staff wore maroon shirts with the 150-year logo and the motto “Bank Happy.” Customer Service Representative Denise Campbell, a 12-year veteran of the business, Amanda Bullins, head teller, employed for six years, and Justin

Little, a yearlong teller, greeted custom-ers and invited them to have cake and goodies. Community Bank N. A. was founded in 1866 in Canton, New York as Hun-gerford & Co. Bank and later renamed St. Lawrence County National Bank. The bank was renamed Community Bank N.A. in the early 1990s and is now headquartered in DeWitt, NY. It started with one branch and currently has nearly 200 locations across NY and northeast PA, with more than 2,000 employees. Community Bank has branches in Owego, Johnson City, Nichols, Mont-rose, Towanda, and Lawton.

Akshar, Lourdes, YES Honor Local Student Leaders

YES LEADers from Owego Free Academy are recognized for their com-mitment to educating others about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

Senator Akshar and Lourdes Hospital President/CEO Kathy Connerton recognize the efforts of Advisor Janice Barto, Zachary Hutchinson, Der-rick Barto, Malley Bowen and Kirsten Schweiger, representing the YES LEADS group from Tioga Central High School.

Senator Fred Akshar, Lourdes Pres-ident/CEO Kathy Connerton and YES Safe Choices were joined by local par-ents, teachers and school administra-tors to honor more than 650 Broome, Tioga and Chenango YES LEADers at the YES LEADers Change Lives Recognition Reception. YES LEADers are middle and high school students who visit classrooms and use hands-on activities to teach local elementary school students about the dangers of substance abuse, the importance of self-esteem and the val-ue in making healthy choices as they grow up. “I’m blown away by the inspiration our YES LEADers provide to their peers and others,” said Senator Akshar. “Their commitment to living a drug free lifestyle is providing young-er generations with life lessons that are invaluable to our community.”

As a four year YES LEADer, Tioga Central senior Samantha Wood be-lieves the program has helped her grow into a more confident person. “I believe that I’ve helped the students to realize that choices affect everything around them, and that being yourself and having your own identity is a good thing.” YES Safe Choices is a partnership between Senator Akshar and Lourdes Hospital. Owego-Apalachin, Tioga Central, and Waverly school districts participate in the YES LEADS pro-gram. This year’s LEADers, representing 13 school districts, will have presented to over 4,500 elementary students by the end of the school year. For more information about YES Safe Choices and YES LEADS, visit www.YesSafeChoices.org.

Upstate Shredding Wins Award Upstate Shredding - Weitsman Recy-cling has been named the world’s leader in scrap & recycling by Platts, the prem-ier international publication in the recy-cling industry. Adam Weitsman, owner of the Owego-based company, believes this award is a great honor and testament of his company's commitment to exception-al operations and dynamic growth strate-gies. Adam Weitsman was on hand to accept the award at the ceremony last month in London. “This recognition is one of the top

moments of my career,” Weitsman said. “To have been selected as the winner when international judges are reviewing companies, public and private, from all over the world is an astonishing accom-plishment. Thank you to all my employ-ees and their families for their support this year on helping Upstate Shredding get this award for Global Scrap Compa-ny of the Year. I'm humbled that we can bring this award home to the USA where it belongs. “

Dear editor, I participated in Reality Check’s ciga-rette butt pick up at a local park. I was surprised how much of the garbage we picked up was cigarette butts. By the time we were done, the fingers of my gloves had turned yellow from all the tar and the butts smelled really gross. Did you know that cigarette butts contain thousands of toxic chemicals? So, every time it rains, chemicals like lead and arsenic are leached into the ground and water. Cigarette butts are not biode-gradable. They make our parks look

dirty. Also, cigarette smoke has thou-sands of harmful chemicals in it. I start-ed thinking about all the little kids and families who like to go to the park and felt bad knowing that they were exposed to second-hand smoke at the park. All parks and playgrounds should be smoke-free! Thank you, Niki High School Senior at Tioga Center School

Host Families Sought for Exchange Students

International Student Exchange (ISE) is seeking host families in the New York/Pennsylvania region for high school students from other countries. Students will attend high schools within the host family’s school district for a semester or a full school year. Students come from Germany, France, Spain, Mexico, China, Thailand and Vietnam and are eager to find host families in this area. They are 15 to 18 years old, bring spending money, speak English, and have full insurance. Host families provide a loving and caring home for the student, provide a bed and place to study, provide three meals a day, treat the student as a family mem-ber. Families don't necessarily need to have teenagers living in the home to be-

come a host family; they may have young children, adult children or no chil-dren at all. Homeschooling families can benefit from the program as a cultural learning experience for their own children even though exchange students must attend local high schools. For more information, contact ISE Representative Jill Darling by June 25 (applications must be completed and background checks made prior to stu-dents’ arrival) at 607-239-1029 or 570-395-3215. New York and Pennsylvania are in the Evergreen Region of ISE at evergreen.iseusa.org.

“American Pickers” to Film in New York

Mike Wolfe, Frank Fritz, and their

team plan to film episodes of the hit se-

ries “American Pickers” in New York

with filming scheduled for summer

2016.

“American Pickers” is a documentary

series that explores the fascinating world

of antique ‘picking’ on the History

Channel. The show follows Mike Wolfe

and Frank Fritz, two of the most skilled

pickers in the business, as they hunt for

America’s most valuable antiques - from

motorcycles, classic cars and bicycles, to

one-of-a-kind vintage memorabilia.

As they hit the back roads from coast

to coast, Mike and Frank continue their

mission to recycle America by rescuing

forgotten relics and giving them a new

lease on life, while learning a thing or

two about American history along the

way.

“American Pickers” is looking for

leads and would love to explore your

buried treasure. They are on the hunt for

characters with interesting and unique

items. Some of what they look for: vin-

tage bicycles, toys, unusual radios, mov-

ie memorabilia, advertising, military

items, folk art, early firefighting equip-

ment, vintage musical equipment, auto-

motive items, and clothing. They are

always excited to find things they’ve

never seen before and learn the story

behind it.

If you or someone you know has a

large, private collection send your:

name, phone number, location and de-

scription of the collection with photos

to: [email protected] or

call 855-old-rust.
