Borgess Foundation Seeks Donationsto Help Borgess Tree(s) of Love Shine

KALAMAZOO, Mich., October 13, 2011—When detected early,breast cancer is often more easily treated and women livelonger. The Borgess Foundation urges the community to sup-port its annual Tree of Love campaign to help women in needreceive lifesaving mammograms.

In 1985, the Borgess Service League launched the first BorgessTree of Love to raise money for early detection and treatment ofbreast cancer, a disease that claims the life of one Americanwoman every 69 seconds. It is estimated that one out of everyfive women does not have insurance to cover breast cancerdetection services, such as mammography.

Community donations to the Tree of Love campaign fund mam-mograms at Borgess for low-income women without healthinsurance. By contributing to the campaign, donors also havethe opportunity to recognize someone important in their lives.Each honoree is represented by a light on a tree and mailed anacknowledgement card.

This year, the Borgess Foundation plans to raise $45,000 tohelp area women receive vital mammography services. “After25 years of success, we were thrilled to finally plant a perma-nent ‘Tree of Love’ outside Borgess Medical Center this pastsummer,” said Kim Loftus, CFRE, development officer, Borgess Foundation. “Through the generosity of our community,we hope to see this new tree, along with our other area fundraising trees, shine with thousands of pink lights.”

Every $8 donation helps a woman receive a mammogram at Borgess Medical Center, as well as allows donors to honoror remember someone special. Every $80 donation sponsors a mammogram for a woman and allows donors to honor orremember up to 10 people. Secure, tax-deductible donations may be made online at treeoflove.borgess.com. Those whowish to contribute by mail may contact the Borgess Foundation at (269) 226.8100 for a donor form.

The lighting of the 18-foot Norwegian Spruce at Borgess Medical Center will take place on Tuesday, December 6, 6 p.m.Separate lighting events will also take place on Wednesday, December 7, 5:30 p.m. at Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital inDowagiac, and Thursday, December 8, 6 p.m. at Borgess-Pipp Hospital in Plainwell.

“Faith’s Hall of Fame”“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for

Two acquaintances of mine were recentlyinducted into Plainwell High School’s 2011Athletic Hall of Fame. One is Edwin “Bill”Carpenter, a noted scholar-athlete and l958graduate of Plainwell High School. He retiredfrom Kalamazoo Durametallic Corp. as VicePresident of Worldwide Marketing and Sales.The other is Irv Figel, a l963 standout athleteand graduate of Otsego High School. He was aPlainwell teacher and PHS track, cross-countryand basketball coach for 26 years.

Irv told me about a young man who thankedhim for being his coach and for giving him theopportunity to make something of his life. Irvreturned home that day and said to his wife,Elaine, “Now I know why I am doing this.”

The eleventh chapter of Hebrews (NewTestament) has been aptly called “Faith’s Hall ofFame.” In that chapter are listed many Bibleheroes such as Abraham, Moses and David.The mention of each inductee is preceded by

the words “By faith” (Hebrews 11:39).I have good news for you. Neither success

nor status will get you into God’s Hall of Fame.It is all by grace. “Therefore, since we havebeen justified through faith, we have peacewith God through our Lord Jesus Christ,through whom we have gained access byfaith into this grace in which we now stand.”(Romans 5: l, 2).

Heavenly rewards are not reserved for a cho-sen few. “Now there is in store for me the crownof righteousness, which the Lord the righteousJudge, will award to me on that day – and notonly to me, but also to all who have longed forhis appearing” (II Timothy 4:8). All one must dois repent and believe.

Pretty awesome, huh?Please pray with me. Lord Jesus, help me to

put my entire trust in You for personal salvationboth in this life and in the life to come. In Jesus’name. Amen.

Carolyn passed away Saturday, October 16, 2011at her home. Mrs. McNees was born September26, 1934, in Kalamazoo to Francis and Winnie(Klimp) Miller. Carolyn was a member of the FirstCongregational Church of Otsego. In her leisuretime she enjoyed baking and spending time withgrandchildren. On August 15, 1953 in Kalamazooshe married Stanley McNees, who survives. Alsosurviving are her children, Linda Jolicoeur ofBloomingdale, Douglas (Judith) McNees ofLawton and Scott (Jeannie) McNees ofBloomingdale; 11 grandchildren, Tammy, DennisJr., Joe, Michael, Nathan, Hailey, Kyle, Wyatt,Scott, Kaitilyn and Emma; 5 great-grandchildren,Brooke, Jessie, Angel, Hannah and Joy; hersisters, Sharron (F.D.) Dooley, Margaret (Fred)Wilson and Charlene (John) Essman; severalnieces and nephews. She was preceded in deathby her parents and her sons, Steven and Michael.A Memorial Service was held Thursday at theFirst Congregational Church of Otsego withPastor David Youngs officiating. Cremation hastaken place. Burial of ashes at EvergreenCemetery, Bloomingdale at a later date.
